Joshua 8:3

So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against
Ai
As the Lord had commanded him:

and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour;
out of all the men of war; these were a select company, picked men, not the whole army, as some have thought, for he was ordered to take all the people of war, as he did:

and sent them away by night;
from the main army, that they might pass the city and get behind it undiscovered, for they were sent for an ambush; and of these some were to take the city, and be left in it to burn it, and some to smite the men of Ai, as Abarbinel notes.

Josué 8:3 In-Context

1 El SEÑOR exhortó a Josué: «¡No tengas miedo ni te acobardes! Toma contigo a todo el ejército, y ataquen la ciudad de Hai. Yo les daré la victoria sobre su rey y su ejército; se apropiarán de su ciudad y de todo el territorio que la rodea.

2 Tratarás a esta ciudad y a su rey como hiciste con Jericó y con su rey. Sin embargo, podrán quedarse con el botín de guerra y todo el ganado. Prepara una emboscada en la parte posterior de la ciudad».

4 con estas órdenes: «Ustedes pondrán una emboscada en la parte posterior de la ciudad. No se alejen mucho de ella, y manténganse en sus posiciones.

5 Yo me acercaré con mi tropa, y cuando los enemigos salgan a pelear contra nosotros, huiremos como la primera vez.
