1 Now 1Sarai, Abram'swife had borne him no children, and she had 2an Egyptianmaid whose name was Hagar.

So Saraisaid to Abram, "Nowbehold, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. 3Pleasego in to my maid; perhaps I will obtainchildrenthrough her." And Abramlistened to the voice of Sarai.

AfterAbram had lived4tenyears in the land of Canaan, Abram'swifeSaraitookHagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to her husbandAbram as his wife.

He went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight.

And Saraisaid to Abram, "5May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms, but when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her sight. 6May the LORDjudgebetween you and me."

But Abramsaid to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Saraitreated her harshly, and 7she fled from her presence.

Now 8the angel of the LORDfound her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to 9Shur.

He said, "Hagar, Sarai'smaid, 10where* have you come from and where are you going?" And she said, "I am fleeing from the presence of my mistressSarai."

Then the angel of the LORDsaid to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself to her authority."

Moreover, the 11angel of the LORDsaid to her, "12I will greatlymultiply your descendants so that they will be toomany to count."

The angel of the LORDsaid to her further, "Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his nameIshmael, Because13the LORD has givenheed to your affliction.

"He will be a 14wilddonkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone'shand will be against him; And he will live15to the east of all his brothers."

Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a Godwhosees "; for she said, "16Have I evenremainedalivehereafterseeing Him?"

Therefore* the well was calledBeer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between17Kadesh and Bered.

So HagarboreAbram a son; and Abramcalled the name of his son, whomHagarbore, Ishmael.

Abram was 18eighty-sixyearsold when HagarboreIshmael to him.
