1 ORA il re Salomone amò, oltre alla figliuola di Faraone, molte donne straniere, Moabite, Ammonite, Idumee, Sidonie, Hittee,

2 delle nazioni delle quali il Signore avea detto a’ figliuoli di Israele: Non entrate da esse, ed esse non entrino da voi; per certo esse faranno rivolgere il cuor vostro dietro ai loro dii; a quelle si congiunse Salomone per amore.

3 Ed ebbe settecento donne principesse, e trecento concubine; e le sue donne sviarono il suo cuore.

4 Al tempo della sua vecchiezza avvenne che le sue donne sviarono il suo cuore dietro ad altri dii; ed il suo cuore non fu intiero inverso il Signore Iddio suo, come era stato il cuor di Davide, suo padre.

5 E Salomone andò dietro ad Astoret, dio de’ Sidonii; e dietro a Milcom, abbominazione degli Ammoniti.

6 Così Salomone fece ciò che dispiace al Signore; e non seguitò il Signore appieno, come avea fatto Davide, suo padre.

7 Allora Salomone edificò un alto luogo a Chemos, abbominazione di Moab, nel monte ch’è dirimpetto a Gerusalemme; ed a Molec, abbominazione de’ figliuoli di Ammon.

8 Il simigliante fece per tutte le sue donne straniere, le quali facevano profumi, e sacrificavano agl’iddii loro.

9 Perciò il Signore si adirò contro a Salomone, perchè il suo cuore s’era sviato dal Signore Iddio d’Israele, che gli era apparito due volte.

10 E gli avea fatto comandamento intorno a questo, ch’egli non andasse dietro ad altri dii; ma egli non osservò ciò che il Signore avea comandato.

11 E il Signore disse a Salomone: Perciocchè questo è stato in te, e tu non hai osservato il mio patto, ed i miei statuti, i quali io ti avea imposti; io del tutto straccerò il reame d’addosso a te, e lo darò al tuo servitore.

12 Ma pure, per amor di Davide, tuo padre, io non farò questo a’ tuoi dì; io lo straccerò d’infra le mani del tuo figliuolo.

13 Nondimeno, io non istraccerò tutto il reame; io ne darò una tribù al tuo figliuolo, per amor di Davide, mio servitore; e per amor di Gerusalemme, che io ho eletta.

14 IL Signore adunque fece sorgere un avversario a Salomone, cioè Hadad Idumeo, ch’era del sangue reale di Edom.

15 Perciocchè avvenne, quando Davide era in Idumea, allora che Ioab, Capo dell’esercito, salì per far sotterrar gli uccisi, e percosse tutti i maschi d’Idumea

16 perciocchè Ioab, con tutto Israele, dimorò quivi sei mesi, finchè ebbe distrutti tutti i maschi d’Idumea,

17 che Hadad se ne fuggì, con alcuni uomini Idumei, de’ servitori di suo padre, per ridursi in Egitto. Or Hadad era giovanetto.

18 Costoro adunque si partirono di Madian, e vennero in Paran, e presero con loro degli uomini di Paran, e vennero in Egitto a Faraone, re di Egitto, il quale diede ad Hadad una casa, e gli assegnò il suo vitto, ed anche gli diede una terra.

19 Ed Hadad venne molto in grazia di Faraone; ed esso gli diede per moglie la sorella della sua moglie, la sorella della regina Tafnes.

20 E la sorella di Tafnes gli partorì Ghenubat, suo figliuolo, il quale Tafnes allevò nella casa di Faraone; e Ghenubat fu nella casa di Faraone per mezzo i figliuoli di esso.

21 Ora, quando Hadad ebbe inteso in Egitto, che Davide giaceva co’ suoi padri, e che Ioab, capo dell’esercito, era morto, disse a Faraone: Dammi licenza che io me ne vada al mio paese.

22 E Faraone gli disse: Ma che ti manca appresso di me, che ecco tu cerchi di andartene al tuo paese? Ed gli disse: Nulla; ma pur dammi licenza.

23 Iddio fece ancora sorgere un altro avversario a Salomone, cioè: Rezon, figliuolo d’Eliada, il quale se n’era fuggito d’appresso Hadadezer, re di Soba, suo signore.

24 Or egli adunò appresso di sè della gente, e fu capo di scherani, quando Davide uccideva quella gente. Poi egli ed i suoi andarono in Damasco, e dimorarono quivi, e regnarono in Damasco.

25 E Rezon fu avversario ad Israele tutto il tempo di Salomone, oltre al male che fece Hadad; ed infestò Israele, e regnò sopra la Siria.

26 GEROBOAMO ancora, figliuolo di Nebat Efrateo, da Sereda, servo di Salomone, il nome della cui madre era Serua, donna vedova, si levò contro al re.

27 E questa fu la cagione, per la quale si levò contro al re: Salomone edificava Millo, e chiudeva la rottura della Città di Davide, suo padre.

28 Or quell’uomo Geroboamo era valente e prode; e Salomone, veggendo il giovane che lavorava, l’ordinò sopra quelli della casa di Giuseppe, che portavano pesi.

29 Ora, essendo in quel tempo Geroboamo uscito fuor di Gerusalemme, il profeta Ahia Silonita lo trovò per la via, vestito d’una vesta nuova; ed erano amendue soli in su la campagna.

30 Ed Ahia prese la vesta nuova ch’egli avea indosso, e la stracciò in dodici pezzi.

31 E disse a Geroboamo: Prenditene dieci pezzi; perciocchè il Signore Iddio d’Israele ha detto così: Ecco, io straccio il reame d’infra le mani di Salomone, e te ne darò dieci tribù.

32 Ed a lui ne resterà una tribù, per amor di Davide, suo padre, e per amor di Gerusalemme, che è la città ch’io ho eletta d’infra tutte le tribù d’Israele.

33 Perciocchè essi mi hanno abbandonato, ed hanno adorato Astoret, dio de’ Sidonii, e Chemos, dio de’ Moabiti, e Milcom, dio de’ figliuoli di Ammon; e non son camminati nelle mie vie, per far ciò che mi piace, e per mettere in opera i miei statuti, e le mie leggi, come fece Davide, padre di Salomone.

34 Ma pure io non torrò dalle mani di lui nulla di tutto il reame; anzi lo manterrò principe tutto il tempo della vita sua, per amor di Davide, mio servitore, che io ho eletto, il quale ha osservati i miei comandamenti ed i miei statuti.

35 Ma io torrò il reame di mano al suo figliuolo, e ne darò a te dieci tribù;

36 ed al suo figliuolo ne darò una tribù; acciocchè vi resti del continuo una lampana a Davide, mio servitore, davanti a me, in Gerusalemme, che è la città, la quale io ho eletta per mettervi il mio Nome.

37 Io adunque ti prenderò, e tu regnerai interamente secondo il desiderio dell’anima tua, e sarai re sopra Israele.

38 Ed avverrà che, se tu ubbidisci a tutto quello che io ti comanderò, e cammini nelle mie vie, e fai ciò che mi piace, osservando i miei statuti ed i miei comandamenti, come ha fatto Davide, mio servitore, io sarò teco, e ti edificherò una casa stabile, come io l’avea edificata a Davide, e ti darò Israele.

39 Ed io affliggerò la progenie di Davide per questo, ma non già in perpetuo.

40 Perciò Salomone cercò di far morire Geroboamo; ma egli si levò, e se ne fuggì in Egitto, a Sisac, re di Egitto, e dimorò in Egitto fino alla morte di Salomone.

41 ORA, quant’è al rimanente dei fatti di Salomone, ed a quello ch’egli fece, ed alla sua sapienza; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel Libro dei fatti di Salomone?

42 Ora il tempo che Salomone regnò in Gerusalemme sopra tutto Israele, fu di quarant’anni.

43 Poi Salomone giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nella Città di Davide, suo padre; e Roboamo, suo figliuolo, regnò in luogo suo.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Solomon loved many foreign women. Besides the daughter of the king of Egypt he married Hittite women and women from Moab, Ammon, Edom, and Sidon.

2 He married them even though the Lord had commanded the Israelites not to intermarry with these people, because they would cause the Israelites to give their loyalty to other gods.

3 Solomon married seven hundred princesses and also had three hundred concubines. They made him turn away from God,

4 and by the time he was old they had led him into the worship of foreign gods. He was not faithful to the Lord his God, as his father David had been.

5 He worshiped Astarte, the goddess of Sidon, and Molech, the disgusting god of Ammon.

6 He sinned against the Lord and was not true to him as his father David had been.

7 On the mountain east of Jerusalem he built a place to worship Chemosh, the disgusting god of Moab, and a place to worship Molech, the disgusting god of Ammon.

8 He also built places of worship where all his foreign wives could burn incense and offer sacrifices to their own gods.

9 Even though the Lord, the God of Israel, had appeared to Solomon twice and had commanded him not to worship foreign gods, Solomon did not obey the Lord but turned away from him. So the Lord was angry with Solomon

11 and said to him, "Because you have deliberately broken your covenant with me and disobeyed my commands, I promise that I will take the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your officials.

12 However, for the sake of your father David I will not do this in your lifetime, but during the reign of your son.

13 And I will not take the whole kingdom away from him; instead, I will leave him one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have made my own."

14 So the Lord caused Hadad, of the royal family of Edom, to turn against Solomon.

15 Long before this, when David had conquered Edom, Joab the commander of his army had gone there to bury the dead. He and his men remained in Edom six months, and during that time they killed every male in Edom

17 except Hadad and some of his father's Edomite servants, who escaped to Egypt. (At that time Hadad was just a child.)

18 They left Midian and went to Paran, where some other men joined them. Then they traveled to Egypt and went to the king, who gave Hadad some land and a house and provided him with food.

19 Hadad won the friendship of the king, and the king gave his sister-in-law, the sister of Queen Tahpenes, to Hadad in marriage.

20 She bore him a son, Genubath, who was raised by the queen in the palace, where he lived with the king's sons.

21 When the news reached Hadad in Egypt that David had died and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to the king, "Let me go back to my own country."

22 "Why?" the king asked. "Have I failed to give you something? Is that why you want to go back home?" "Just let me go," Hadad answered the king. And he went back to his country. As king of Edom, Hadad was an evil, bitter enemy of Israel.

23 God also caused Rezon son of Eliada to turn against Solomon. Rezon had fled from his master, King Hadadezer of Zobah,

24 and had become the leader of a gang of outlaws. (This happened after David had defeated Hadadezer and had slaughtered his Syrian allies.) Rezon and his gang went and lived in Damascus, where his followers made him king of Syria.

25 He was an enemy of Israel during the lifetime of Solomon.

26 Another man who turned against King Solomon was one of his officials, Jeroboam son of Nebat, from Zeredah in Ephraim. His mother was a widow named Zeruah.

27 This is the story of the revolt. Solomon was filling in the land on the east side of Jerusalem and repairing the city walls.

28 Jeroboam was an able young man, and when Solomon noticed how hard he worked, he put him in charge of all the forced labor in the territory of the tribes of Manasseh and Ephraim.

29 One day, as Jeroboam was traveling from Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him alone on the road in the open country.

30 Ahijah took off the new robe he was wearing, tore it into twelve pieces,

31 and said to Jeroboam, "Take ten pieces for yourself, because the Lord, the God of Israel, says to you, "I am going to take the kingdom away from Solomon, and I will give you ten tribes.

32 Solomon will keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen to be my own from the whole land of Israel.

33 I am going to do this because Solomon has rejected me and has worshiped foreign gods: Astarte, the goddess of Sidon; Chemosh, the god of Moab; and Molech, the god of Ammon. Solomon has disobeyed me; he has done wrong and has not kept my laws and commands as his father David did.

34 But I will not take the whole kingdom away from Solomon, and I will keep him in power as long as he lives. This I will do for the sake of my servant David, whom I chose and who obeyed my laws and commands.

35 I will take the kingdom away from Solomon's son and will give you ten tribes,

36 but I will let Solomon's son keep one tribe, so that I will always have a descendant of my servant David ruling in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen as the place where I am worshiped.

37 Jeroboam, I will make you king of Israel, and you will rule over all the territory that you want.

38 If you obey me completely, live by my laws, and win my approval by doing what I command, as my servant David did, I will always be with you. I will make you king of Israel and will make sure that your descendants rule after you, just as I have done for David.

39 Because of Solomon's sin I will punish the descendants of David, but not for all time.' "

40 And so Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but he escaped to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until Solomon's death.

41 Everything else that Solomon did, his career, and his wisdom, are all recorded in [The History of Solomon.]

42 He was king in Jerusalem over all Israel for forty years.

43 He died and was buried in David's City, and his son Rehoboam succeeded him as king.
