1 Corinthians 14:17

For thou verily givest thanks well
In very proper words, and pertinent expressions, with great affection and devotion, suitable to the service;

but the other is not edified;
the rest of the people, who do not understand the language in which thanks are given; "thy friend", as the Syriac version reads it; or thy next neighbour, he that stands by thee, receives no manner of profit by it, because he does not understand what is said.

15 ¿Qué debo hacer entonces? Oraré en el espíritu
y también oraré con palabras que entiendo. Cantaré en el espíritu y también cantaré con palabras que entiendo.

16 Pues, si alabas a Dios sólo en el espíritu, ¿cómo podrán los que no te entienden alabar a Dios contigo? ¿Cómo podrán unirse a tus agradecimientos cuando no entienden lo que dices?

18 Yo le agradezco a Dios que hablo en lenguas más que cualquiera de ustedes;

19 pero en una reunión de la iglesia, para ayudar a otros preferiría hablar cinco palabras comprensibles que diez mil palabras en un idioma desconocido.
