Los filisteos devuelven el arca a Israel

1 El arca del SEÑOR estuvo en territorio filisteo siete meses,

2 y los filisteos convocaron a los sacerdotes y a los adivinos para preguntarles:—¿Qué vamos a hacer con el arca del SEÑOR? Dígannos de qué modo hay que devolverla a su lugar.

3 —Si piensan devolverla —contestaron—, no la manden sin nada; tienen que presentarle a Dios una ofrenda compensatoria. Entonces recobrarán la salud y sabrán por qué Dios no ha dejado de castigarlos.

4 —¿Y qué le debemos ofrecer? —preguntaron los filisteos.—Cinco figuras de oro en forma de tumor —respondieron aquellos— y otras cinco en forma de rata, conforme al número de jefes filisteos, pues la misma plaga los ha azotado a ustedes y a sus jefes.

5 Así que hagan imágenes de los tumores y de las ratas que han devastado el país, y den honra al Dios de Israel. Tal vez suavice su castigo contra ustedes, sus dioses y su tierra.

6 ¿Por qué se van a obstinar, como lo hicieron los egipcios bajo el faraón? ¿No es cierto que Dios tuvo que hacerles daño para que dejaran ir a los israelitas?

7 »Ahora manden a construir una carreta nueva. Escojan también dos vacas con cría y que nunca hayan llevado yugo. Aten las vacas a la carreta, pero encierren los becerros en el establo.

8 Tomen luego el arca del SEÑOR y pónganla en la carreta. Coloquen una caja junto al arca, con los objetos de oro que van a entregarle a Dios como ofrenda compensatoria. Luego dejen que la carreta se vaya sola,

9 y obsérvenla. Si se va en dirección de Bet Semes, su propio territorio, eso quiere decir que el SEÑOR es quien nos ha causado esta calamidad tan terrible. Pero si la carreta se desvía para otro lugar, sabremos que no fue él quien nos hizo daño, sino que todo ha sido por casualidad.

10 Así lo hicieron. Tomaron dos vacas con cría y las ataron a la carreta, pero encerraron los becerros en el establo.

11 Además, en la carreta pusieron el arca del SEÑOR y la caja que contenía las figuras de ratas y de tumores de oro.

12 ¡Y las vacas se fueron mugiendo por todo el camino, directamente a Bet Semes! Siguieron esa ruta sin desviarse para ningún lado. Los jefes de los filisteos se fueron detrás de la carreta, hasta llegar al territorio de Bet Semes.

13 Los habitantes de Bet Semes, que estaban en el valle cosechando el trigo, alzaron la vista y, al ver el arca, se llenaron de alegría.

14 La carreta llegó hasta el campo de Josué de Bet Semes, donde había una gran piedra, y allí se detuvo. Entonces la gente del pueblo usó la madera de la carreta como leña, y ofreció las vacas en holocausto al SEÑOR.

15 Los levitas que habían descargado la carreta pusieron el arca del SEÑOR sobre la gran piedra, junto con la caja que contenía las figuras de oro. Aquel día los habitantes de Bet Semes ofrecieron holocaustos y sacrificios al SEÑOR.

16 Los cinco jefes filisteos vieron todo esto, y regresaron a Ecrón ese mismo día.

17 Las figuras de oro en forma de tumor, que los filisteos entregaron al SEÑOR como ofrenda compensatoria, correspondían a cada una de estas ciudades: Asdod, Gaza, Ascalón, Gat y Ecrón.

18 Así mismo, el número de las ratas de oro correspondía al de las ciudades filisteas que pertenecían a los cinco jefes, tanto las ciudades fortificadas como las aldeas sin murallas. Y la gran piedra donde depositaron el arca del SEÑOR permanece hasta el día de hoy, como testimonio, en el campo de Josué de Bet Semes.

19 Algunos hombres de ese lugar se atrevieron a mirar dentro del arca del SEÑOR, y Dios los mató. Fueron setenta^[a] los que perecieron. El pueblo hizo duelo por el terrible castigo que el SEÑOR había enviado,

20 y los habitantes de Bet Semes dijeron: «El SEÑOR es un Dios santo. ¿Quién podrá presentarse ante él? ¿Y a dónde podremos enviar el arca para que no se quede entre nosotros?»

21 Así que mandaron este mensaje a los habitantes de Quiriat Yearín: «Los filisteos han devuelto el arca del SEÑOR; vengan y llévensela».

Chapter 6

The Philistines consult how to send back the ark. (1-9) They bring it to Bethshemesh. (10-18) The people smitten for looking into the ark. (19-21)

Verses 1-9 Seven months the Philistines were punished with the presence of the ark; so long it was a plague to them, because they would not send it home sooner. Sinners lengthen out their own miseries by refusing to part with their sins. The Israelites made no effort to recover the ark. Alas! where shall we find concern for religion prevail above all other matters? In times of public calamity we fear for ourselves, for our families, and for our country; but who cares for the ark of God? We are favoured with the gospel, but it is treated with neglect or contempt. We need not wonder if it should be taken from us; to many persons this, though the heavies of calamities, would occasion no grief. There are multitudes whom any profession would please as well as that of Christianity. But there are those who value the house, the word, and the ministry of God above their richest possessions, who dread the loss of these blessings more than death. How willing bad men are to shift off their convictions, and when they are in trouble, to believe it is a chance that happens; and that the rod has no voice which they should hear or heed!

Verses 10-18 These two kine knew their owner, their great Owner, whom Hophin and Phinehas knew not. God's providence takes notice even of brute creatures, and serves its own purposes by them. When the reapers saw the ark, they rejoiced; their joy for that was greater than the joy of harvest. The return of the ark, and the revival of holy ordinances, after days of restraint and trouble, are matters of great joy.

Verses 19-21 It is a great affront to God, for vain men to pry into, and meddle with the secret things which belong not to them, De. 29:29 ; Col. 2:18 . Man was ruined by desiring forbidden knowledge. God will not suffer his ark to be profaned. Be not deceived, God is not mocked. Those that will not fear his goodness, and reverently use the tokens of his grace, shall be made to feel his justice. The number smitten is expressed in an unusual manner in the original, and it is probable that it means 1170. They desire to be rid of the ark. Foolish men run from one extreme to the other. They should rather have asked, How may we have peace with God, and recover his favor? ( micah 6:6 micah 6:7 ) . Thus, when the word of God works with terror on sinners' consciences, they, instead of taking the blame and shame to themselves, quarrel with the word, and put that from them. Many stifle their convictions, and put salvation away from them.

In this chapter we are told the Philistines advised with their priests what to do with the ark, and wherewith to send it home, 1Sa 6:1,2 whose advice was to send with it a trespass offering, golden images of emerods and mice, and to put it on a new cart, and the images in a coffer on the side of the ark, and draw it with two cows, 1Sa 6:3-8, and gave them a token whereby they might know whether they had been smitten by the God of Israel or not, 1Sa 6:9 which advice they took, and acted in all things according to it; and the lords of the Philistines accompanied the ark to the border of Bethshemesh, 1Sa 6:10-12, where they of Bethshemesh received it with joy, and offered the kine for a burnt offering to the Lord, and the Levites took care of the ark and presents in it, and the lords of the Philistines returned home, 1Sa 6:13-18, but they of Bethshemesh looking into the ark were smitten of God, upon which they sent to the men of Kirjathjearim to fetch it from them, 1Sa 6:19-21.
