Luke 22:35

The Two Swords

Luke 22:35 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 22:35

And he said unto them
To the disciples, as the Persic version reads; not to Peter only, but to them all:

when I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes;
without the necessaries of life, without proper accommodations for a journey, without provisions, or money, to buy any with: so (aneu balantiou) , "without a purse", is, by the Scholiast on Aristophanes F20, interpreted by (aneu arguriou kai dapanhv) , "without money and expense": Christ here refers to his mission of them in ( Matthew 10:5 Matthew 10:9 Matthew 10:10 )

lacked ye any thing?
any of the common blessings of life, food to eat, or raiment to wear?

and they said, nothing;
they lacked nothing at all; wherever they came, they had friendly accommodations; they were provided with every thing necessary for them; they had both food and raiment, and good lodgings in every place; the houses and hearts of men were opened by Christ to receive them, though they were sent out by him so empty and destitute.

Luke 22:35 In-Context

33 But he said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"
34 And he said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times [that you] know me!"
35 And he said to them, "When I sent you out without a money bag and a traveler's bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, [did you]?" And they said, "Nothing."
36 And he said to them, "But now the one who has a money bag must take [it], and likewise a traveler's bag. And the one who does not have a sword must sell his cloak and buy [one].
37 For I tell you that this that is written must be fulfilled in me: 'And he was counted with the criminals.' For indeed, [what is written] about me {is being fulfilled}."
