1 COSÌ tutti gl’Israeliti furono annoverati per le lor generazioni; ed ecco, sono descritti nel libro dei re d’Israele. Ora, dopo che que’ di Giuda furono stati menati in cattività in Babilonia, per li lor misfatti;

2 e che i primieri abitatori, ch’erano altre volte dimorati nelle lor possessioni, furono ritornati nelle lor città: Israeliti, sacerdoti, Leviti, e Netinei;

3 in Gerusalemme abitarono dei figliuoli di Giuda, e de’ figliuoli di Beniamino, e de’ figliuoli di Efraim e di Manasse:

4 Utai, figliuolo di Ammihud, figliuolo di Omri, figliuolo d’Imri, figliuolo di Bani, de’ figliuoli di Fares, figliuolo di Giuda.

5 E de’ Siloniti: Asaia il primogenito, ed i suoi figliuoli.

6 E de’ figliuoli di Zara: Ieuel, ed i suoi fratelli in numero di seicennovanta.

7 E de’ figliuoli di Beniamino: Sallu, figliuolo di Mesullam, figliuolo di Hodavia, figliuolo di Hassenua;

8 ed Ibnea, figliuolo di Ieroham, ed Ela, figliuolo di Uzzi, figliuolo di Micri; e Mesullam, figliuolo di Sefatia, figliuolo di Reuel, figliuolo d’Ibnia;

9 ed i lor fratelli, spartiti per le lor generazioni, in numero di novecencinquantasei; tutti coloro furono capi di famiglie paterne della casa de’ lor padri.

10 E de’ sacerdoti: Iedaia, e Ioiarib, e Iachin;

11 ed Azaria, figliuolo d’Hilchia, figliuolo di Mesullam, figliuolo di Sadoc, figliuolo di Meraiot, figliuolo di Ahitub, conduttore della Casa di Dio.

12 Ed Adaia, figliuolo di Ieroham, figliuolo di Pashur, figliuolo di Malchia; e Masai, figliuolo di Adiel, figliuolo di Iazera, figliuolo di Mesullam, figliuolo di Messillemit, figliuolo d’Immer;

13 co’ lor fratelli, capi delle lor famiglie paterne, in numero di millesettecensessanta, uomini prodi e valenti, per l’opera del servigio della Casa di Dio.

14 E de’ Leviti: Semaia, figliuolo di Hassub, figliuolo di Azricam, figliuolo di Hasabia, de’ figliuoli di Merari.

15 E Bacbaccar, ed Heres, e Galal, e Mattania, figliuolo di Mica, figliuolo di Zicri, figliuolo di Asaf;

16 ed Obaidia, figliuolo di Semaia, figliuolo di Galal, figliuolo di Iedutun; e Berechia, figliuolo di Asa, figliuolo di Elcana, il quale abitò nelle villate de’ Netofatiti.

17 E de’ portinai: Sallum, ed Accub, e Talmon, ed Ahiman, co’ lor fratelli, dei quali fu capo Sallum;

18 e lo è infino ad ora, ed ha la guardia della porta del re, verso Oriente; costoro furono portinai, fra le schiere de’ figliuoli di Levi;

19 come Sallum, figliuolo di Core, figliuolo di Ebiasaf, figliuolo di Core, ed i suoi fratelli Coriti, della casa paterna di esso, nell’opera del ministerio erano stati guardiani della soglia del Tabernacolo; come i lor padri nel campo del Signore, erano stati guardiani dell’entrata;

20 e Finees, figliuolo di Eleazaro, col quale il Signore era, anticamente era stato conduttore sopra loro;

21 e come Zaccaria, figliuolo di Meselemia, era stato portinaio dell’entrata del Tabernacolo della convenenza.

22 Tutti questi sono quelli che furono scelti per portinai nelle soglie, in numero di dugento dodici. Essi furono annoverati per le lor generazioni nelle lor villate. Or Davide, e il veggente Samuele, li aveano stabiliti nell’ufficio loro.

23 Ed essi, e i lor figliuoli, erano costituiti sopra le porte della Casa del Signore, della Casa del Tabernacolo, per far la guardia a vicenda.

24 I portinai erano disposti per li quattro venti: dall’Oriente, dall’Occidente, dal Settentrione, e dal Mezzodì.

25 E i lor fratelli, ch’erano nelle lor villate, aveano da venire a dimorar con essi per sette giorni, di tempo in tempo.

26 Perciocchè quei quattro maggiori portinai Leviti erano del continuo in ufficio, ed aveano la cura delle camere, e tesori della Casa di Dio.

27 E giacevano la notte intorno alla Casa di Dio; perciocchè la guardia ne era loro imposta, ed aveano il carico di aprirla ogni mattina.

28 Ed alcuni di loro aveano la cura dei vasellamenti del servigio; perciocchè si portavano dentro a conto, e si traevano altresì fuori a conto.

29 Ed altri di loro erano costituiti sopra le altre masserizie, e sopra tutti gli arredi sacri, e sopra il fior della farina, e sopra il vino, e sopra l’olio, e sopra l’incenso, e sopra gli aromati.

30 Ma quelli che componevano il profumo degli aromati, erano de’ figliuoli de’ sacerdoti.

31 E d’infra i Leviti, Mattitia, primogenito di Sallum, Corita, avea il carico di ciò che si coceva in su la tegghia.

32 E d’infra i lor fratelli, figliuoli de’ Chehatiti, alcuni aveano la cura de’ pani disposti per ordine, per apparecchiarli ogni sabato.

33 Altri eziandio erano cantori, capi di famiglie paterne de’ Leviti, i quali stavano nelle camere, esenti d’altra cura; perciocchè l’ufficio loro richiedeva che fossero giorno e notte in opera.

34 Questi furono i capi delle famiglie paterne dei Leviti, capi delle lor generazioni. Essi abitarono in Gerusalemme.

35 Or in Gabaon abitò Ieiel, padre di Gabaon; ed il nome della sua moglie era Maaca.

36 E il suo figliuolo primogenito fu Abdon; poi ebbe Sur, e Chis,

37 e Baal, e Ner, e Nadab, e Ghedor, ed Ahio, e Zaccaria, e Miclot.

38 E Miclot generò Simeam; ed essi abitarono dirimpetto ai lor fratelli in Gerusalemme, co’ lor fratelli.

39 E Ner generò Chis, e Chis generò Saulle, e Saulle generò Gionatan, e Malchi-sua, ed Abinadab, ed Esbaal.

40 E il figliuolo di Gionatan fu Merib-baal; e Merib-baal generò Mica.

41 Ed i figliuoli di Mica furono Piton, e Melec, e Tarea, ed Achaz,

42 il quale generò Iara. E Iara generò Alemet, ed Azmavet, e Zimri; e Zimri generò Mosa.

43 E Mosa generò Bina, di cui fu figliuolo Refaia, di cui fu figliuolo Elasa, di cui fu figliuolo Asel.

44 Ed Asel ebbe sei figliuoli, i cui nomi sono: Azricam, e Bocru, ed Ismaele, e Searia, ed Obadia, ed Hanan. Questi furono i figliuoli di Asel.

1 All the people of Israel were listed according to their families, and this information was recorded in [The Book of the Kings of Israel.] The people of Judah had been deported to Babylon as punishment for their sins.

2 The first to return to their property in the cities included Israelite citizens, priests, Levites, and Temple workers.

3 People from the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh went to live in Jerusalem.

4 There were 690 families of the tribe of Judah who lived in Jerusalem. The descendants of Judah's son Perez had as their leader Uthai, the son of Ammihud and grandson of Omri. His other ancestors included Imri and Bani. The descendants of Judah's son Shelah had as their leader Asaiah, who was the head of his family. The descendants of Judah's son Zerah had Jeuel as their leader.

7 The following members of the tribe of Benjamin lived in Jerusalem: Sallu son of Meshullam, who was the son of Hodaviah, the son of Hassenuah Ibneiah son of Jeroham Elah, the son of Uzzi and grandson of Michri Meshullam son of Shephatiah, who was the son of Reuel, the son of Ibnijah

10 The following priests lived in Jerusalem: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, and Jachin Azariah son of Hilkiah (the chief official in the Temple), whose ancestors included Meshullam, Zadok, Meraioth, and Ahitub Adaiah son of Jeroham, whose ancestors included Pashhur and Malchijah Maasai son of Adiel, whose ancestors included Jahzerah, Meshullam, Meshillemith, and Immer

13 The priests who were heads of families totaled 1,760. They were experts in all the work carried on in the Temple.

14 The following Levites lived in Jerusalem: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, whose ancestors included Azrikam and Hashabiah, of the clan of Merari Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal Mattaniah son of Mica, whose ancestors included Zichri and Asaph Obadiah son of Shemaiah, whose ancestors included Galal and Jeduthun Berechiah, the son of Asa and grandson of Elkanah, who lived in the territory that belonged to the town of Netophah

17 The following Temple guards lived in Jerusalem: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, and Ahiman. Shallum was their leader.

18 Down to that time members of their clans had been stationed at the eastern entrance to the King's Gate. Formerly they had stood guard at the gates to the camps of the Levites.

19 Shallum, the son of Kore and grandson of Ebiasaph, together with his fellow members of the clan of Korah, was responsible for guarding the entrance to the Tent of the Lord's presence, just as their ancestors had been when they were in charge of the Lord's camp.

20 Phinehas son of Eleazar - may the Lord be with him! - had supervised them at one time.

21 Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was also a guard at the entrance to the Tent of the Lord's presence.

22 In all, 212 men were chosen as guards for the entrances and gates. They were registered according to the villages where they lived. It was King David and the prophet Samuel who had put their ancestors in these responsible positions.

23 They and their descendants continued to guard the gates to the Temple.

24 There was a gate facing in each direction, north, south, east, and west, and each had a chief guard.

25 These guards were assisted by their relatives, who lived in the villages and who had to take turns at guard duty for seven days at a time.

26 The four chief guards were Levites and had the final responsibility. They were also responsible for the rooms in the Temple and for the supplies kept there.

27 They lived near the Temple, because it was their duty to guard it and to open the gates every morning.

28 Other Levites were responsible for the utensils used in worship. They checked them out and checked them back in every time they were used.

29 Others were in charge of the other sacred equipment, and of the flour, wine, olive oil, incense, and spices.

30 But the responsibility for mixing the spices belonged to the priests.

31 A Levite named Mattithiah, oldest son of Shallum, of the clan of Korah, was responsible for preparing the baked offerings.

32 Members of the clan of Kohath were responsible for preparing the sacred bread for the Temple every Sabbath.

33 Some Levite families were responsible for the Temple music. The heads of these families lived in some of the Temple buildings and were free from other duties, because they were on call day and night.

34 The men named above were heads of Levite families, according to their ancestral lines. They were the leaders who lived in Jerusalem.

35 Jeiel founded the city of Gibeon and settled there. His wife was named Maacah.

36 His oldest son was Abdon, and his other sons were Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,

37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth,

38 the father of Shimeah. Their descendants lived in Jerusalem near other families of their clan.

39 Ner was the father of Kish, and Kish was the father of Saul. Saul had four sons: Jonathan, Malchishua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

40 Jonathan was the father of Meribbaal, who was the father of Micah.

41 Micah had four sons: Pithon, Melech, Tarea, and Ahaz.

42 Ahaz was the father of Jarah, who was the father of three sons: Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Moza,

43 Moza the father of Binea, Binea of Rephaiah, Rephaiah of Eleasah, and Eleasah of Azel.

44 Azel had six sons: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan.
