Jérémie 25:17-28

17 Et je pris la coupe de la main de l'Eternel, Et je la fis boire à toutes les nations Vers lesquelles l'Eternel m'envoyait:

18 A Jérusalem et aux villes de Juda, A ses rois et à ses chefs, Pour en faire une ruine, Un objet de désolation, de moquerie et de malédiction, Comme cela se voit aujourd'hui;

19 A Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, A ses serviteurs, à ses chefs, et à tout son peuple;

20 A toute l'Arabie, à tous les rois du pays d'Uts, A tous les rois du pays des Philistins, A Askalon, à Gaza, à Ekron, et à ce qui reste d'Asdod;

21 A Edom, A Moab, et aux enfants d'Ammon;

22 A tous les rois de Tyr, à tous les rois de Sidon, Et aux rois des îles qui sont au delà de la mer;

23 A Dedan, à Théma, à Buz, Et à tous ceux qui se rasent les coins de la barbe;

24 A tous les rois d'Arabie, Et à tous les rois des Arabes qui habitent dans le désert;

25 A tous les rois de Zimri, A tous les rois d'Elam, Et à tous les rois de Médie;

26 A tous les rois du septentrion, Proches ou éloignés, Aux uns et aux autres, Et à tous les royaumes du monde Qui sont sur la face de la terre. Et le roi de Schéschac boira après eux.

27 Tu leur diras: Ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Buvez, enivrez-vous, et vomissez, Et tombez sans vous relever, A la vue du glaive que j'enverrai au milieu de vous!

28 Et s'ils refusent de prendre de ta main la coupe pour boire, Dis-leur: Ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées: Vous boirez!

Jérémie 25:17-28 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 25

This chapter contains a prophecy of the destruction of Judea by the king of Babylon; and also of Babylon itself, after the Jews' captivity of seventy years; and likewise of all the nations round about. The date of this prophecy is in Jer 25:1; when the prophet puts the Jews in mind of the prophecies that had been delivered unto them by himself and others, for some years past, without effect, Jer 25:2-7; wherefore they are threatened with the king of Babylon, that he should come against them, and strip them of all their desirable things; make their land desolate, and them captives for seventy years, Jer 25:8-11; at the expiration of which he in his turn shall be punished, and the land of Chaldea laid waste, and become subject to other nations and kings, Jer 25:12-14; and by a cup of wine given to all the nations round about, is signified the utter ruin of them, and who are particularly mentioned by name, Jer 25:15-26; which is confirmed by beginning with the city of Jerusalem, and the destruction of that, Jer 25:27-29; wherefore the prophet is bid to prophesy against them, and to declare the Lord's controversy with them, and that there should be a slaughter of them from one end of the earth to the other, Jer 25:30-33; upon which the shepherds, kings, and rulers of them, are called to lamentation and howling, Jer 25:34-38.
