2 Samuel 24:12

Go, and say unto David
Not my servant David, as Nathan was bid to say to him when it was in his heart to build an house for him, ( 2 Samuel 7:5 ) ; but now he had sinned and displeased the Lord, and therefore it is only plain David:

thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three [things];
or lay them before thee to consider of which thou wouldest have done; the Targum is,

``one of three things I cast upon thee,''

as a burden to bear; one of the three I will certainly inflict upon thee by way of chastisement:

choose thee one of them, that I may [do it] unto thee;
here is mercy mixed with judgment; the Lord is angry, yet shows great condescension and goodness; a sovereign Being, who could have imposed what punishment he pleased, and even all the three after mentioned, yet resolves but on one, and leaves that to the option of David.

Pero después de haber levantado el censo, a David le comenzó a remorder la conciencia, y le dijo al Señor
: «He pecado grandemente al haber cometido el censo. Señor
, te ruego que perdones mi culpa por haber cometido esta tontería».

11 A la mañana siguiente, la palabra del Señor
vino al profeta Gad, quien era el vidente de David, y le dio este mensaje:

12 «Ve y dile a David: “Esto dice el Señor
: te doy tres opciones; escoge uno de estos castigos, y yo te lo impondré”».

13 De modo que Gad fue a ver a David y le preguntó:
—¿Vas a elegir tres
años de hambre en toda la tierra, o tres meses de huir de tus enemigos, o tres días de una terrible plaga por todo el país? Piénsalo bien y decide qué respuesta debo darle al Señor
, quien me envió.

14 —¡Estoy en una situación desesperada! —le respondió David a Gad—. Mejor que caigamos nosotros en las manos del Señor
, porque su misericordia es grande, y que no caiga yo en manos humanas.
