1 OR Satana si levò contro ad Israele, ed incitò Davide ad annoverare Israele.

2 E Davide disse a Ioab, ed a’ capi del popolo: Andate, annoverate Israele da Beerseba, fino in Dan; e rapportatemene il numero, acciocchè io lo sappia.

3 E Ioab disse: Il Signore accresca il suo popolo per cento cotanti; non sono essi tutti, o re, mio signore, servitori del mio signore? perchè cerca il mio signore questa cosa? perchè sarebbe questo imputato a colpa ad Israele?

4 Ma la parola del re prevalse a Ioab. Ioab adunque si partì, e andò attorno per tutto Israele; poi tornò in Gerusalemme.

5 E diede a Davide la somma del popolo annoverato; e di tutto Israele vi erano undici volte centomila uomini che potevano trar la spada; e di Giuda, quattrocensettantamila uomini, che potevano trar la spada.

6 Or egli non annoverò Levi, nè Beniamino, fra gli altri; perciocchè il comandamento del re gli era abbominevole.

7 Or questa cosa dispiacque a Dio; laonde egli percosse Israele.

8 E Davide disse a Dio: Io ho gravemente peccato d’aver fatta questa cosa; ma ora fa’, ti prego, passar via l’iniquità del tuo servitore; perciocchè io ho fatta una gran follia.

9 E il Signore parlò a Gad, veggente di Davide, dicendo:

10 Va’, e parla a Davide, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore: Io ti propongo tre cose; eleggitene una, ed io te la farò.

11 Gad adunque venne a Davide, e gli disse: Così ha detto il Signore: Prenditi:

12 o la fame per tre anni; o di non poter durare davanti a’ tuoi nemici per tre mesi, e che la spada de’ tuoi nemici ti aggiunga; ovvero che la spada del Signore, e la pestilenza sia per tre giorni nel paese; e che l’Angelo del Signore faccia il guasto per tutte le contrade d’Israele. Ora dunque, vedi ciò che io ho da rispondere a Colui che mi ha mandato.

13 E Davide rispose a Gad: Io son grandemente distretto: deh! che io caggia nelle mani del Signore; conciossiachè grandissime sieno le sue compassioni; e ch’io non caggia nelle mani degli uomini.

14 Il Signore adunque mandò una pestilenza in Israele, e morirono settantamila uomini d’Israele.

15 Or Iddio mandò l’Angelo in Gerusalemme, per farvi il guasto; ma, come egli era per fare il guasto, il Signore riguardò, e si pentì del male, e disse all’Angelo che distruggeva: Basta; ritrai ora la tua mano. Or l’Angelo del Signore stava in piè presso dell’aia di Ornan Gebuseo.

16 E Davide alzò gli occhi, e vide l’Angelo del Signore che stava in piè fra terra e cielo, avendo in mano la spada tratta, vibrata contro a Gerusalemme. E Davide, e tutti gli Anziani, coperti di sacchi, caddero sopra le lor facce.

17 E Davide disse a Dio: Non sono io quello che ho comandato che si annoverasse il popolo? Io dunque son quello che ho peccato, ed ho del tutto mal fatto; ma queste pecore che cosa hanno fatto? deh! Signore Iddio mio, sia la tua mano contro a me, e contro alla casa di mio padre; e non sia contro al tuo popolo, per percuoterlo di piaga.

18 Allora l’Angelo del Signore disse a Gad, che dicesse a Davide di salire all’aia di Ornan Gebuseo, per rizzar quivi un altare al Signore.

19 E Davide salì là, secondo la parola di Gad, ch’egli avea detta a Nome del Signore.

20 Or Ornan, trebbiando del grano, si era rivolto, ed avea veduto l’Angelo; e si era nascosto, co’ suoi quattro figliuoli.

21 E quando Davide fu giunto ad Ornan, Ornan riguardò; ed avendo veduto Davide, uscì fuor dell’aia, e s’inchinò a Davide con la faccia verso terra.

22 E Davide disse ad Ornan: Dammi il luogo di quest’aia; acciocchè io vi edifichi un altare al Signore; dammelo per lo suo giusto prezzo; acciocchè questa piaga sia arrestata d’in sul popolo.

23 Ed Ornan disse a Davide: Prenditelo, e faccia il re, mio signore, ciò che gli piace; vedi, io ti dono questi buoi per olocausti, e queste trebbie per legne, e questo grano per offerta; io ti dono il tutto.

24 Ma il re Davide disse ad Ornan: No; anzi io del tutto comprerò queste cose per giusto prezzo; perciocchè io non voglio presentare al Signore ciò che è tuo, nè offerire olocausto che io abbia avuto in dono.

25 Davide adunque diede ad Ornan per quel luogo il peso di seicento sicli d’oro.

26 E Davide edificò quivi un altare al Signore, ed offerse olocausti, e sacrificii da render grazie, ed invocò il Signore, il quale gli rispose dal cielo col fuoco ch’egli mandò in su l’altar dell’olocausto.

27 E per comandamento del Signore, l’Angelo rimise la sua spada nel fodero.

28 In quel tempo, Davide veggendo che il Signore gli avea risposto nell’aia di Ornan Gebuseo, vi sacrificò.

29 Or il Tabernacolo del Signore che Mosè avea fatto nel deserto, e l’Altare degli olocausti, era in quel tempo nell’alto luogo in Gabaon.

30 E Davide non potè andare davanti a quello, per ricercare Iddio; perciocchè egli era spaventato per la spada dell’Angelo del Signore.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Satan wanted to bring trouble on the people of Israel, so he made David decide to take a census.

2 David gave orders to Joab and the other officers, "Go through Israel, from one end of the country to the other, and count the people. I want to know how many there are."

3 Joab answered, "May the Lord make the people of Israel a hundred times more numerous than they are now! Your Majesty, they are all your servants. Why do you want to do this and make the whole nation guilty?"

4 But the king made Joab obey the order. Joab went out, traveled through the whole country of Israel, and then returned to Jerusalem.

5 He reported to King David the total number of men capable of military service: 1,100,000 in Israel and 470,000 in Judah.

6 Because Joab disapproved of the king's command, he did not take any census of the tribes of Levi and Benjamin.

7 God was displeased with what had been done, so he punished Israel.

8 David said to God, "I have committed a terrible sin in doing this! Please forgive me. I have acted foolishly."

9 Then the Lord said to Gad, David's prophet,

10 "Go and tell David that I am giving him three choices. I will do whichever he chooses."

11 Gad went to David, told him what the Lord had said, and asked, "Which is it to be?

12 Three years of famine? Or three months of running away from the armies of your enemies? Or three days during which the Lord attacks you with his sword and sends an epidemic on your land, using his angel to bring death throughout Israel? What answer shall I give the Lord?"

13 David replied to Gad, "I am in a desperate situation! But I don't want to be punished by people. Let the Lord himself be the one to punish me, because he is merciful."

14 So the Lord sent an epidemic on the people of Israel, and seventy thousand of them died.

15 Then he sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem, but he changed his mind and said to the angel, "Stop! That's enough!" The angel was standing by the threshing place of Araunah, a Jebusite.

16 David saw the angel standing in midair, holding his sword in his hand, ready to destroy Jerusalem. Then David and the leaders of the people - all of whom were wearing sackcloth - bowed low, with their faces touching the ground.

17 David prayed, "O God, I am the one who did wrong. I am the one who ordered the census. What have these poor people done? Lord, my God, punish me and my family, and spare your people."

18 The angel of the Lord told Gad to command David to go and build an altar to the Lord at Araunah's threshing place.

19 David obeyed the Lord's command and went, as Gad had told him to.

20 There at the threshing place Araunah and his four sons were threshing wheat, and when they saw the angel, the sons ran and hid.

21 As soon as Araunah saw King David approaching, he left the threshing place and bowed low, with his face touching the ground.

22 David said to him, "Sell me your threshing place, so that I can build an altar to the Lord, to stop the epidemic. I'll give you the full price."

23 "Take it, Your Majesty," Araunah said, "and do whatever you wish. Here are these oxen to burn as an offering on the altar, and here are the threshing boards to use as fuel, and wheat to give as an offering. I give it all to you."

24 But the king answered, "No, I will pay you the full price. I will not give as an offering to the Lord something that belongs to you, something that costs me nothing."

25 And he paid Araunah six hundred gold coins for the threshing place.

26 He built an altar to the Lord there and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He prayed, and the Lord answered him by sending fire from heaven to burn the sacrifices on the altar.

27 The Lord told the angel to put his sword away, and the angel obeyed.

28 David saw by this that the Lord had answered his prayer, so he offered sacrifices on the altar at Araunah's threshing place.

29 The Tent of the Lord's presence which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar on which sacrifices were burned were still at the place of worship at Gibeon at this time;

30 but David was not able to go there to worship God, because he was afraid of the sword of the Lord's angel.
