Joshua 9:19

But all the princes said to all the congregation
That is, all the princes that went to Gibeon addressed all the Israelites that were there:

we have sworn unto them by the Lord God of Israel;
by the Word of the Lord God, as the Targum; an oath is a solemn sacred thing, and not to be broken, and a good man will make conscience of it, and keep it, though he has sworn to his own hurt: and

now therefore we may not touch them;
neither take away their lives nor their substance.

17 Enseguida salieron a investigar y, en tres días, llegaron a sus ciudades, las cuales se llamaban Gabaón, Cafira, Beerot y Quiriat-jearim.

18 Sin embargo, como los líderes israelitas habían hecho un voto en el nombre del Señor
, Dios de Israel, no atacaron a ninguna de las ciudades gabaonitas.
Entonces el pueblo de Israel se quejó contra sus líderes por causa del tratado.

19 Pero los líderes respondieron: «Dado que hicimos un juramento en presencia del Señor
, Dios de Israel, no podemos tocarlos.

20 Lo que tenemos que hacer es dejarlos con vida, porque el enojo divino caería sobre nosotros si no cumpliéramos nuestro juramento.

21 Déjenlos vivir». Así que los hicieron cortar leña y llevar agua para toda la comunidad, tal como lo indicaron los líderes israelitas.
