Ezra 4:13

Be it known now unto the king
And let it be seriously and thoroughly considered by him and his counsellors:

that if this city be builded, and its walls set up again, then will
they not pay toll, tribute, and custom;
being able to defend themselves against the king's forces, sent to reduce them to their obedience; these three words take in all sorts of taxes and levies on persons, goods, and merchandise:

and so thou shall endamage the revenue of the kings;
not only his own, but his successors';

this they thought would be a very striking and powerful argument with
him.

11 (Esta é uma cópia da carta que lhe enviaram.)“Ao rei Artaxerxes,De seus servos que vivem a oeste do Eufrates:

12 “Informamos o rei que os judeus que chegaram a nós da tua parte vieram a Jerusalém e estão reconstruindo aquela cidade rebelde e má. Estão fazendo reparos nos muros e consertando os alicerces.

13 “Além disso, é preciso que o rei saiba que, se essa cidade for reconstruída e os seus muros reparados, não mais se pagarão impostos, tributos ou taxas, e as rendas do rei sofrerão prejuízo.

14 Agora, visto que estamos a serviço do palácio e não nos é conveniente ver a desonra do rei, nós enviamos esta mensagem ao rei,

15 a fim de que se faça uma pesquisa nos arquivos de seus antecessores. Nesses arquivos o rei descobrirá e saberá que essa cidade é uma cidade rebelde, problemática para reis e províncias, um lugar de revoltas desde épocas antigas, motivo pelo qual foi destruída.
