1 Chronicles 9:21 Meaning and Commentary

1 Chronicles 9:21

And Zechariah the son of Meshelemiah
Some think this refers to one that was in the times of David; but it seems rather to respect one that was after the Babylonish captivity, see ( 1 Chronicles 26:1 1 Chronicles 26:2 ) though he and his brethren were in an office established in the times of David, and the order of which was now, as then, observed:

was porter of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:
who was the chief porter, and kept the door; either that led into the outer court, and kept out all unclean persons from entering there; or that which led into the court of the priests, that none but priests might enter there.

1 Chronicles 9:21 In-Context

19 Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of Korah, along with his brothers in the Korahite family, were in charge of the services of worship as doorkeepers of the Tent, as their ancestors had guarded the entrance to the camp of God.
20 In the early days, Phinehas son of Eleazar was in charge of the security guards - God be with him!
21 Now Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the security guard at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
22 The number of those who had been chosen to be security guards was 212 - they were officially registered in their own camps. David and Samuel the seer handpicked them for their dependability.
23 They and their sons had the permanent responsibility for guarding the gates of God's house, the house of worship;
