Esdras 3

1 Reconstrucción del altar
A comienzos del otoño,
cuando los israelitas ya se habían establecido en sus ciudades, todo el pueblo se reunió en Jerusalén con un mismo propósito.

2 Entonces Jesúa, hijo de Jehosadac,
se unió a sus hermanos sacerdotes y a Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, con su familia, para reconstruir el altar del Dios de Israel. Querían sacrificar ofrendas quemadas sobre el altar, según las instrucciones de la ley de Moisés, hombre de Dios.

3 A pesar de que tenían miedo de los lugareños, reconstruyeron el altar en su sitio original. Luego, cada mañana y cada tarde, comenzaron a sacrificar ofrendas quemadas al Señor
sobre el altar.

4 Celebraron el Festival de las Enramadas como está establecido en la ley y sacrificaron la cantidad específica de ofrendas quemadas para cada día del festival.

5 También ofrecieron las ofrendas quemadas habituales y las ofrendas requeridas para las celebraciones de luna nueva y los festivales anuales, tal como lo había establecido el Señor
. La gente también entregó ofrendas voluntarias al Señor
.

6 Quince días antes de que comenzara el Festival de las Enramadas,
los sacerdotes empezaron a sacrificar ofrendas quemadas al Señor
. Esto ocurrió aun antes de que comenzaran a echar los cimientos del templo del Señor
.

7 El pueblo comienza a reconstruir el templo
Luego el pueblo contrató albañiles y carpinteros, y compró troncos de cedro de los habitantes de Tiro y Sidón, a quienes les pagaron con alimentos, vino y aceite de oliva. Transportaron troncos desde las montañas del Líbano hasta Jope haciéndolos flotar a lo largo de la costa del mar Mediterráneo,
ya que el rey Ciro había dado permiso para hacerlo.

8 La construcción del templo de Dios comenzó a mediados de la primavera,
en el segundo año después de la llegada a Jerusalén. La fuerza laboral estaba formada por todos los que habían regresado del destierro, entre ellos Zorobabel, hijo de Salatiel, Jesúa, hijo de Josadac, junto con sus hermanos sacerdotes y todos los levitas. Pusieron al frente de la reconstrucción del templo del Señor
a los levitas mayores de veinte años de edad.

9 Jesúa, sus hijos y parientes, junto con Cadmiel y sus hijos, todos descendientes de Hodavías,
supervisaron a los que trabajaban en el templo de Dios. Para esta tarea contaron con la colaboración de los levitas de la familia de Henadad.

10 Cuando los constructores terminaron los cimientos del templo del Señor
, los sacerdotes se pusieron sus mantos y tomaron su lugar para tocar sus trompetas. Luego los levitas descendientes de Asaf hicieron sonar sus címbalos para alabar al Señor
, tal como lo había establecido el rey David.

11 Con alabanza y agradecimiento entonaron el siguiente canto al Señor
:
«¡Él es tan bueno!
¡Su fiel amor por Israel permanece para siempre!».
Luego todo el pueblo dio un fuerte grito, alabando al Señor
, porque se habían echado los cimientos del templo del Señor
.

12 Sin embargo, muchos de los sacerdotes, levitas y otros líderes de edad avanzada que habían visto el primer templo lloraron en voz alta al ver los cimientos del nuevo templo. Los demás, en cambio, gritaban de alegría.

13 Los gritos de alegría se mezclaron con el llanto y produjeron un clamor que podía oírse a gran distancia.

Chapter 3

The altar and festivals. (1-7) The foundations of the temple laid. (8-13)

Verses 1-7 From the proceedings of the Jews on their arrival, let us learn to begin with God, and to do what we can in the worship of God, when we cannot do what we would. They could not at once have a temple, but they would not be without an altar. Fear of danger should stir us to our duty. Have we many enemies? Then it is good to have God our Friend, and to keep up communion with him. Our fears should drive us to our knees. The sacrifices for all these solemnities were a heavy expense for so poor a company; yet besides those expressly appointed, many brought free-will offerings to the Lord. And they made preparation for the building of the temple without delay: whatever God calls us to do, we may depend upon his providence to furnish us with the needful means.

Verses 8-13 There was a remarkable mixture of affections upon laying the foundation of the temple. Those that only knew the misery of having no temple at all, praised the Lord with shouts of joy. To them, even this foundation seemed great. We ought to be thankful for the beginnings of mercy, though it be not yet perfect. But those who remembered the glory of the first temple, and considered how far inferior this was likely to be, wept with a loud voice. There was reason for it, and if they bewailed the sin that was the cause of this melancholy change, they did well. Yet it was wrong to cast a damp upon the common joys. They despised the day of small things, and were unthankful for the good they enjoyed. Let not the remembrance of former afflictions drown the sense of present mercies.

This chapter relates how that the people of Israel returned from captivity, gathered to Jerusalem, and set up the altar, where sacrifices were offered, Ezr 3:1-3, and kept the feast of tabernacles, and offered the sacrifices of that, besides the daily sacrifice, and of other festivals; and contributed to the workmen that prepared for the building of the temple, Ezr 3:4-7 and began it by laying the foundation of it; which to some was matter of joy, to others of grief, on different accounts, Ezr 3:8-13.
