1 ED ecco, un uomo di Dio venne di Giuda in Betel, con la parola del Signore, come Geroboamo stava in piè presso all’altare, per farvi profumi.

2 E gridò contro all’altare, per la parola del Signore, e disse: Altare, altare, così ha detto il Signore: Ecco, egli nascerà un figliuolo alla casa di Davide, il cui nome sarà Giosia, il qual sacrificherà sopra te i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi, che fanno profumi sopra te; e si arderanno sopra te ossami d’uomini.

3 E quello stesso giorno diede un segno, dicendo: Questo è il segno, che il Signore ha parlato: Ecco, l’altare di presente si schianterà, e la cenere che è sopra esso sarà sparsa.

4 E quando il re Geroboamo ebbe udita la parola dell’uomo di Dio, la quale egli avea ad alta voce pronunziata contro all’altare di Betel, distese la sua mano disopra all’altare dicendo: Prendetelo. Ma la mano, ch’egli avea distesa contro al profeta, gli si seccò, ed egli non potè ritrarla a sè.

5 L’altare eziandio si schiantò, e la cenere fu sparsa d’in su l’altare, secondo il segno che l’uomo di Dio avea dato per la parola del Signore.

6 E il re fece motto all’uomo di Dio, e gli disse: Deh! supplica al Signore Iddio tuo, e fa’ orazione per me, che la mia mano mi sia restituita. E l’uomo di Dio supplicò al Signore, e la mano del re gli fu restituita, e divenne come prima.

7 E il re disse all’uomo di Dio: Vientene meco in casa, e ristorati con cibo, ed io ti donerò un presente.

8 Ma l’uomo di Dio disse al re: Avvegnachè tu mi dessi la metà della tua casa, io non andrei teco, e non mangerei pane, nè berrei acqua in questo luogo;

9 perciocchè così mi è stato comandato per la parola del Signore, dicendo: Non mangiar pane, e non bere acqua in quel luogo; e non ritornartene per la medesima via, per la quale tu sarai andato.

10 Così egli se ne andò per un’altra via, e non se ne ritornò per la medesima via, per la quale era venuto in Betel.

11 ORA in Betel abitava un profeta vecchio, il cui figliuolo venne, e gli raccontò tutte le opere che l’uomo di Dio avea in quel dì fatte in Betel, e le parole ch’egli avea dette al re; i figliuoli di esso le raccontarono al lor padre.

12 Ed egli disse loro: Per qual via se n’è egli andato? E i suoi figliuoli videro la via, per la quale se n’era andato l’uomo di Dio, ch’era venuto di Giuda.

13 Ed egli disse a’ suoi figliuoli: Sellatemi l’asino. Ed essi gli sellarono l’asino; ed egli vi montò su;

14 e andò dietro all’uomo di Dio, e lo trovò a sedere sotto una quercia, e gli disse: Sei tu l’uomo di Dio che sei venuto di Giuda? Ed egli disse: Sì, lo sono.

15 Ed egli gli disse: Vientene meco in casa mia e prendi cibo.

16 Ma egli disse: Io non posso ritornare indietro, nè venir teco; e non mangerò pane, nè berrò acqua teco, in questo luogo.

17 Perciocchè così mi è stato detto per la parola del Signore: Non mangiar pane, nè bere acqua, in quel luogo; e quando tu te ne andrai, non ritornar per la via, per la quale tu sarai andato.

18 E colui gli disse: Anch’io son profeta, come tu; ed un Angelo mi ha parlato per la parola del Signore, dicendo: Rimenalo teco in casa tua, acciocchè mangi del pane, e beva dell’acqua. Ma egli gli mentiva.

19 Egli adunque se ne ritornò con lui, e mangiò del pane in casa sua, e bevve dell’acqua.

20 Ora, mentre sedevano a tavola, la parola del Signore fu indirizzata al profeta che l’avea fatto ritornare;

21 ed egli gridò all’uomo di Dio ch’era venuto di Giuda, dicendo: Così ha detto il Signore: Perciocchè tu sei stato ribello alla parola del Signore, e non hai osservato il comandamento che il Signore Iddio tuo ti avea fatto;

22 anzi sei ritornato, ed hai mangiato del pane, e bevuto dell’acqua, nel luogo del quale egli ti avea detto: Non mangiarvi pane, nè bervi acqua; il tuo corpo non entrerà nella sepoltura de’ tuoi padri.

23 E dopo che il profeta ch’egli avea fatto ritornare, ebbe mangiato del pane, ed ebbe bevuto, egli gli fece sellar l’asino.

24 Ed egli se ne andò, ed un leone lo scontrò per la strada, e l’uccise; e il suo corpo morto giaceva in su la strada, e l’asino se ne stava in piè presso di quel corpo morto, e il leone parimente.

25 Or ecco, certi passanti videro quel corpo morto, che giaceva in su la via, e il leone che gli stava appresso, e vennero, e rapportarono la cosa nella città, nella quale il vecchio profeta abitava.

26 E come il profeta, che l’avea fatto ritornar dal suo cammino, ebbe ciò udito, disse: Egli è l’uomo di Dio, il quale è stato ribello alla parola del Signore; perciò, il Signore l’ha dato al leone, che l’ha lacerato ed ucciso, secondo la parola del Signore ch’egli gli avea detta.

27 Poi parlò a’ suoi figliuoli, dicendo: Sellatemi l’asino. Ed essi gliel sellarono.

28 Ed egli andò, e trovò il corpo morto di colui che giaceva in su la via, e l’asino, e il leone, che stavano in piè presso del corpo morto; il leone non avea divorato il corpo, nè lacerato l’asino.

29 E il profeta levò il corpo dell’uomo di Dio, e lo pose in su l’asino, e lo riportò indietro. E quel profeta vecchio se ne venne nella sua città, per farne cordoglio, e per seppellirlo.

30 E pose il corpo di esso nella sua sepoltura; ed egli e i suoi figliuoli fecero cordoglio di lui, dicendo: Ahi! fratel mio.

31 E dopo che l’ebbe seppellito, disse a’ suoi figliuoli: Quando io sarò morto, seppellitemi nel sepolcro, nel quale l’uomo di Dio è seppellito; mettete le mie ossa presso delle sue ossa.

32 Perchè ciò ch’egli ha gridato, per la parola del Signore, contro all’altare ch’è in Betel, e contr’a tutte le case degli alti luoghi che son nelle città di Samaria, avverrà per certo.

33 Dopo questo fatto, Geroboamo non si rivolse però dalla sua cattiva via; anzi di nuovo fece de’ sacerdoti degli alti luoghi, presi di qua e di là d’infra il popolo; chi voleva si consacrava, ed era dei sacerdoti degli alti luoghi.

34 E Geroboamo fu, in questo, cagion di peccato alla sua casa, fin per essere spenta, e distrutta d’in su la terra.

1 At the Lord's command a prophet from Judah went to Bethel and arrived there as Jeroboam stood at the altar to offer the sacrifice.

2 Following the Lord's command, the prophet denounced the altar: "O altar, altar, this is what the Lord says: A child, whose name will be Josiah, will be born to the family of David. He will slaughter on you the priests serving at the pagan altars who offer sacrifices on you, and he will burn human bones on you."

3 And the prophet went on to say, "This altar will fall apart, and the ashes on it will be scattered. Then you will know that the Lord has spoken through me."

4 When King Jeroboam heard this, he pointed at him and ordered, "Seize that man!" At once the king's arm became paralyzed so that he couldn't pull it back.

5 The altar suddenly fell apart and the ashes spilled to the ground, as the prophet had predicted in the name of the Lord.

6 King Jeroboam said to the prophet, "Please pray for me to the Lord your God, and ask him to heal my arm!" The prophet prayed to the Lord, and the king's arm was healed.

7 Then the king said to the prophet, "Come home with me and have something to eat. I will reward you for what you have done."

8 The prophet answered, "Even if you gave me half of your wealth, I would not go with you or eat or drink anything with you.

9 The Lord has commanded me not to eat or drink a thing, and not to return home the same way I came."

10 So he did not go back the same way he had come, but by another road.

11 At that time there was an old prophet living in Bethel. His sons came and told him what the prophet from Judah had done in Bethel that day and what he had said to King Jeroboam.

12 "Which way did he go when he left?" the old prophet asked them. They showed him the road

13 and he told them to saddle his donkey for him. They did so, and he rode off

14 down the road after the prophet from Judah and found him sitting under an oak tree. "Are you the prophet from Judah?" he asked. "I am," the man answered.

15 "Come home and have a meal with me," he said.

16 But the prophet from Judah answered, "I can't go home with you or accept your hospitality. And I won't eat or drink anything with you here,

17 because the Lord has commanded me not to eat or drink a thing, and not to return home the same way I came."

18 Then the old prophet from Bethel said to him, "I, too, am a prophet just like you, and at the Lord's command an angel told me to take you home with me and offer you my hospitality." But the old prophet was lying.

19 So the prophet from Judah went home with the old prophet and had a meal with him.

20 As they were sitting at the table, the word of the Lord came to the old prophet,

21 and he cried out to the prophet from Judah, "The Lord says that you disobeyed him and did not do what he commanded.

22 Instead, you returned and ate a meal in a place he had ordered you not to eat in. Because of this you will be killed, and your body will not be buried in your family grave."

23 After they had finished eating, the old prophet saddled the donkey for the prophet from Judah,

24 who rode off. On the way a lion met him and killed him. His body lay on the road, and the donkey and the lion stood beside it.

25 Some men passed by and saw the body on the road, with the lion standing near by. They went on into Bethel and reported what they had seen.

26 When the old prophet heard about it, he said, "That is the prophet who disobeyed the Lord's command! And so the Lord sent the lion to attack and kill him, just as the Lord said he would."

27 Then he said to his sons, "Saddle my donkey for me." They did so,

28 and he rode off and found the prophet's body lying on the road, with the donkey and the lion still standing by it. The lion had not eaten the body or attacked the donkey.

29 The old prophet picked up the body, put it on the donkey, and brought it back to Bethel to mourn over it and bury it.

30 He buried it in his own family grave, and he and his sons mourned over it, saying, "Oh my brother, my brother!"

31 After the burial the prophet said to his sons, "When I die, bury me in this grave and lay my body next to his.

32 The words that he spoke at the Lord's command against the altar in Bethel and against all the places of worship in the towns of Samaria will surely come true."

33 King Jeroboam of Israel still did not turn from his evil ways but continued to choose priests from ordinary families to serve at the altars he had built. He ordained as priest anyone who wanted to be one.

34 This sin on his part brought about the ruin and total destruction of his dynasty.
