1 Kings 17

1 Elijah from Tishbe, who was one of the settlers in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As surely as the LORD lives, Israel's God, the one I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain these years unless I say so."
1 And then this happened: Elijah the Tishbite, from among the settlers of Gilead, confronted Ahab: "As surely as God lives, the God of Israel before whom I stand in obedient service, the next years are going to see a total drought - not a drop of dew or rain unless I say otherwise."
2 Then the LORD's word came to Elijah:
2 God then told Elijah,
3 Go from here and turn east. Hide by the Cherith Brook that faces the Jordan River.
3 "Get out of here, and fast. Head east and hide out at the Kerith Ravine on the other side of the Jordan River.
4 You can drink from the brook. I have also ordered the ravens to provide for you there.
4 You can drink fresh water from the brook; I've ordered the ravens to feed you."
5 Elijah went and did just what the LORD said. He stayed by the Cherith Brook that faced the Jordan River.
5 Elijah obeyed God's orders. He went and camped in the Kerith canyon on the other side of the Jordan.
6 The ravens brought bread and meat in the mornings and evenings. He drank from the Cherith Brook.
6 And sure enough, ravens brought him his meals, both breakfast and supper, and he drank from the brook.
7 After a while the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land.
7 Eventually the brook dried up because of the drought.
8 The LORD's word came to Elijah:
8 Then God spoke to him:
9 Get up and go to Zarephath near Sidon and stay there. I have ordered a widow there to take care of you.
9 "Get up and go to Zarephath in Sidon and live there. I've instructed a woman who lives there, a widow, to feed you."
10 Elijah left and went to Zarephath. As he came to the town gate, he saw a widow collecting sticks. He called out to her, "Please get a little water for me in this cup so I can drink."
10 So he got up and went to Zarephath. As he came to the entrance of the village he met a woman, a widow, gathering firewood. He asked her, "Please, would you bring me a little water in a jug? I need a drink."
11 She went to get some water. He then said to her, "Please get me a piece of bread."
11 As she went to get it, he called out, "And while you're at it, would you bring me something to eat?"
12 "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any food; only a handful of flour in a jar and a bit of oil in a bottle. Look at me. I'm collecting two sticks so that I can make some food for myself and my son. We'll eat the last of the food and then die."
12 She said, "I swear, as surely as your God lives, I don't have so much as a biscuit. I have a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a bottle; you found me scratching together just enough firewood to make a last meal for my son and me. After we eat it, we'll die."
13 Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid! Go and do what you said. Only make a little loaf of bread for me first. Then bring it to me. You can make something for yourself and your son after that.
13 Elijah said to her, "Don't worry about a thing. Go ahead and do what you've said. But first make a small biscuit for me and bring it back here. Then go ahead and make a meal from what's left for you and your son.
14 This is what Israel's God, the LORD, says: The jar of flour won't decrease and the bottle of oil won't run out until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth."
14 This is the word of the God of Israel: 'The jar of flour will not run out and the bottle of oil will not become empty before God sends rain on the land and ends this drought.'"
15 The widow went and did what Elijah said. So the widow, Elijah, and the widow's household ate for many days.
15 And she went right off and did it, did just as Elijah asked. And it turned out as he said - daily food for her and her family.
16 The jar of flour didn't decrease nor did the bottle of oil run out, just as the LORD spoke through Elijah.
16 The jar of meal didn't run out and the bottle of oil didn't become empty: God's promise fulfilled to the letter, exactly as Elijah had delivered it!
17 After these things, the son of the widow, who was the matriarch of the household, became ill. His sickness got steadily worse until he wasn't breathing anymore.
17 Later on the woman's son became sick. The sickness took a turn for the worse - and then he stopped breathing.
18 She said to Elijah, "What's gone wrong between us, man of God? Have you come to me to call attention to my sin and kill my son?"
18 The woman said to Elijah, "Why did you ever show up here in the first place - a holy man barging in, exposing my sins, and killing my son?"
19 Elijah replied, "Give your son to me." He took her son from her and carried him to the upper room where he was staying. Elijah laid him on his bed.
19 Elijah said, "Hand me your son."
20 Elijah cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, why is it that you have brought such evil upon the widow that I am staying with by killing her son?"
20 Then he prayed, "O God, my God, why have you brought this terrible thing on this widow who has opened her home to me? Why have you killed her son?"
21 Then he stretched himself over the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, "LORD my God, please give this boy's life back to him."
21 Three times he stretched himself out full-length on the boy, praying with all his might, "God, my God, put breath back into this boy's body!"
22 The LORD listened to Elijah's voice and gave the boy his life back. And he lived.
22 God listened to Elijah's prayer and put breath back into his body - he was alive!
23 Elijah brought the boy down from the upper room of the house and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, "Look, your son is alive!"
23 Elijah picked the boy up, carried him downstairs from the loft, and gave him to his mother. "Here's your son," said Elijah, "alive!"
24 "Now I know that you really are a man of God," the woman said to Elijah, "and that the LORD's word is truly in your mouth."
24 The woman said to Elijah, "I see it all now - you are a holy man. When you speak, God speaks - a true word!"
