1 ORA, avvicinandosi il tempo della morte di Davide, egli comandò al suo figliuolo Salomone, e gli disse:

2 Io me ne vo per la via di tutta la terra; fortificati, e portati da uomo;

3 e osserva ciò che il Signore Iddio tuo ti ha comandato di osservare; camminando nelle sue vie, ed osservando i suoi statuti, e i suoi comandamenti, e le sue leggi, e le sue testimonianze, siccome è scritto nella Legge di Mosè; acciocchè tu prosperi in tutto quello che tu farai, e in tutto ciò a che tu ti volterai;

4 affinchè il Signore adempia ciò ch’egli mi ha promesso, dicendo: Se i tuoi figliuoli prendono guardia alla via loro, per camminar con lealtà nel mio cospetto, con tutto il cuor loro, e con tutta l’anima loro; non ti verrà giammai meno uomo che segga sopra il trono d’Israele.

5 Oltre a ciò, tu sai quello che mi ha fatto Ioab, figliuolo di Seruia; ciò che egli ha fatto a’ due capi degli eserciti d’Israele, ad Abner, figliuolo di Ner, e ad Amasa, figliuolo di Ieter, i quali egli ha uccisi, spandendo in pace il sangue che si spande in guerra, e mettendo il sangue, che si spande in guerra, nella sua cintura ch’egli avea sopra le reni, e nelle sue scarpe ch’egli avea ne’ piedi.

6 Fanne adunque secondo la tua sapienza, e non lasciare scendere la sua canutezza in pace nel sepolcro.

7 Ma usa benignità inverso i figliuoli di Barzillai Galaadita, e sieno fra quelli che mangeranno alla tua tavola; perciocchè così vennero a me, quando io fuggiva d’innanzi ad Absalom, tuo fratello.

8 Ecco, oltre a ciò, appo te è Simi, figliuolo di Ghera, Beniaminita, da Bahurim, il qual mi maledisse d’una maledizione atroce nel giorno che io andava in Mahanaim. Ma egli mi scese incontro verso il Giordano, ed io gli giurai per lo Signore, che io non lo farei morire con la spada.

9 Ma ora non lasciarlo impunito; perciocchè tu sei uomo savio; considera dunque ciò che tu gli avrai da fare, e fa’ scendere la sua canutezza nel sepolcro per morte sanguinosa.

10 Davide poi giacque co’ suoi padri, e fu seppellito nella Città di Davide.

11 E il tempo che Davide regnò sopra Israele, fu di quarant’anni; egli regnò sette anni in Hebron, e in Gerusalemme regnò trentatrè anni.

12 E Salomone sedette sopra il trono di Davide, suo padre; e il suo reame fu grandemente stabilito.

13 OR Adonia, figliuolo di Hagghit, venne a Batseba, madre di Salomone. Ed ella disse: La tua venuta è ella pacifica? Ed egli disse: Sì, è pacifica.

14 Poi disse: Io ho da dirti una parola.

15 Ed ella disse: Parla. Ed egli disse: Tu sai che il regno mi apparteneva, e tutti gl’Israeliti aveano affissate le facce loro sopra me, sperando che io regnerei; ma il reame è stato trasportato, ed è scaduto al mio fratello; perciocchè esso è stato fatto suo dal Signore.

16 Ma ora io ti chieggio sol una cosa, non disdirmela. Ed ella gli disse: Parla pure.

17 Ed egli le disse: Deh! di’ al re Salomone, perciocchè egli non te lo disdirà, ch’egli mi dia Abisag Sunamita per moglie.

18 E Batseba disse: Bene sta, io parlerò per te al re.

19 Batseba dunque venne al re Salomone, per parlargli per Adonia. E il re si levò a incontrarla, e le s’inchinò. Poi si pose a sedere sopra il suo trono, e fece mettere un seggio per sua madre; ed ella si pose a sedere alla man destra di esso.

20 Ed ella disse: Io ho da farti una piccola richiesta, non disdirmela. E il re le disse: Falla pure, madre mia; perciocchè io non te la disdirò.

21 Ed ella disse: Diasi Abisag Sunamita al tuo fratello Adonia per moglie.

22 E il re Salomone rispose, e disse a sua madre: E perchè chiedi tu Abisag Sunamita per Adonia? Chiedi pure anche il reame per lui, poichè egli è mio fratello maggiore; per lui, per lo sacerdote Ebiatar, e per Ioab, figliuolo di Seruia.

23 Ed il re Salomone giurò per lo Signore, dicendo: Così mi faccia Iddio, e così aggiunga, se Adonia non ha parlato di questa cosa contro alla vita sua.

24 Ed ora come vive il Signore, il qual mi ha stabilito, e mi ha fatto sedere sopra il trono di Davide, mio padre; e mi ha fatta una casa, come egli ne avea parlato; Adonia sarà oggi fatto morire.

25 E il re Salomone mandò a farne l’esecuzione per le mani di Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, il quale si avventò sopra lui; ed egli morì.

26 Poi il re disse al sacerdote Ebiatar: Vattene in Anatot, alla tua possessione; perciocchè tu hai meritata la morte; ma pure oggi non ti farò morire; perchè tu hai portata l’Arca del Signore Iddio davanti a Davide, mio padre, e perchè tu sei stato afflitto in tutto ciò in che mio padre è stato afflitto.

27 Così Salomone depose Ebiatar, per non esser più sacerdote al Signore; per adempiere la parola del Signore, la quale egli avea detta contro alla casa di Eli, in Silo.

28 Ora il grido ne venne fino a Ioab; perciocchè Ioab si era rivolto dietro ad Adonia, benchè non si fosse rivolto dietro ad Absalom. Ed egli si rifuggì nel Tabernacolo del Signore, e impugnò le corna dell’Altare.

29 E fu rapportato al re Salomone che Ioab si era rifuggito al Tabernacolo del Signore, e ch’egli era appresso dell’Altare. E Salomone mandò Benaia, figliuolo di Ioaida, dicendo: Va’, avventati sopra lui.

30 E Benaia entrò nel Tabernacolo del Signore, e disse a Ioab: Così ha detto il re: Esci fuori. Ma egli rispose: No; anzi morrò quì. E Benaia rapportò la cosa al re, dicendo: Così ha detto Ioab, e così mi ha risposto.

31 E il re gli disse: Fa’ come egli ha detto, ed avventati sopra lui; e poi sotterralo; e togli d’addosso a me, e d’addosso alla casa di mio padre, il sangue che Ioab ha sparso senza cagione.

32 E il Signore farà ritornare sopra il suo capo il sangue ch’egli ha sparso; perciocchè egli si è avventato sopra due uomini più giusti e migliori di lui, e li ha uccisi con la spada, senza che Davide, mio padre, ne sapesse nulla, cioè: Abner, figliuolo di Ner, capo dell’esercito d’Israele, ed Amasa, figliuolo di Ieter, capo dell’esercito di Giuda.

33 Ritorni adunque il sangue di coloro in sul capo di Ioab, e in sul capo della sua progenie in perpetuo; ma siavi pace, da parte del Signore, a Davide, ed alla sua progenie, ed alla sua casa, ed al suo trono, in perpetuo.

34 Così Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, salì, e si avventò sopra lui, e lo fece morire. Poi fu seppellito nella sua casa nel deserto.

35 Ed il re costituì Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, sopra l’esercito, in luogo di esso. Il re ordinò eziandio il sacerdote Sadoc, in luogo di Ebiatar.

36 Poi il re mandò a chiamare Simi, e gli disse: Edificati una casa in Gerusalemme, e dimoravi, e non uscirne nè qua, nè là.

37 Perciocchè al giorno che tu ne sarai uscito, e sarai passato il torrente di Chidron, sappi pur che del tutto tu morrai; il tuo sangue sarà sopra la tua testa.

38 E Simi disse al re: La parola è buona; il tuo servitore farà come il re, mio signore, ha detto. E Simi stette in Gerusalemme un lungo spazio di tempo.

39 Ed in capo di tre anni, avvenne che due servi di Simi se ne fuggirono ad Achis, figliuolo di Maaca, re di Gat. E ciò fu rapportato a Simi, e gli fu detto: Ecco, i tuoi servi sono in Gat.

40 E Simi si levò, e sellò il suo asino, e andò in Gat, ad Achis, per cercare i suoi servi; e andò, e ricondusse i suoi servi da Gat.

41 E fu rapportato a Salomone che Simi era andato da Gerusalemme in Gat, ed era ritornato.

42 E il re mandò a chiamar Simi, e gli disse: Non ti avea io fatto giurare per lo Signore, e non ti avea io protestato, dicendo: Al giorno che tu uscirai, e andrai o qua o là, sappi pur che del tutto tu morrai? E tu mi dicesti: La parola che io ho udita è buona.

43 Perchè dunque non hai osservato il giuramento del Signore, e il comandamento che io ti avea fatto?

44 Il re, oltre a ciò, disse a Simi: Tu sai tutto il male che tu hai fatto a Davide, mio padre, del quale il tuo cuore è consapevole; e per ciò il Signore ha fatto ritornare in sul tuo capo il male che tu hai fatto.

45 Ma il re Salomone sarà benedetto, e il trono di Davide sarà stabile davanti al Signore in perpetuo.

46 E, per comandamento del re, Benaia, figliuolo di Ioiada, uscì, e si avventò sopra lui, ed egli morì. Ed il reame fu stabilito nelle mani di Salomone.

1 When David was about to die, he called his son Solomon and gave him his last instructions:

2 "My time to die has come. Be confident and determined,

3 and do what the Lord your God orders you to do. Obey all his laws and commands, as written in the Law of Moses, so that wherever you go you may prosper in everything you do.

4 If you obey him, the Lord will keep the promise he made when he told me that my descendants would rule Israel as long as they were careful to obey his commands faithfully with all their heart and soul.

5 "There is something else. You remember what Joab did to me by killing the two commanders of Israel's armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. You remember how he murdered them in time of peace as revenge for deaths they had caused in time of war. He killed innocent men, and now I bear the responsibility for what he did, and I suffer the consequences.

6 You know what to do; you must not let him die a natural death.

7 "But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai from Gilead and take care of them, because they were kind to me when I was fleeing from your brother Absalom.

8 "There is also Shimei son of Gera, from the town of Bahurim in Benjamin. He cursed me bitterly the day I went to Mahanaim, but when he met me at the Jordan River, I gave him my solemn promise in the name of the Lord that I would not have him killed.

9 But you must not let him go unpunished. You know what to do, and you must see to it that he is put to death."

10 David died and was buried in David's City.

11 He had been king of Israel for forty years, ruling seven years in Hebron and thirty-three years in Jerusalem.

12 Solomon succeeded his father David as king, and his royal power was firmly established.

13 Then Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, went to Bathsheba, who was Solomon's mother. "Is this a friendly visit?" she asked. "It is," he answered,

14 and then he added, "I have something to ask of you." "What is it?" she asked.

15 He answered, "You know that I should have become king and that everyone in Israel expected it. But it happened differently, and my brother became king because it was the Lord's will.

16 And now I have one request to make; please do not refuse me." "What is it?" Bathsheba asked.

17 He answered, "Please ask King Solomon - I know he won't refuse you - to let me have Abishag, the young woman from Shunem, as my wife."

18 "Very well," she answered. "I will speak to the king for you."

19 So Bathsheba went to the king to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king stood up to greet his mother and bowed to her. Then he sat on his throne and had another one brought in on which she sat at his right.

20 She said, "I have a small favor to ask of you; please do not refuse me." "What is it, mother?" he asked. "I will not refuse you."

21 She answered, "Let your brother Adonijah have Abishag as his wife."

22 "Why do you ask me to give Abishag to him?" the king asked. "You might as well ask me to give him the throne too. After all, he is my older brother, and Abiathar the priest and Joab are on his side!"

23 Then Solomon made a solemn promise in the Lord's name, "May God strike me dead if I don't make Adonijah pay with his life for asking this!

24 The Lord has firmly established me on the throne of my father David; he has kept his promise and given the kingdom to me and my descendants. I swear by the living Lord that Adonijah will die this very day!"

25 So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah, who went out and killed Adonijah.

26 Then King Solomon said to Abiathar the priest, "Go to your country home in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not have you put to death now, for you were in charge of the Lord's Covenant Box while you were with my father David, and you shared in all his troubles."

27 Then Solomon dismissed Abiathar from serving as a priest of the Lord, and so made come true what the Lord had said in Shiloh about the priest Eli and his descendants.

28 Joab heard what had happened. (He had supported Adonijah, but not Absalom.) So he fled to the Tent of the Lord's presence and took hold of the corners of the altar.

29 When the news reached King Solomon that Joab had fled to the Tent and was by the altar, Solomon sent a messenger to Joab to ask him why he had fled to the altar. Joab answered that he had fled to the Lord because he was afraid of Solomon. So King Solomon sent Benaiah to kill Joab.

30 He went to the Tent of the Lord's presence and said to Joab, "The king orders you to come out." "No," Joab answered. "I will die here." Benaiah went back to the king and told him what Joab had said.

31 "Do what Joab says," Solomon answered. "Kill him and bury him. Then neither I nor any other of David's descendants will any longer be held responsible for what Joab did when he killed innocent men.

32 The Lord will punish Joab for those murders, which he committed without my father David's knowledge. Joab killed two innocent men who were better men than he: Abner, commander of the army of Israel, and Amasa, commander of the army of Judah.

33 The punishment for their murders will fall on Joab and on his descendants forever. But the Lord will always give success to David's descendants who sit on his throne."

34 So Benaiah went to the Tent of the Lord's presence and killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the open country.

35 The king made Benaiah commander of the army in Joab's place and put Zadok the priest in Abiathar's place.

36 Then the king sent for Shimei and said to him, "Build a house for yourself here in Jerusalem. Live in it and don't leave the city.

37 If you ever leave and go beyond Kidron Brook, you will certainly die - and you yourself will be to blame."

38 "Very well, Your Majesty," Shimei answered. "I will do what you say." So he lived in Jerusalem a long time.

39 Three years later, however, two of Shimei's slaves ran away to the king of Gath, Achish son of Maacah. When Shimei heard that they were in Gath,

40 he saddled his donkey and went to King Achish in Gath, to find his slaves. He found them and brought them back home.

41 When Solomon heard what Shimei had done,

42 he sent for him and said, "I made you promise in the Lord's name not to leave Jerusalem. And I warned you that if you ever did, you would certainly die. Did you not agree to it and say that you would obey me?

43 Why, then, have you broken your promise and disobeyed my command?

44 You know very well all the wrong that you did to my father David. The Lord will punish you for it.

45 But he will bless me, and he will make David's kingdom secure forever."

46 Then the king gave orders to Benaiah, who went out and killed Shimei. Solomon was now in complete control.
