Genesis 46:23

23 The children of Dan: Hashum.

Genesis 46:23 Meaning and Commentary

Genesis 46:23

And the sons of Dan, Hushim.
] He had but one son, wherefore the plural is put for the singular, see ( Genesis 46:7 Genesis 46:15 ) ; Aben Ezra thinks he had two sons, and that one of them was dead, and therefore not mentioned; but the other way best accounts for the expression; though, as Schmidt observes, the plural may be indefinitely put, and the sense be this, as for the sons of Dan, there was only one, whose name was Hushim. Dan was a son of Jacob by Bilhah, Rachel's maid, as the following was another.

Genesis 46:23 In-Context

21 The children of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard
22 (these are the children of Rachel, who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all).
23 The children of Dan: Hashum.
24 The children of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem
25 (these are the children of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel, and these she bore to Jacob—seven persons in all).
