1 OR questi furono i figliuoli di Ruben, primogenito d’Israele perciocchè egli era il primogenito; ma dopo ch’ebbe contaminato il letto di suo padre, la sua primogenitura fu data a’ figliuoli di Giuseppe, figliuolo d’Israele; non però per tenere il luogo della primogenitura nella genealogia.

These are the descendants of Reuben, the oldest of Jacob's sons. (Because he had sex with one of his father's concubines, he lost the rights belonging to the first-born son, and those rights were given to Joseph.
2 Perciocchè Giuda ebbe la maggioranza sopra i suoi fratelli; e di lui sono usciti i conduttori; ma il diritto della primogenitura fu dato a Giuseppe.

It was the tribe of Judah, however, that became the strongest and provided a ruler for all the tribes.)
3 I figliuoli, dico, di Ruben, primogenito d’Israele, furono Hanoc, e Pallu, Hesron, e Carmi.

Reuben, the oldest of Jacob's sons, had four sons: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

These are the descendants of Joel from generation to generation: Shemaiah, Gog, Shimei, Micah, Reaiah, Baal, and Beerah. The Assyrian emperor, Tiglath Pileser, captured Beerah, a leader of the tribe, and deported him.
5 di cui fu figliuolo Mica, di cui fu figliuolo Reaia, di cui fu figliuolo Baal,

8 figliuolo di Azaz, figliuolo di Sema, figliuolo di Ioel. Esso abitò in Aroer, fino a Nebo, ed a Baal-meon.

and Bela, the son of Azaz and grandson of Shema, of the clan of Joel. This clan lived in Aroer and in the territory from there north to Nebo and Baal Meon.
9 Dipoi egli abitò verso il Levante, dal fiume Eufrate, fino all’entrata del deserto; perciocchè i lor bestiami erano moltiplicati nel paese di Galaad.

They had large herds in the land of Gilead, and so they occupied the land as far east as the desert that stretches all the way to the Euphrates River.
10 Laonde, al tempo di Saulle, fecero guerra contro agli Hagareni, i quali caddero uccisi per le lor mani; ed essi abitarono nelle loro stanze, lungo tutta la parte orientale di Galaad.

In the time of King Saul the tribe of Reuben attacked the Hagrites, killed them in battle, and occupied their land in the eastern part of Gilead.
11 E I figliuoli di Gad abitarono dirimpetto a loro, nel paese di Basan, fino a Salca.

The tribe of Gad lived to the north of Reuben in the land of Bashan as far east as Salecah.
12 Ioel fu il capo principale in Basan, e Safan, il secondo; poi Ianai, poi Safat.

Joel was the founder of the leading clan, and Shapham of the second most important clan. Janai and Shaphat were founders of other clans in Bashan.
13 E i lor fratelli, secondo le famiglie loro paterne, furono Micael, e Mesullam, e Seba, e Iorai, e Iacan, e Zia, ed Eber; sette in tutto.

The other members of the tribe belonged to the following seven clans: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber.
14 Questi erano figliuoli di Abihail, figliuolo di Huri, figliuolo di Iaroa, figliuolo di Galaad, figliuolo di Micael, figliuolo di Iesisai, figliuolo di Iado, figliuolo di Buz.

They were descendants of Abihail son of Huri, whose ancestors were traced back as follows: Abihail, Huri, Jaroah, Gilead, Michael, Jeshishai, Jahdo, Buz.
15 Ahi, figliuolo di Abdiel, figliuolo di Guni, fu il capo principale delle famiglie loro paterne.

Ahi, the son of Abdiel and grandson of Guni, was head of these clans.
16 Ed essi abitarono in Galaad, ed in Basan, e nelle terre del suo territorio, ed in tutto il contado di Saron, fino alle sue uscite.

They lived in the territory of Bashan and Gilead, in the towns there and all over the pasture lands of Sharon
17 La genealogia di tutti costoro fu composta per le lor generazioni al tempo di Giotam, re di Giuda, ed al tempo di Geroboamo, re d’Israele.

18 I figliuoli di Ruben, e i Gaditi, e la mezza tribù di Manasse, in numero di quarantaquattromila settecensessanta d’infra gli uomini prodi, che portavano scudo e spada, e tiravano l’arco, ed erano ammaestrati alla guerra, per uscir fuori in battaglia,

In the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh there were 44,760 soldiers, well-trained in the use of shields, swords, and bows.
19 fecero guerra agli Hagareni, ed a Ietur, ed a Nafis, ed a Nodab.

They went to war against the Hagrite tribes of Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.
20 Ed ebbero soccorso contro a loro; talchè gli Hagareni, e tutti quelli che erano con loro furono dati nelle lor mani; perciocchè essi gridarono a Dio nella battaglia, ed egli li esaudì; perciocchè si erano confidati in lui.

They put their trust in God and prayed to him for help, and God answered their prayers and made them victorious over the Hagrites and their allies.
21 E presero i lor bestiami, in numero di cinquantamila cammelli, e dugencinquantamila pecore, duemila asini, e centomila anime umane.

They captured from the enemy 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep, and 2,000 donkeys, and took 100,000 prisoners of war.
22 Perciocchè molti erano caduti uccisi; perchè quella battaglia era da Dio; ed essi abitarono in luogo loro fino al tempo della cattività.

They killed many of the enemy, because the war was God's will. And they went on living in that territory until the exile.
23 I FIGLIUOLI della mezza tribù di Manasse abitarono anch’essi in quel paese; e moltiplicarono da Basan fino a Baal-hermon, ed a Senir, ed alla montagna di Hermon.

The people of East Manasseh settled in the territory of Bashan as far north as Baal Hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon, and their population increased greatly.
24 E questi furono i capi delle lor famiglie paterne: Efer, ed Isi, ed Eliel, ed Azriel, e Geremia, ed Hodavia, e Iadiel, uomini di valore, e famosi, capi delle lor famiglie paterne.

The following were the heads of their clans: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel. They were all outstanding soldiers, well-known leaders of their clans.
25 Ma essi commisero misfatto contro all’Iddio de’ lor padri, e fornicarono dietro agl’iddii de’ popoli del paese, i quali il Signore avea distrutti d’innanzi a loro.

But the people were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors and deserted him to worship the gods of the nations whom God had driven out of the land.
26 Laonde l’Iddio d’Israele eccitò lo spirito di Pul, re degli Assiri; e lo spirito di Tilgat-pilneser, re degli Assiri, i quali ne menarono in cattività i Rubeniti, e i Gaditi, e la mezza tribù di Manasse; e li condussero in Hala, ed in Habor, ed in Hara, e presso al fiume Gozan, dove son restati fino al dì d’oggi.

So God caused Emperor Pul of Assyria (also known as Tiglath Pileser) to invade their country. He deported the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh and settled them permanently in Halah, Habor, and Hara, and by the Gozan River.
