John 6:58

58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. The one who eats this bread will live {forever}."

John 6:58 Meaning and Commentary

John 6:58

This is that bread which came down from heaven
That true bread, the bread of God, the bread of life, living bread; meaning himself, as in ( John 6:32 John 6:33 John 6:35 John 6:48 John 6:50 John 6:51 ) ;

not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead:
this is bread of a quite different nature from that; that was only typical bread, this true; that was the bread of angels, but this is the bread of God; that came but from the air, this from the third heaven; that men ate of, and died; but whoever eats of this, lives for ever; see ( John 6:49 ) ; as follows:

he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever;
(See Gill on John 6:51).

John 6:58 In-Context

56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood resides in me and I in him.
57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, [so] also the one who eats me--that one will live because of me.
58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. The one who eats this bread will live {forever}."
59 He said these [things] [while] teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
60 Thus many of his disciples, [when they] heard [it], said, "This saying is hard! Who can understand it?"

  • [a]. *This term is somewhat graphic and typically used for animals feeding, but the distinction from other Greek verbs for eating is difficult to convey in English
  • [b]. Literally "for the age"
