Psaume 135

1 Louez l'Eternel! Louez le nom de l'Eternel, Louez-le, serviteurs de l'Eternel,

2 Qui vous tenez dans la maison de l'Eternel, Dans les parvis de la maison de notre Dieu!

3 Louez l'Eternel! car l'Eternel est bon. Chantez à son nom! car il est favorable.

4 Car l'Eternel s'est choisi Jacob, Israël, pour qu'il lui appartînt.

5 Je sais que l'Eternel est grand, Et que notre Seigneur est au-dessus de tous les dieux.

6 Tout ce que l'Eternel veut, il le fait, Dans les cieux et sur la terre, Dans les mers et dans tous les abîmes.

7 Il fait monter les nuages des extrémités de la terre, Il produit les éclairs et la pluie, Il tire le vent de ses trésors.

8 Il frappa les premiers-nés de l'Egypte, Depuis les hommes jusqu'aux animaux.

9 Il envoya des signes et des miracles au milieu de toi, Egypte! Contre Pharaon et contre tous ses serviteurs.

10 Il frappa des nations nombreuses, Et tua des rois puissants,

11 Sihon, roi des Amoréens, Og, roi de Basan, Et tous les rois de Canaan;

12 Et il donna leur pays en héritage, En héritage à Israël, son peuple.

13 Eternel! ton nom subsiste à toujours, Eternel! ta mémoire dure de génération en génération.

14 Car l'Eternel jugera son peuple, Et il aura pitié de ses serviteurs.

15 Les idoles des nations sont de l'argent et de l'or, Elles sont l'ouvrage de la main des hommes.

16 Elles ont une bouche et ne parlent point, Elles ont des yeux et ne voient point,

17 Elles ont des oreilles et n'entendent point, Elles n'ont point de souffle dans leur bouche.

18 Ils leur ressemblent, ceux qui les fabriquent, Tous ceux qui se confient en elles.

19 Maison d'Israël, bénissez l'Eternel! Maison d'Aaron, bénissez l'Eternel!

20 Maison de Lévi, bénissez l'Eternel! Vous qui craignez l'Eternel, bénissez l'Eternel!

21 Que de Sion l'on bénisse l'Eternel, Qui habite à Jérusalem! Louez l'Eternel!

Psaume 135 Commentary

Chapter 135

God to be praised for his mercy. (1-4) For his power and judgments. (5-14) The vanity of idols. (15-21)

Verses 1-4 The subject-matter of praise, is the blessings of grace flowing from the everlasting love of God. The name of God as a covenant God and Father in Christ, blessing us with all spiritual blessings in him, is to be loved and praised. The Lord chose a people to himself, that they might be unto him for a name and a praise. If they do not praise him for this distinguishing favour, they are the most unworthy and ungrateful of all people.

Verses 5-14 God is, and will be always, the same to his church, a gracious, faithful, wonder-working God. And his church is, and will be, the same to him, a thankful, praising people: thus his name endures for ever. He will return in ways of mercy to them, and will delight to do them good.

Verses 15-21 These verses arm believers against idolatry and all false worship, by showing what sort of gods the heathen worshipped. And the more deplorable the condition of the Gentile nations that worship idols, the more are we to be thankful that we know better. Let us pity, and pray for, and seek to benefit benighted heathens and deluded sinners. Let us endeavour to glorify his name, and recommend his truth, not only with our lips, but by holy lives, copying the example of Christ's goodness and truth.

INTRODUCTION TO PSALM 135

This psalm was written very probably by the same hand as the former. It begins in much the same manner; it has some likeness with Psalm 113 and 114. It begins and ends with "hallelujah"; and is throughout an exhortation of praise to God, on account of his name, nature, and perfections; and because of his works of creation, providence, and grace, many of which are enumerated. The Syriac interpreter says, there is an intimation in it of the conversion of the people of the Messiah unto the faith.
