1 ORA la regina di Seba, avendo intesa la fama di Salomone nel Nome del Signore, venne per far prova di lui con enimmi.

2 Ed entrò in Gerusalemme con un grandissimo seguito e con cammelli carichi di aromati, e con grandissima quantità d’oro, e di pietre preziose; e venne a Salomone, e parlò con lui di tutto ciò ch’ella avea nel cuore.

3 E Salomone le dichiarò tutto quello ch’ella propose; ei non vi fu cosa alcuna occulta al re, ch’egli non le dichiarasse.

4 Laonde le regina di Seba, veggendo tutta la sapienza di Salomone, e la casa ch’egli avea edificata;

5 e le vivande della sua tavola, e le stanze de’ suoi servitori, e l’ordine del servire de’ suoi ministri, e i lor vestimenti, e i suoi coppieri, e gli olocausti ch’egli offeriva nella Casa del Signore, svenne tutta.

6 E disse al re: Ciò che io avea inteso nel mio paese de’ fatti tuoi, e della tua sapienza, era ben la verità.

7 Ma io non credeva quello che se ne diceva, finchè io non son venuta, e che gli occhi miei non l’hanno veduto; ora ecco, non me n’era stata rapportata la metà; tu sopravanzi in sapienza ed in eccellenza la fama che io ne avea intesa.

8 Beati gli uomini tuoi; beati questi tuoi servitori, che stanno del continuo davanti a te, che odono la tua sapienza.

9 Sia benedetto il Signore Iddio tuo, il quale ti ha gradito, per metterti sopra il trono d’Israele, per l’amor che il Signore porta in eterno ad Israele; e ti ha costituito re, per far ragione e giustizia.

10 Poi ella donò al re centoventi talenti d’oro, e gran quantità d’aromati, e di pietre preziose. Mai più non vennero cotali aromati, in gran quantità, come la regina di Seba ne donò al re Salomone.

11 Il navilio di Hiram, che portava d’Ofir dell’oro, portò anche d’Ofir del legno d’Almugghim, in gran quantità, e delle pietre preziose;

12 ed il re fece di quel legno d’Almugghim delle sponde alla Casa del Signore, ed alla casa reale, e delle cetere, e de’ salteri per li cantori; tal legno d’Almugghim non era mai più venuto, e mai più, fino a quel giorno, non era stato veduto.

13 Il re Salomone altresì donò alla regina di Seba tutto ciò ch’ella ebbe a grado, e che gli chiese; oltre a quello che le donò secondo il poter del re. Poi ella si rimise in cammino; e, co’ suoi servitori, se ne andò al suo paese.

14 ORA il peso dell’oro, che veniva ogni anno a Salomone, era di seicensessantasei talenti d’oro;

15 oltre a quello che traeva da’ gabellieri, e dal traffico de’ mercatanti di spezierie, e da tutti i re dell’Arabia, e da’ principali signori del paese.

16 Onde il re Salomone fece fare dugento pavesi d’oro battuto, in ciascuno de’ quali impiegò siecento sicli d’oro;

17 e trecento scudi d’oro battuto, in ciascuno de’ quali impiegò tre mine d’oro. E il re li mise nella casa del bosco del Libano.

18 Il re fece, oltre a ciò, un gran trono d’avorio, il quale egli coperse d’oro fino.

19 Quel trono avea sei gradi, e la parte disopra di esso era rotonda di dietro, e nel luogo del seggio v’erano degli appoggiatoi, di qua e di là, e due leoni erano posti presso di quegli appoggiatoi.

20 V’erano eziandio dodici leoni, posti quivi sopra i sei gradi, di qua e di là. Niun tale trono fu giammai fatto in alcun regno.

21 E tutti i vasellamenti della credenza del re Salomone erano d’oro; parimente tutti i vasellamenti della casa del Bosco del Libano erano d’oro fino; nulla era d’argento; l’argento non era in alcuna stima al tempo di Salomone.

22 Perciocchè il re avea il navilio di Tarsis nel mare, insieme col navilio di Hiram. Il navilio di Tarsis veniva di tre in tre anni una volta, portando oro ed argento, avorio, e scimmie, e pappagalli.

23 Così il re Salomone fu, in ricchezze ed in sapienza, il più grande di tutti i re della terra.

24 E tutta la terra ricercava di veder Salomone, per intender la sua sapienza, la quale Iddio gli avea messa nel cuore.

25 E ciascuno gli portava anno per anno il suo presente, vasellamenti d’oro, e vasellamenti d’argento, e vestimenti, ed arme, ed aromati, e cavalli, e muli.

26 E Salomone adunò carri e cavalieri; ed ebbe mille quattrocento carri, e dodicimila cavalieri, i quali egli stanziò per le città ordinate per li carri, ed appresso di sè in Gerusalemme.

27 Ed il re fece che l’argento era in Gerusalemme in quantità come le pietre; ed i cedri come i sicomori che son per la campagna.

28 Ora, quant’è alla tratta de’ cavalli, e del filo che Salomone avea di Egitto, i fattori del re prendevano il filo a certo prezzo.

29 E due coppie di cavalli erano comperate e tratte fuor di Egitto per seicento sicli d’argento, e ciascun cavallo per cencinquanta. Così, per le mani di que’ fattori, se ne traeva fuori per tutti i re degli Hittei, e per i re della Siria.

1 The queen of Sheba heard of Solomon's fame, and she traveled to Jerusalem to test him with difficult questions.

2 She brought with her a large group of attendants, as well as camels loaded with spices, jewels, and a large amount of gold. When she and Solomon met, she asked him all the questions that she could think of.

3 He answered them all; there was nothing too difficult for him to explain.

4 The queen of Sheba heard Solomon's wisdom and saw the palace he had built.

5 She saw the food that was served at his table, the living quarters for his officials, the organization of his palace staff and the uniforms they wore, the servants who waited on him at feasts, and the sacrifices he offered in the Temple. It left her breathless and amazed.

6 She said to King Solomon, "What I heard in my own country about you and your wisdom is true!

7 But I couldn't believe it until I had come and seen it all for myself. But I didn't hear even half of it; your wisdom and wealth are much greater than what I was told.

8 How fortunate are your wives! And how fortunate your servants, who are always in your presence and are privileged to hear your wise sayings!

9 Praise the Lord your God! He has shown how pleased he is with you by making you king of Israel. Because his love for Israel is eternal, he has made you their king so that you can maintain law and justice."

10 She presented to King Solomon the gifts she had brought: almost five tons of gold and a very large amount of spices and jewels. The amount of spices she gave him was by far the greatest that he ever received at any time.

11 (Hiram's fleet, which had brought gold from Ophir, also brought from there a large amount of juniper wood and jewels.

12 Solomon used the wood to build railings in the Temple and the palace, and also to make harps and lyres for the musicians. It was the finest juniper wood ever imported into Israel; none like it has ever been seen again.)

13 King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba everything she asked for, besides all the other customary gifts that he had generously given her. Then she and her attendants returned to the land of Sheba.

14 Every year King Solomon received over twenty-five tons of gold,

15 in addition to the taxes paid by merchants, the profits from trade, and tribute paid by the Arabian kings and the governors of the Israelite districts.

16 Solomon made two hundred large shields and had each one overlaid with almost fifteen pounds of gold.

17 He also made three hundred smaller shields, overlaying each one of them with nearly four pounds of gold. He had all these shields placed in the Hall of the Forest of Lebanon.

18 He also had a large throne made. Part of it was covered with ivory and the rest of it was covered with the finest gold.

19 The throne had six steps leading up to it, with the figure of a lion at each end of every step, a total of twelve lions. At the back of the throne was the figure of a bull's head, and beside each of the two armrests was the figure of a lion. No throne like this had ever existed in any other kingdom.

21 All of Solomon's drinking cups were made of gold, and all the utensils in the Hall of the Forest of Lebanon were of pure gold. No silver was used, since it was not considered valuable in Solomon's day.

22 He had a fleet of ocean-going ships sailing with Hiram's fleet. Every three years his fleet would return, bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and monkeys.

23 King Solomon was richer and wiser than any other king,

24 and the whole world wanted to come and listen to the wisdom that God had given him.

25 Everyone who came brought him a gift - articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons, spices, horses, and mules. This continued year after year.

26 Solomon built up a force of fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand cavalry horses. Some of them he kept in Jerusalem and the rest he stationed in various other cities.

27 During his reign silver was as common in Jerusalem as stone, and cedar was as plentiful as ordinary sycamore in the foothills of Judah.

28 The king's agents controlled the export of horses from Musri and Cilicia,

29 and the export of chariots from Egypt. They supplied the Hittite and Syrian kings with horses and chariots, selling chariots for 600 pieces of silver each and horses for 150 each.
