1 ORA, quattrocentottanta anni da che i figliuoli d’Israele furono usciti del paese di Egitto, l’anno quarto del regno di Salomone sopra Israele, nel mese di Ziv, che è il secondo mese, egli cominciò ad edificar la Casa al Signore.

2 E la Casa che il re Salomone edificò al Signore, avea sessanta cubiti di lunghezza, e venti di larghezza, e trenta di altezza.

3 E vi era un portico davanti alla parte della Casa, che si chiamava il Tempio, il quale avea venti cubiti di lunghezza, al pari della larghezza della Casa; e dieci cubiti di larghezza in fronte della Casa.

4 Fece eziandio alla Casa delle finestre reticolate.

5 Edificò ancora de’ palchi di camere, attenenti al muro della Casa d’ogn’intorno; d’intorno alle mura della Casa, così del luogo detto il Tempio, come dell’altro detto l’Oracolo; avendovi fatto d’ogn’intorno de’ contrafforti.

6 La larghezza del palco da basso era di cinque cubiti, e la larghezza di quel di mezzo di sei, e la larghezza del terzo di sette; perciocchè egli fece delle ritratte alla Casa, di fuori; acciocchè que’ palchi non entrassero dentro alle mura della Casa.

7 Ora, quando la Casa fu edificata, ella fu fabbricata di pietre ch’erano state condotte acconce in perfezione come aveano da essere; talchè nè martello, nè scure, nè alcun altro strumento di ferro, non fu sentito nella Casa, mentre si edificava.

8 La porta de’ contrafforti, ch’erano in mezzo fra que’ palchi, era al lato destro della Casa; e per iscale a lumaca si saliva al palco di mezzo, e di quello al terzo.

9 Egli adunque edificò la Casa, e la compiè; e la coperse di soffitti, e di riquadrature di cedro.

10 E fabbricò quei palchi di camere d’intorno a tutta la Casa, dell’altezza di cinque cubiti ciascuno; intavolò eziandio la Casa di legno di cedro.

11 E la parola del Signore fu indirizzata a Salomone, dicendo:

12 Quant’è a questa Casa che tu edifichi, se tu cammini ne’ miei statuti, e metti in opera le mie leggi, ed osservi tutti i miei comandamenti, per camminare in essi; io atterrò fermamente inverso te la mia parola, che io ho detta a Davide, tuo padre;

13 ed abiterò in mezzo de’ figliuoli d’Israele, e non abbandonerò il mio popolo Israele.

14 Salomone adunque edificò la Casa, e la compiè.

15 Or egli intavolò le mura della Casa di dentro d’assi di cedro; egli coperse il di dentro di legno, dal suolo della Casa fino al sommo delle pareti, e al coperto; e coperse il suolo della Casa d’assi di abete.

16 Egli intavolò eziandio d’assi di cedro venti cubiti verso il fondo della Casa, dal suolo fino al sommo delle pareti; e fabbricò quello spazio indentro per l’Oracolo, pel Luogo santissimo.

17 E la Casa, cioè il Tempio anteriore, era di quaranta cubiti.

18 E il legno di cedro, ch’era dentro la Casa, era intagliato di coloquintide, e di fiori aperti; ogni cosa era di cedro, non si vedeva alcuna pietra.

19 Dispose eziandio l’Oracolo, dentro della Casa, del fondo, per mettervi l’Arca del Patto del Signore.

20 E le facciate dell’Oracolo erano di venti cubiti di lunghezza, e di venti di larghezza, e di venti di altezza, ed egli lo coperse d’oro finissimo; e coperse di cedro l’Altare.

21 E Salomone coperse la casa di dentro, d’oro finissimo, e fece davanti all’Oracolo delle serrature d’oro; e coperse quello d’oro.

22 Così coperse d’oro interamente tutta la Casa. Coperse eziandio d’oro tutto l’Altare ch’era presso all’Oracolo.

23 E fece due Cherubini di legno di ulivo, dentro all’Oracolo, de’ quali ciascuno era alto dieci cubiti.

24 E l’una delle ale dell’uno de’ Cherubini era lunga cinque cubiti, e l’altra altrettanto; dall’estremità d’una delle ale di esso, fino all’estremità dell’altra, vi erano dieci cubiti.

25 L’altro Cherubino era parimente di dieci cubiti; amendue i Cherubini erano di una stessa misura e scultura.

26 L’altezza d’uno de’ Cherubini era di dieci cubiti, e parimente l’altezza dell’altro.

27 Ed egli mise i Cherubini nel mezzo della parte interiore della Casa; e quelli spandevano le loro ale di Cherubini; talchè l’ala dell’uno toccava l’una delle pareti, e l’ala dell’altro l’altra; e le loro ale, ch’erano verso il mezzo della Casa, si toccavano l’una l’altra.

28 E coperse d’oro i Cherubini.

29 E fece intagliare attorno attorno, in tutte le pareti della Casa, delle figure di rilievo, di Cherubini, e di palme, e di fiori aperti, di dentro, e di fuori.

30 Coperse eziandio d’oro il suolo della Casa, di dentro e di fuori.

31 Ed all’entrata dell’Oracolo fece delle reggi di legno di ulivo; il limitare e gli stipiti erano di una quinta parte.

32 E sopra quelle due reggi di legno di ulivo, fece intagliare delle figure di Cherubini, e di palme, e di fiori aperti, e li coperse d’oro; e distese l’oro sopra i Cherubini, e sopra le palme.

33 Fece ancora all’entrata del Tempio degli stipiti di legno di ulivo, d’una quarta parte;

34 e due reggi di legno di abete, ciascuna delle quali si ripiegava in due.

35 E vi fece intagliare de’ Cherubini, e delle palme, e de’ fiori aperti, e li coperse d’oro apposto sottilmente sopra gl’intagli.

36 Edificò eziandio il cortile di dentro, a tre ordini di pietre pulite, ed un ordine di travatura di cedro.

37 L’anno quarto, nel mese di Ziv, furono posti i fondamenti della Casa del Signore;

38 e l’anno undecimo, nel mese di Bul, che è l’ottavo mese, la Casa fu compiuta, secondo tutto il suo disegno ed i suoi ordini. Così Salomone mise sett’anni ad edificarla.

1 Four hundred and eighty years after the people of Israel left Egypt, during the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the second month, the month of Ziv, Solomon began work on the Temple.

2 Inside it was 90 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 45 feet high.

3 The entrance room was 15 feet deep and 30 feet wide, as wide as the sanctuary itself.

4 The walls of the Temple had openings in them, narrower on the outside than on the inside.

5 Against the outside walls, on the sides and the back of the Temple, a three-storied annex was built, each story 7 1/2 feet high.

6 Each room in the lowest story was 7 1/2 feet wide, in the middle story 9 feet wide, and in the top story 10 1/2 feet wide. The Temple wall on each floor was thinner than on the floor below, so that the rooms could rest on the wall without having their beams built into it.

7 The stones with which the Temple was built had been prepared at the quarry, so that there was no noise made by hammers, axes, or any other iron tools as the Temple was being built.

8 The entrance to the lowest story of the annex was on the south side of the Temple, with stairs leading up to the second and third stories.

9 So King Solomon finished building the Temple. He put in a ceiling made of beams and boards of cedar.

10 The three-storied annex, each story 7 1/2 feet high, was built against the outside walls of the Temple, and was joined to them by cedar beams.

11 The Lord said to Solomon,

12 "If you obey all my laws and commands, I will do for you what I promised your father David.

13 I will live among my people Israel in this Temple that you are building, and I will never abandon them."

14 So Solomon finished building the Temple.

15 The inside walls were covered with cedar panels from the floor to the ceiling, and the floor was made of pine.

16 An inner room, called the Most Holy Place, was built in the rear of the Temple. It was 30 feet long and was partitioned off by cedar boards reaching from the floor to the ceiling.

17 The room in front of the Most Holy Place was 60 feet long.

18 The cedar panels were decorated with carvings of gourds and flowers; the whole interior was covered with cedar, so that the stones of the walls could not be seen.

19 In the rear of the Temple an inner room was built, where the Lord's Covenant Box was to be placed.

20 This inner room was 30 feet long, 30 feet wide, and 30 feet high, all covered with pure gold. The altar was covered with cedar panels.

21 The inside of the Temple was covered with gold, and gold chains were placed across the entrance of the inner room, which was also covered with gold.

22 The whole interior of the Temple was covered with gold, as well as the altar in the Most Holy Place.

23 Two winged creatures were made of olive wood and placed in the Most Holy Place, each one 15 feet tall.

24 Both were of the same size and shape. Each had two wings, each wing 7 1/2 feet long, so that the distance from one wing tip to the other was 15 feet.

27 They were placed side by side in the Most Holy Place, so that two of their outstretched wings touched each other in the middle of the room, and the other two wings touched the walls.

28 The two winged creatures were covered with gold.

29 The walls of the main room and of the inner room were all decorated with carved figures of winged creatures, palm trees, and flowers.

30 Even the floor was covered with gold.

31 A double door made of olive wood was set in place at the entrance of the Most Holy Place; the top of the doorway was a pointed arch.

32 The doors were decorated with carved figures of winged creatures, palm trees, and flowers. The doors, the winged creatures, and the palm trees were covered with gold.

33 For the entrance to the main room a rectangular doorframe of olive wood was made.

34 There were two folding doors made of pine

35 and decorated with carved figures of winged creatures, palm trees, and flowers, which were evenly covered with gold.

36 An inner court was built in front of the Temple, enclosed with walls which had one layer of cedar beams for every three layers of stone.

37 The foundation of the Temple was laid in the second month, the month of Ziv, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign.

38 In the eighth month, the month of Bul, in the eleventh year of Solomon's reign, the Temple was completely finished exactly as it had been planned. It had taken Solomon seven years to build it.
