A Parábola do Semeador

1 Novamente Jesus começou a ensinar à beira-mar. Reuniu-se ao seu redor uma multidão tão grande que ele teve que entrar num barco e assentar-se nele. O barco estava no mar, enquanto todo o povo ficava na beira da praia.

2 Ele lhes ensinava muitas coisas por parábolas, dizendo em seu ensino:

3 “Ouçam! O semeador saiu a semear.

4 Enquanto lançava a semente, parte dela caiu à beira do caminho, e as aves vieram e a comeram.

5 Parte dela caiu em terreno pedregoso, onde não havia muita terra; e logo brotou, porque a terra não era profunda.

6 Mas, quando saiu o sol, as plantas se queimaram e secaram, porque não tinham raiz.

7 Outra parte caiu entre espinhos, que cresceram e sufocaram as plantas, de forma que ela não deu fruto.

8 Outra ainda caiu em boa terra, germinou, cresceu e deu boa colheita, a trinta, sessenta e até cem por um”.

9 E acrescentou: “Aquele que tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça!”

10 Quando ele ficou sozinho, os Doze e os outros que estavam ao seu redor lhe fizeram perguntas acerca das parábolas.

11 Ele lhes disse: “A vocês foi dado o mistério do Reino de Deus, mas aos que estão fora tudo é dito por parábolas,

12 a fim de que,“ ‘ainda que vejam, não percebam;ainda que ouçam, não entendam;de outro modo, poderiam converter-se e ser perdoados!’^[a]”

13 Então Jesus lhes perguntou: “Vocês não entendem esta parábola? Como, então, compreenderão todas as outras?

14 O semeador semeia a palavra.

15 Algumas pessoas são como a semente à beira do caminho, onde a palavra é semeada. Logo que a ouvem, Satanás vem e retira a palavra nelas semeada.

16 Outras, como a semente lançada em terreno pedregoso, ouvem a palavra e logo a recebem com alegria.

17 Todavia, visto que não têm raiz em si mesmas, permanecem por pouco tempo. Quando surge alguma tribulação ou perseguição por causa da palavra, logo a abandonam.

18 Outras ainda, como a semente lançada entre espinhos, ouvem a palavra;

19 mas, quando chegam as preocupações desta vida, o engano das riquezas e os anseios por outras coisas sufocam a palavra, tornando-a infrutífera.

20 Outras pessoas são como a semente lançada em boa terra: ouvem a palavra, aceitam-na e dão uma colheita de trinta, sessenta e até cem por um”.

A Candeia

21 Ele lhes disse: “Quem traz uma candeia para ser colocada debaixo de uma vasilha ou de uma cama? Acaso não a coloca num lugar apropriado?

22 Porque não há nada oculto, senão para ser revelado, e nada escondido, senão para ser trazido à luz.

23 Se alguém tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça!

24 “Considerem atentamente o que vocês estão ouvindo”, continuou ele. “Com a medida com que medirem, vocês serão medidos; e ainda mais acrescentarão para vocês.

25 A quem tiver, mais lhe será dado; de quem não tiver, até o que tem lhe será tirado”.

A Parábola da Semente

26 Ele prosseguiu dizendo: “O Reino de Deus é semelhante a um homem que lança a semente sobre a terra.

27 Noite e dia, estando ele dormindo ou acordado, a semente germina e cresce, embora ele não saiba como.

28 A terra por si própria produz o grão: primeiro o talo, depois a espiga e, então, o grão cheio na espiga.

29 Logo que o grão fica maduro, o homem lhe passa a foice, porque chegou a colheita”.

A Parábola do Grão de Mostarda

30 Novamente ele disse: “Com que compararemos o Reino de Deus? Que parábola usaremos para descrevê-lo?

31 É como um grão de mostarda, que é a menor semente que se planta na terra.

32 No entanto, uma vez plantado, cresce e se torna uma das maiores plantas, com ramos tão grandes que as aves do céu podem abrigar-se à sua sombra”.

33 Com muitas parábolas semelhantes Jesus lhes anunciava a palavra, tanto quanto podiam receber.

34 Não lhes dizia nada sem usar alguma parábola. Quando, porém, estava a sós com os seus discípulos, explicava-lhes tudo.

Jesus Acalma a Tempestade

35 Naquele dia, ao anoitecer, disse ele aos seus discípulos: “Vamos para o outro lado”.

36 Deixando a multidão, eles o levaram no barco, assim como estava. Outros barcos também o acompanhavam.

37 Levantou-se um forte vendaval, e as ondas se lançavam sobre o barco, de forma que este ia se enchendo de água.

38 Jesus estava na popa, dormindo com a cabeça sobre um travesseiro. Os discípulos o acordaram e clamaram: “Mestre, não te importas que morramos?”

39 Ele se levantou, repreendeu o vento e disse ao mar: “Aquiete-se! Acalme-se!” O vento se aquietou, e fez-se completa bonança.

40 Então perguntou aos seus discípulos: “Por que vocês estão com tanto medo? Ainda não têm fé?”

41 Eles estavam apavorados e perguntavam uns aos outros: “Quem é este que até o vento e o mar lhe obedecem?”

Chapter 4

The parable of the sower. (1-20) Other parables. (21-34) Christ stills the tempest. (35-41)

Verses 1-20 This parable contained instruction so important, that all capable of hearing were bound to attend to it. There are many things we are concerned to know; and if we understand not the plain truths of the gospel, how shall we learn those more difficult! It will help us to value the privileges we enjoy as disciples of Christ, if we seriously consider the deplorable state of all who have not such privileges. In the great field of the church, the word of God is dispensed to all. Of the many that hear the word of the gospel, but few receive it, so as to bring forth fruit. Many are much affected with the word for the present, who yet receive no abiding benefit. The word does not leave abiding impressions upon the minds of men, because their hearts are not duly disposed to receive it. The devil is very busy about careless hearers, as the fowls of the air go about the seed that lies above ground. Many continue in a barren, false profession, and go down to hell. Impressions that are not deep, will not last. Many do not mind heart-work, without which religion is nothing. Others are hindered from profiting by the word of God, by abundance of the world. And those who have but little of the world, may yet be ruined by indulging the body. God expects and requires fruit from those who enjoy the gospel, a temper of mind and Christian graces daily exercised, Christian duties duly performed. Let us look to the Lord, that by his new-creating grace our hearts may become good ground, and that the good seed of the word may produce in our lives those good words and works which are through Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of God the Father.

Verses 21-34 These declarations were intended to call the attention of the disciples to the word of Christ. By his thus instructing them, they were made able to instruct others; as candles are lighted, not to be covered, but to be placed on a candlestick, that they may give light to a room. This parable of the good seed, shows the manner in which the kingdom of God makes progress in the world. Let but the word of Christ have the place it ought to have in a soul, and it will show itself in a good conversation. It grows gradually: first the blade; then the ear; after that the full corn in the ear. When it is sprung up, it will go forward. The work of grace in the soul is, at first, but the day of small things; yet it has mighty products even now, while it is in its growth; but what will there be when it is perfected in heaven!

Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, be dumb. When without are fightings, and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, "Peace, be still," there is a great calm at once. Why are ye so fearful? Though there may be cause for some fear, yet not for such fear as this. Those may suspect their faith, who can have such a thought as that Jesus careth not though his people perish. How imperfect are the best of saints! Faith and fear take their turns while we are in this world; but ere long, fear will be overcome, and faith will be lost in sight.
