Colossians 3:19 Meaning and Commentary

Colossians 5:19

Husbands, love your wives (See Gill on Ephesians 5:25).

and be not bitter against them;
turning love into hatred of their persons; ruling with rigour, and in a tyrannical manner; behaving towards them in a morose, churlish, and ill natured way; giving them either bitter words, or blows, and denying them their affection, care, provision, protection, and assistance, but using them as servants, or worse. All which is barbarous, brutish, and unchristian, and utterly unbecoming the Gospel.

Slaying the Family Dragons, Part 2A
Pastor Mike Fabarez

Defeating the Fire-Breathing MarriageIn the beginning he was Prince Charming.  She was the beautiful princess.  And the wedding was a fairy-tale celebration of a great love story.  But many couples soon discover that marriage doesn’t always guarantee a “happily ever after.”  Unprotected, our relationships are vulnerable to destructive forces.  We’re in a timely mini-series in Colossians called "Slaying the Family Dragons".  On this edition of Focal Point, Mike Fabarez equips husbands to defend their marriages and fan the flame of biblical love.

Colossians 3:19 In-Context

17 Let every detail in your lives - words, actions, whatever - be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.
18 Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master.
19 Husbands, go all out in love for your wives. Don't take advantage of them.
20 Children, do what your parents tell you. This delights the Master no end.
21 Parents, don't come down too hard on your children or you'll crush their spirits.
