Deuteronomio 23

1 Ordenanzas sobre la adoración
»No se admitirá en la asamblea del Señor
a ningún hombre que tenga los testículos aplastados o el pene mutilado.

2 »No se admitirá en la asamblea del Señor
a ningún hijo ilegítimo ni a sus descendientes hasta la décima generación.

3 »No se admitirá en la asamblea del Señor
a ningún amonita ni moabita ni tampoco a sus descendientes hasta la décima generación.

4 Esas naciones no te recibieron con alimento ni agua cuando saliste de Egipto. En cambio, contrataron a Balaam, hijo de Beor, proveniente del lejano Petor, en Aram-naharaim, para que te maldijera.

5 Pero el Señor
tu Dios se negó a escuchar a Balaam y convirtió esa maldición en bendición, porque el Señor
tu Dios te ama.

6 Jamás en tu vida buscarás el bienestar ni la prosperidad de los amonitas ni de los moabitas.

7 »No detestes a los edomitas ni a los egipcios, porque los edomitas son tus parientes y porque viviste como extranjero entre los egipcios.

8 Podrá entrar en la asamblea del Señor
la tercera generación de los edomitas y de los egipcios.

9 Ordenanzas varias
»Cuando salgas a la guerra contra tus enemigos, asegúrate de mantenerte lejos de toda impureza.

10 »Cualquier hombre que quede ceremonialmente impuro debido a una emisión nocturna deberá alejarse del campamento y quedarse allí el resto del día.

11 Hacia el atardecer, tendrá que bañarse y podrá volver al campamento al ponerse el sol.

12 »Deberás designar una zona fuera del campamento donde puedas ir a hacer tus necesidades.

13 Cada persona tendrá una pala
entre sus herramientas. Cuando vayas a hacer tus necesidades, cava un hoyo con la pala y luego cubre el excremento.

14 El campamento debe ser santo, porque el Señor
tu Dios se mueve dentro de él para protegerte y derrotar a tus enemigos. Ten cuidado de que él no vea nada vergonzoso en medio de ti, o se alejará de tu lado.

15 »Si un esclavo huye de su amo y se refugia contigo, no lo devuelvas a su amo.

16 Déjalo vivir en medio de ti en cualquier ciudad que elija y no lo oprimas.

17 »Ningún israelita, sea hombre o mujer, se dedicará a la prostitución ritual del templo.

18 Para cumplir con un juramento, no lleves a la casa del Señor
tu Dios ninguna ofrenda que provenga de la ganancia de un hombre
o de una mujer que se haya prostituido, pues ambos son detestables al Señor
tu Dios.

19 »No cobres intereses por los préstamos que le hagas a otro israelita, sea que le prestes dinero, alimento o cualquier otra cosa.

20 Puedes cobrar intereses a los extranjeros, pero no les cobrarás a los israelitas, para que el Señor
tu Dios te bendiga en todo lo que hagas en la tierra donde estás a punto de entrar y que vas a poseer.

21 »Cuando hagas un voto al Señor
tu Dios, no tardes en cumplir lo que le prometiste. Pues el Señor
tu Dios te exige que cumplas todos tus votos sin demora, o serás culpable de pecado.

22 Sin embargo, no es pecado abstenerse de hacer un voto.

23 Pero una vez que voluntariamente hagas un voto, asegúrate de cumplir lo que prometiste al Señor
tu Dios.

24 »Cuando entres en el viñedo de un vecino, podrás comer todas las uvas que quieras, pero no te llevarás nada en una canasta.

25 También, cuando entres en el campo de un vecino, podrás arrancar los granos de trigo con la mano, pero no cortarás las espigas con la hoz.

Deuteronomio 23 Commentary

Chapter 23

Who are shut out from the congregation. (1-8) Cleanliness enjoined. (15-25) Of fugitive servants, Usury, and other precepts. (9-14)

Verses 1-8 We ought to value the privileges of God's people, both for ourselves and for our children, above all other advantages. No personal blemishes, no crimes of our forefathers, no difference of nation, shuts us out under the Christian dispensation. But an unsound heart will deprive us of blessings; and a bad example, or an unsuitable marriage, may shut our children from them.

Verses 9-14 The camp of the Lord must have nothing offensive in it. If there must be this care taken to preserve the body clean, much more should we be careful to keep the mind pure.

Verses 15-25 It is honourable to shelter and protect the weak, provided they are not wicked. Proselytes and converts to the truth, should be treated with particular tenderness, that they may have no temptation to return to the world. We cannot honour God with our substance, unless it be honestly and honourably come by. It must not only be considered what we give, but how we got it. Where the borrower gets, or hopes to get, it is just that the lender should share the gain; but to him that borrows for necessary food, pity must be showed. That which is gone out of thy lips, as a solemn and deliberate vow, must not be recalled, but thou shalt keep and perform it punctually and fully. They were allowed to pluck and eat of the corn or grapes that grew by the road side; only they must not carry any away. This law intimated what great plenty of corn and wine they should have in Canaan. It provided for the support of poor travellers, and teaches us to be kind to such, teaches us to be ready to distribute, and not to think every thing lost that is given away. Yet it forbids us to abuse the kindness of friends, or to take advantage of what is allowed. Faithfulness to their engagements should mark the people of God; and they should never encroach upon others.

Orders are here given to restrain certain persons from entering into the congregation of the Lord, De 23:1-8, and to take care that there be no unclean person in the camp, or any indecent thing done in it, De 23:9-14, to protect fugitive servants, and not deliver them up to their masters, De 23:15,16 not to suffer a filthy person to be among them, or any filthy thing to be brought into the house of God for a vow, De 23:17,18, then follow some laws against usury, and for the payment of vows, De 23:19-23, and the chapter is concluded with some directions how to behave in a neighbour's vineyard, or standing corn, De 23:24,25.
