1 E ROBOAMO andò in Sichem; perciocchè tutto Israele era venuto in Sichem, per costituirlo re.

2 Ora, quando Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, ch’era ancora in Egitto, ove era fuggito d’innanzi al re Salomone, ebbe ciò inteso, egli dimorò ancora in Egitto;

3 ma gl’Israeliti lo mandarono a chiamare. E Geroboamo, e tutta la raunanza d’Israele, vennero, e parlarono a Roboamo, dicendo:

4 Tuo padre ci ha posto addosso un grave giogo; ma tu alleviaci ora dalla dura servitù di tuo padre, e dal suo grave giogo, il quale egli ci ha posto addosso, e noi ti saremo soggetti.

5 Ed egli disse loro: Andatevene fin di qui a tre giorni; poi ritornate a me. E il popolo se ne andò.

6 E il re Roboamo si consigliò co’ vecchi ch’erano stati ministri del re Salomone, suo padre, mentre era in vita; dicendo: Come consigliate che si risponda a questo popolo?

7 Ed essi gli risposero, dicendo: Se oggi tu ti sottometti a questo popolo, e te gli rendi soggetto, e gli dài buona risposta, e buone parole, egli ti sarà soggetto in perpetuo.

8 Ma egli lasciò il consiglio che i vecchi gli aveano dato, e si consigliò co’ giovani, ch’erano stati allevati con lui, ed erano suoi ministri.

9 E disse loro: Che consigliate voi che rispondiamo a questo popolo, che mi ha parlato, dicendo: Alleviaci dal giogo, il qual tuo padre ha posto sopra noi?

10 E i giovani, ch’erano stati allevati con lui, gli risposero, e dissero: Di’ così a questo popolo che t’ha parlato, dicendo: Tuo padre ci ha posto addosso un grave giogo, ma tu alleviacene, e rispondi loro così: Il mio piccol dito è più grosso che i lombi di mio padre.

11 Ora dunque mio padre vi ha caricato addosso un grave giogo, ma io lo farò vie più grave; mio padre vi ha castigati con isferze, ma io vi castigherò con flagelli pungenti.

12 Ora, tre giorni appresso, Geroboamo, con tutto il popolo, venne a Roboamo, secondo che il re avea comandato, dicendo: Ritornate a me di qui a tre dì.

13 E il re rispose aspramente al popolo, e lasciò il consiglio che i vecchi gli aveano dato.

14 E parlò al popolo secondo il consiglio de’ giovani, dicendo: Mio padre vi ha posto addosso un grave giogo, ma io lo farò vie più grave; mio padre vi ha castigati con isferze, ma io vi castigherò con flagelli pungenti.

15 Il re adunque non prestò le orecchie al popolo; perciocchè questo era una occasione procedente dal Signore, per adempier la sua parola, la quale egli avea pronunziata, per Ahia Silonita, a Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat.

16 E tutto il popolo d’Israele, veduto che il re non gli avea prestato orecchio, rispose al re, e disse: Qual parte abbiamo noi in Davide? noi non abbiamo alcuna ragione di eredità nel figliuolo d’Isai; o Israele, vattene alle tue stanze; provvedi ora, Davide, a casa tua. Ed Israele se ne andò alle sue stanze.

17 Ma, quant’è a’ figliuoli d’Israele, che dimoravano nelle città di Giuda, Roboamo regnò sopra loro.

18 E il re Roboamo mandò a tutti gl’Israeliti Adoram, ch’era sopra i tributi; ma essi lo lapidarono, ed egli morì. E il re Roboamo salì prestamente sopra un carro, per fuggirsene in Gerusalemme.

19 Così gl’Israeliti si ribellarono dalla casa di Davide, e son restati così, fino a questo giorno.

20 E, quando tutto Israele ebbe inteso che Geroboamo era ritornato, lo mandarono a chiamare nella raunanza, e lo costituirono re sopra tutto Israele; niuna tribù seguitò la casa di Davide, fuorchè la tribù di Giuda sola.

21 E Roboamo, giunto in Gerusalemme, raunò tutta la casa di Giuda, e la tribù di Beniamino, in numero di centottantamila uomini scelti, atti alla guerra, per guerreggiar con la casa d’Israele, affine di ridurre il regno sotto l’ubbidienza di Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone.

22 Ma la parola di Dio fu indirizzata a Semaia, uomo di Dio, dicendo:

23 Di’ a Roboamo, figliuolo di Salomone, re di Giuda, ed a tutta la casa di Giuda, e di Beniamino, ed al rimanente del popolo:

24 Così ha detto il Signore: Non salite, e non combattete co’ figliuoli d’Israele, vostri fratelli; ritornatevene ciascuno a casa sua; perciocchè questa cosa è proceduta da me. Ed essi ubbidirono alla parola del Signore, e si volsero indietro, e se ne andarono, secondo il comandamento del Signore.

25 OR Geroboamo edificò Sichem, nel monte di Efraim, e vi dimorò; poi uscì di là, ed edificò Penuel.

26 E Geroboamo disse tra sè stesso: Ora ben potrebbe ritornare il regno alla casa di Davide.

27 Se questo popolo sale, per far sacrificii nella Casa del Signore, in Gerusalemme, il cuor suo si rivolgerà a Roboamo, re di Giuda, suo signore, e mi uccideranno, e ritorneranno a Roboamo, re di Giuda.

28 Laonde il re prese consiglio di far due vitelli d’oro; poi disse al popolo: Voi non avete più bisogno di salire in Gerusalemme; ecco, o Israele, i tuoi dii, che ti hanno tratto fuor del paese di Egitto.

29 E ne mise uno in Betel, e l’altro in Dan.

30 E ciò fu cagione di peccato; e il popolo andava fino in Dan davanti all’uno di essi.

31 Fece eziandio delle case d’alti luoghi, e creò de’ sacerdoti, presi di qua e di là d’infra il popolo, i quali non erano de’ figliuoli di Levi.

32 Geroboamo ancora ordinò una festa solenne, al quintodecimo giorno dell’ottavo mese, simile alla festa chi si celebrava in Giuda; ed offeriva offerte sopra un altare. Così fece in Betel, sacrificando a’ vitelli ch’egli avea fatti; e costituì in Betel i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi ch’egli avea creati.

33 Ora al quintodecimo giorno dell’ottavo mese, del qual mese egli era stato l’inventore di suo senno, egli offerse offerte sopra l’altare ch’egli avea fatto in Betel, e celebrò la festa solenne de’ figliuoli d’Israele; ed offerse offerte sopra l’altare, facendovi profumi.

1 Rehoboam went to Shechem, where all the people of northern Israel had gathered to make him king.

2 When Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had gone to Egypt to escape from King Solomon, heard this news, he returned from Egypt.

3 The people of the northern tribes sent for him, and then they all went together to Rehoboam and said to him,

4 "Your father Solomon treated us harshly and placed heavy burdens on us. If you make these burdens lighter and make life easier for us, we will be your loyal subjects."

5 "Come back in three days and I will give you my answer," he replied. So they left.

6 King Rehoboam consulted the older men who had served as his father Solomon's advisers. "What answer do you advise me to give these people?" he asked.

7 They replied, "If you want to serve this people well, give a favorable answer to their request, and they will always serve you loyally."

8 But he ignored the advice of the older men and went instead to the young men who had grown up with him and who were now his advisers.

9 "What do you advise me to do?" he asked. "What shall I say to the people who are asking me to make their burdens lighter?"

10 They replied, "This is what you should tell them: "My little finger is thicker than my father's waist!'

11 Tell them, "My father placed heavy burdens on you; I will make them even heavier. He beat you with whips; I'll flog you with bullwhips!' "

12 Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to King Rehoboam, as he had instructed them.

13 The king ignored the advice of the older men and spoke harshly to the people,

14 as the younger men had advised. He said, "My father placed heavy burdens on you; I will make them even heavier. He beat you with whips; I'll flog you with bullwhips!"

15 It was the will of the Lord to bring about what he had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh. This is why the king did not pay any attention to the people.

16 When the people saw that the king would not listen to them, they shouted, "Down with David and his family! What have they ever done for us? People of Israel, let's go home! Let Rehoboam look out for himself!" So the people of Israel rebelled,

17 leaving Rehoboam as king only of the people who lived in the territory of Judah.

18 Then King Rehoboam sent Adoniram, who was in charge of the forced labor, to go to the Israelites, but they stoned him to death. At this, Rehoboam hurriedly got in his chariot and escaped to Jerusalem.

19 Ever since that time the people of the northern kingdom of Israel have been in rebellion against the dynasty of David.

20 When the people of Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned from Egypt, they invited him to a meeting of the people and made him king of Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to David's descendants.

21 When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he called together 180,000 of the best soldiers from the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. He intended to go to war and restore his control over the northern tribes of Israel.

22 But God told the prophet Shemaiah

23 to give this message to Rehoboam and to all the people of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin:

24 "Do not attack your own relatives, the people of Israel. Go home, all of you. What has happened is my will." They all obeyed the Lord's command and went back home.

25 King Jeroboam of Israel fortified the town of Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there for a while. Then he left and fortified the town of Penuel.

26 He said to himself, "As things are now, if my people go to Jerusalem and offer sacrifices to the Lord in the Temple there, they will transfer their allegiance to King Rehoboam of Judah and will kill me."

28 After thinking it over, he made two bull-calves of gold and said to his people, "You have been going long enough to Jerusalem to worship. People of Israel, here are your gods who brought you out of Egypt!"

29 He placed one of the gold bull-calves in Bethel and the other in Dan.

30 And so the people sinned, going to worship in Bethel and in Dan.

31 Jeroboam also built places of worship on hilltops, and he chose priests from families who were not of the tribe of Levi.

32 Jeroboam also instituted a religious festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival in Judah. On the altar in Bethel he offered sacrifices to the gold bull-calves he had made, and he placed there in Bethel the priests serving at the places of worship he had built.

33 And on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the day that he himself had set, he went to Bethel and offered a sacrifice on the altar in celebration of the festival he had instituted for the people of Israel.
