1 Corinthians 8

BBE

GNT

1 Now about things offered to images: we all seem to ourselves to have knowledge. Knowledge gives pride, but love gives true strength.
1 Now, concerning what you wrote about food offered to idols. It is true, of course, that "all of us have knowledge," as they say. Such knowledge, however, puffs a person up with pride; but love builds up.
2 If anyone seems to himself to have knowledge, so far he has not the right sort of knowledge about anything;
2 Those who think they know something really don't know as they ought to know.
3 But if anyone has love for God, God has knowledge of him.
3 But the person who loves God is known by him.
4 So, then, as to the question of taking food offered to images, we are certain that an image is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but one.
4 So then, about eating the food offered to idols: we know that an idol stands for something that does not really exist; we know that there is only the one God.
5 For though there are those who have the name of gods, in heaven or on earth, as there are a number of gods and a number of lords,
5 Even if there are so-called "gods," whether in heaven or on earth, and even though there are many of these "gods" and "lords,"
6 There is for us only one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we are for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we have our being through him.
6 yet there is for us only one God, the Father, who is the Creator of all things and for whom we live; and there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom we live.
7 Still, all men have not that knowledge: but some, being used till now to the image, are conscious that they are taking food which has been offered to the image; and because they are not strong in the faith, their minds are troubled.
7 But not everyone knows this truth. Some people have been so used to idols that to this day when they eat such food they still think of it as food that belongs to an idol; their conscience is weak, and they feel they are defiled by the food.
8 But God's approval of us is not based on the food we take: if we do not take it we are no worse for it; and if we take it we are no better.
8 Food, however, will not improve our relation with God; we shall not lose anything if we do not eat, nor shall we gain anything if we do eat.
9 But take care that this power of yours does not give cause for trouble to the feeble.
9 Be careful, however, not to let your freedom of action make those who are weak in the faith fall into sin.
10 For if a man sees you, who have knowledge, taking food as a guest in the house of an image, will it not give him, if he is feeble, the idea that he may take food offered to images?
10 Suppose a person whose conscience is weak in this matter sees you, who have so-called "knowledge," eating in the temple of an idol; will not this encourage him to eat food offered to idols?
11 And so, through your knowledge, you are the cause of destruction to your brother, for whom Christ underwent death.
11 And so this weak person, your brother for whom Christ died, will perish because of your "knowledge"!
12 And in this way, doing evil to the brothers, and causing trouble to those whose faith is feeble, you are sinning against Christ.
12 And in this way you will be sinning against Christ by sinning against other Christians and wounding their weak conscience.
13 For this reason, if food is a cause of trouble to my brother, I will give up taking meat for ever, so that I may not be a cause of trouble to my brother.
13 So then, if food makes a believer sin, I will never eat meat again, so as not to make a believer fall into sin.
