Esdras 3

1 Y llegado el mes séptimo, y ya los hijos de Israel en las ciudades, se juntó el pueblo como un varón en Jerusalén

2 Entonces se levantó Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y sus hermanos los sacerdotes, y Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y sus hermanos, y edificaron el altar del Dios de Israel, para ofrecer sobre él holocaustos como está escrito en la ley de Moisés varón de Dios

3 Y asentaron el altar sobre sus basas, porque tenían miedo de los pueblos de las tierras, y ofrecieron sobre él holocaustos al SEÑOR, holocaustos a la mañana y a la tarde

4 Hicieron asimismo la fiesta de los tabernáculos, como está escrito, y holocaustos cada día por cuenta, conforme a la ordenanza, cada cosa en su día

5 y a más de esto, el holocausto continuo, y las nuevas lunas, y todas las fiestas santificadas del SEÑOR, y toda ofrenda espontánea, voluntaria al SEÑOR

6 Desde el primer día del mes séptimo comenzaron a ofrecer holocaustos al SEÑOR; mas el templo del SEÑOR no estaba aún fundado

7 Y dieron dinero a los carpinteros y oficiales; asimismo comida y bebida, y aceite a los sidonios y tirios, para que trajeran madera de cedro del Líbano al mar de Jope, conforme a la voluntad de Ciro rey de Persia sobre ellos

8 Y en el año segundo de su venida a la Casa de Dios en Jerusalén, en el mes segundo, comenzaron Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel, y Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y los otros sus hermanos, los sacerdotes y los levitas, y todos los que habían venido de la cautividad a Jerusalén; y pusieron a los levitas de veinte años arriba para que tuvieran cargo de la obra de la Casa del SEÑOR

9 Y estuvo Jesúa, sus hijos y sus hermanos, Cadmiel y sus hijos, hijos de Judá, como un varón para dar prisa a los que hacían la obra en la casa de Dios: los hijos de Henadad, sus hijos y sus hermanos, levitas

10 Y los albañiles del templo del SEÑOR echaron los cimientos; y pusieron a los sacerdotes vestidos de sus ropas, con trompetas, y a los levitas hijos de Asaf con címbalos, para que alabaran al SEÑOR, según la ordenanza de David rey de Israel

11 Y cantaban, alabando y confesando al SEÑOR, y decían: Porque es bueno, porque para siempre es su misericordia sobre Israel. Y todo el pueblo gritaba con gran grito, alabando al SEÑOR, porque la Casa del SEÑOR era acimentada

12 Y muchos de los sacerdotes y de los levitas y de las cabezas de los padres, viejos, que habían visto la casa primera, viendo fundar esta casa, lloraban en alta voz, mientras muchos otros daban grandes gritos de alegría

13 Y el pueblo no podía discernir la voz del grito de alegría, de la voz del lloro del pueblo; porque el pueblo gritaba con gran grito, y la voz se oía hasta lejos

Chapter 3

The altar and festivals. (1-7) The foundations of the temple laid. (8-13)

Verses 1-7 From the proceedings of the Jews on their arrival, let us learn to begin with God, and to do what we can in the worship of God, when we cannot do what we would. They could not at once have a temple, but they would not be without an altar. Fear of danger should stir us to our duty. Have we many enemies? Then it is good to have God our Friend, and to keep up communion with him. Our fears should drive us to our knees. The sacrifices for all these solemnities were a heavy expense for so poor a company; yet besides those expressly appointed, many brought free-will offerings to the Lord. And they made preparation for the building of the temple without delay: whatever God calls us to do, we may depend upon his providence to furnish us with the needful means.

Verses 8-13 There was a remarkable mixture of affections upon laying the foundation of the temple. Those that only knew the misery of having no temple at all, praised the Lord with shouts of joy. To them, even this foundation seemed great. We ought to be thankful for the beginnings of mercy, though it be not yet perfect. But those who remembered the glory of the first temple, and considered how far inferior this was likely to be, wept with a loud voice. There was reason for it, and if they bewailed the sin that was the cause of this melancholy change, they did well. Yet it was wrong to cast a damp upon the common joys. They despised the day of small things, and were unthankful for the good they enjoyed. Let not the remembrance of former afflictions drown the sense of present mercies.

INTRODUCTION TO EZRA 3

This chapter relates how that the people of Israel returned from captivity, gathered to Jerusalem, and set up the altar, where sacrifices were offered, Ezr 3:1-3, and kept the feast of tabernacles, and offered the sacrifices of that, besides the daily sacrifice, and of other festivals; and contributed to the workmen that prepared for the building of the temple, Ezr 3:4-7 and began it by laying the foundation of it; which to some was matter of joy, to others of grief, on different accounts, Ezr 3:8-13.
