Genesis 1:15

And let them be for lights in the firmament of the
heaven
To continue there as luminous bodies; as enlighteners, as the word signifies, causing light, or as being the instruments of conveying it, particularly to the earth, as follows: to give light upon the earth;
and the inhabitants of it, when formed: and it was so:
these lights were formed and placed in the firmament of the heaven for such uses, and served such purposes as God willed and ordered they should.

Genesis 1:15 In-Context

13 It was evening, it was morning - Day Three.
14 God spoke: "Lights! Come out! Shine in Heaven's sky! Separate Day from Night. Mark seasons and days and years,
15 Lights in Heaven's sky to give light to Earth." And there it was.
16 God made two big lights, the larger to take charge of Day, The smaller to be in charge of Night; and he made the stars.
17 God placed them in the heavenly sky to light up Earth
