Psalms 44:25

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.

Psalms 44:25 Meaning and Commentary

Psalms 44:25

For our soul is bowed down to the dust
Which may signify great declension in spiritual things, much dejection of mind, and little exercise of grace, ( Psalms 119:25 ) ( Lamentations 3:29 ) ; or a very low estate in temporals; subjection to their enemies; they setting their feet upon their necks, and obliging them to lick the dust of them: and even it may signify nearness to death itself; see ( Joshua 10:24 ) ( Isaiah 49:23 ) ( Psalms 22:16 ) ;

our belly cleaveth to the earth;
as persons that lie prostrate, being conquered and suppliants.

Psalms 44:25 In-Context

23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord? Arise! Do not cast us off forever.
24 Why do You hide Your face, And forget our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust; Our body clings to the ground.
26 Arise for our help, And redeem us for Your mercies' sake.
