1 OR Salomone s’imparentò con Faraone, re di Egitto; e prese la figliuola di Faraone, e la menò nella Città di Davide, finchè avesse compiuto di edificare la sua casa, e la Casa del Signore, e le mura di Gerusalemme d’ogn’intorno.

2 Solo il popolo sacrificava sopra gli alti luoghi; perciocchè fino a que’ dì non era stata edificata Casa al Nome del Signore.

3 Ma pur Salomone amò il Signore, camminando negli statuti di Davide, suo padre; solo sacrificava, e faceva profumi sopra gli alti luoghi.

4 IL re andò eziandio in Gabaon, per sacrificar quivi; perciocchè quello era il grande alto luogo. Salomone offerse mille olocausti sopra quell’Altare.

5 E il Signore apparve a Salomone, in Gabaon, di notte, in sogno. E Iddio gli disse: Chiedi ciò che tu vuoi che io ti dia.

6 E Salomone disse: Tu hai usata gran benignità inverso Davide, mio padre, tuo servitore, siccome egli è camminato davanti a te in lealtà, ed in giustizia, e in dirittura di cuore verso te; e tu gli hai ancora riserbata questa gran benignità, che tu gli hai dato un figliuolo che siede sopra il suo trono, come oggi appare.

7 Ora dunque, Signore Iddio mio, tu hai costituito re me, tuo servitore, in luogo di Davide, mio padre; ed io sono un piccol fanciullo, e non so nè uscire nè entrare.

8 E il tuo servitore è in mezzo del tuo popolo che tu hai eletto, ch’è un popolo grande, il quale, per la moltitudine, non si può contare, nè annoverare.

9 Da’ dunque al tuo servitore un cuore intendente, per giudicare il tuo popolo, per discernere tra il bene ed il male; perciocchè, chi potrebbe giudicare questo tuo popolo ch’è in così gran numero?

10 E questo piacque al Signore, che Salomone avesse chiesta una tal cosa.

11 E Iddio gli disse: Perciocchè tu hai chiesta questa cosa, e non hai chiesta lunga vita, nè ricchezze, nè la vita de’ tuoi nemici; anzi hai chiesto di avere intelletto per essere intendente a giudicare; ecco, io fo secondo la tua parola;

12 ecco, io ti do un cuor savio ed intendente; talchè nè davanti a te è stato, nè dopo te sorgerà alcuno pari a te.

13 Ed oltre a ciò, io ti do quello che tu non mi hai chiesto, ricchezze e gloria; talchè fra i re non ne fu mai alcun tale, qual tu sarai tutto il tempo della tua vita.

14 E se tu cammini nelle mie vie, per osservare i miei statuti ed i miei comandamenti, come è camminato Davide, tuo padre, io prolungherò il tempo della tua vita.

15 E Salomone si svegliò, ed ecco un sogno. Poi se ne venne in Gerusalemme, e si presentò davanti all’Arca del Patto del Signore, ed offerse olocausti, e sacrificò sacrificii da render grazie; fece eziandio un convito a tutti i suoi servitori.

16 Allora due donne meretrici vennero al re, e si presentarono davanti a lui.

17 E l’una di loro disse: Ahi, signor mio! Io, e questa donna, dimoriamo in una stessa casa; or io partorii, stando con lei in quella casa.

18 E il terzo giorno appresso che io ebbi partorito, questa donna partorì anch’essa; e noi stavamo insieme, e non vi era alcun forestiere con noi in casa; non vi era altri che noi due in casa.

19 Ora, la notte passata, il figliuolo di questa donna è morto; perciocchè ella gli era giaciuta addosso.

20 Ed ella s’è levata in mezzo alla notte, ed ha preso il mio figliuolo d’appresso a me, mentre la tua servente dormiva, e se l’ha posto a giacere in seno, e mi ha posto a giacere in seno il suo figliuolo morto.

21 Ora io, levatami la mattina per allattare il mio figliuolo, ho trovato ch’era morto; ma, avendolo la mattina considerato, ecco, egli non era il mio figliuolo che io avea partorito.

22 E l’altra donna disse: No; anzi il vivo è il mio figliuolo, e il morto è il tuo. E quell’altra diceva: No; anzi il morto è il tuo figliuolo, e il vivo è il mio figliuolo. Così parlavano in presenza del re.

23 E il re disse: Costei dice: Questo che è vivo è il mio figliuolo, e il morto è il tuo; e colei dice: No; anzi il morto è il tuo figliuolo, e il vivo è il mio.

24 Allora il re disse: Recatemi una spada. E fu portata una spada davanti al re.

25 Poi il re disse: Spartite il fanciullo vivo in due: e datene la metà all’una, e la metà all’altra.

26 Ma la donna di cui era il fanciullo vivo, disse al re perciocchè le viscere le si commossero inverso il suo figliuolo: Ahi! signor mio; datele il fanciullo vivo, e nol fate punto morire. Ma l’altra disse: Non sia nè a te, nè a me, spartasi.

27 Allora il re diede la sentenza, e disse: Date a costei il fanciullo vivo, e nol fate punto morire; essa è la madre sua.

28 E tutti gl’Israeliti, udito il giudicio che il re avea dato, temettero il re; perciocchè videro che vi era in lui una sapienza di Dio, per giudicare.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Solomon made an alliance with the king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. He brought her to live in David's City until he had finished building his palace, the Temple, and the wall around Jerusalem.

2 A temple had not yet been built for the Lord, and so the people were still offering sacrifices at many different altars.

3 Solomon loved the Lord and followed the instructions of his father David, but he also slaughtered animals and offered them as sacrifices on various altars.

4 On one occasion he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices because that was where the most famous altar was. He had offered hundreds of burnt offerings there in the past.

5 That night the Lord appeared to him in a dream and asked him, "What would you like me to give you?"

6 Solomon answered, "You always showed great love for my father David, your servant, and he was good, loyal, and honest in his relation with you. And you have continued to show him your great and constant love by giving him a son who today rules in his place.

7 O Lord God, you have let me succeed my father as king, even though I am very young and don't know how to rule.

8 Here I am among the people you have chosen to be your own, a people who are so many that they cannot be counted.

9 So give me the wisdom I need to rule your people with justice and to know the difference between good and evil. Otherwise, how would I ever be able to rule this great people of yours?"

10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this,

11 and so he said to him, "Because you have asked for the wisdom to rule justly, instead of long life for yourself or riches or the death of your enemies,

12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you more wisdom and understanding than anyone has ever had before or will ever have again.

13 I will also give you what you have not asked for: all your life you will have wealth and honor, more than that of any other king.

14 And if you obey me and keep my laws and commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life."

15 Solomon woke up and realized that God had spoken to him in the dream. Then he went to Jerusalem and stood in front of the Lord's Covenant Box and offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord. After that he gave a feast for all his officials.

16 One day two prostitutes came and presented themselves before King Solomon.

17 One of them said, "Your Majesty, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a baby boy at home while she was there.

18 Two days after my child was born, she also gave birth to a baby boy. Only the two of us were there in the house - no one else was present.

19 Then one night she accidentally rolled over on her baby and smothered it.

20 She got up during the night, took my son from my side while I was asleep, and carried him to her bed; then she put the dead child in my bed.

21 The next morning, when I woke up and was going to nurse my baby, I saw that it was dead. I looked at it more closely and saw that it was not my child."

22 But the other woman said, "No! The living child is mine, and the dead one is yours!" The first woman answered back, "No! The dead child is yours, and the living one is mine!" And so they argued before the king.

23 Then King Solomon said, "Each of you claims that the living child is hers and that the dead child belongs to the other one."

24 He sent for a sword, and when it was brought,

25 he said, "Cut the living child in two and give each woman half of it."

26 The real mother, her heart full of love for her son, said to the king, "Please, Your Majesty, don't kill the child! Give it to her!" But the other woman said, "Don't give it to either of us; go on and cut it in two."

27 Then Solomon said, "Don't kill the child! Give it to the first woman - she is its real mother."

28 When the people of Israel heard of Solomon's decision, they were all filled with deep respect for him, because they knew then that God had given him the wisdom to settle disputes fairly.
