1 OR i Filistei combatterono contro ad Israele; e gl’Israeliti fuggirono d’innanzi a’ Filistei, e caddero morti nel monte di Ghilboa.

2 Ed i Filistei perseguitarono di presso Saulle, e i suoi figliuoli; e percossero Gionatan, ed Abinadab, e Malchi-sua, figliuoli di Saulle.

3 E lo sforzo della battaglia si voltò contro a Saulle, e gli arcieri lo scontrarono; ed egli ebbe gran paura degli arcieri.

4 Allora Saulle disse al suo scudiere: Tira fuori la tua spada, e trafiggimi con essa, che talora questi incirconcisi non vengano, e mi scherniscano. Ma il suo scudiere non volle farlo, perciocchè egli temeva forte. Laonde Saulle prese la spada, e si lasciò cadere sopra essa.

5 E lo scudiere di Saulle, veggendo ch’egli era morto, si lasciò cadere anch’egli sopra la sua spada, e morì.

6 Così morì Saulle ed i suoi tre figliuoli, e tutta la gente di casa sua.

7 E tutti gl’Israeliti, che stavano nella valle, veggendo che gl’Israeliti erano fuggiti, e che Saulle ed i suoi figliuoli erano morti, abbandonarono le lor città, e se ne fuggirono; ed i Filistei vennero, ed abitarono in esse.

8 Or il giorno appresso, i Filistei vennero per ispogliar gli uccisi, e trovarono Saulle ed i suoi figliuoli che giacevano sopra il monte di Ghilboa.

9 Ed essi lo spogliarono, e gli tolsero la testa e le armi; e mandarono nel paese de’ Filistei d’ogn’intorno a portarne le novelle nei tempii de’ loro idoli, ed al popolo;

10 e posero le armi di Saulle nel tempio de’ loro dii; ed appiccarono il suo teschio nel tempio di Dagon.

11 Or tutti que’ di Iabes di Galaad, avendo inteso tutto quello che i Filistei aveano fatto a Saulle,

12 tutti gli uomini di valore d’infra loro si levarono, e tolsero via il corpo di Saulle, ed i corpi de’ suoi figliuoli, e li portarono in Iabes, e seppellirono le loro ossa sotto la quercia in Iabes, e digiunarono sette giorni.

13 Così morì Saulle per lo suo misfatto ch’egli avea commesso contro al Signore, non avendo osservata la parola del Signore; e anche, perchè avea ricercato lo spirito di Pitone, per domandarlo;

14 e non avea domandato il Signore; perciò egli lo fece morire, e trasportò il reame a Davide, figliuolo d’Isai.

Good News Translation GNT

1 The Philistines fought a battle against the Israelites on Mount Gilboa. Many Israelites were killed there, and the rest of them, including King Saul and his sons, fled.

2 But the Philistines caught up with them and killed three of Saul's sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.

3 The fighting was heavy around Saul, and he was hit by enemy arrows and badly wounded.

4 He said to the young man carrying his weapons, "Draw your sword and kill me, to keep these godless Philistines from gloating over me." But the young man was too terrified to do it. So Saul took his own sword and threw himself on it.

5 The young man saw that Saul was dead, so he too threw himself on his sword and died.

6 So Saul and his three sons all died together, and none of his descendants ever ruled.

7 When the Israelites who lived in Jezreel Valley heard that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and ran off. Then the Philistines came and occupied them.

8 The day after the battle the Philistines went to plunder the corpses, and they found the bodies of Saul and his sons lying on Mount Gilboa.

9 They cut off Saul's head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers with them throughout Philistia to tell the good news to their idols and to their people.

10 They put his weapons in one of their temples and hung his head in the temple of their god Dagon.

11 When the people of Jabesh in Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

12 the bravest men went and got the bodies of Saul and his sons and took them to Jabesh. They buried them there under an oak and fasted for seven days.

13 Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He disobeyed the Lord's commands; he tried to find guidance by consulting the spirits of the dead

14 instead of consulting the Lord. So the Lord killed him and gave control of the kingdom to David son of Jesse.
