1 ALLORA il re Salomone adunò appresso di sè, in Gerusalemme, gli Anziani d’Israele, e tutti i capi delle tribù, i principali delle nazioni paterne de’ figliuoli d’Israele, per trasportar l’Arca del Patto del Signore, dalla Città di Davide, la quale è Sion.

2 Si raunarono ancora appresso del re Salomone tutti gli uomini d’Israele, nel mese di Etanim, che è il settimo mese, nella festa.

3 E tutti gli Anziani d’Israele essendo arrivati, i sacerdoti levarono l’Arca in su le spalle.

4 E trasportarono l’Arca del Signore, e il Tabernacolo della convenenza, e tutti i vasellamenti sacri ch’erano nel Tabernacolo. I Sacerdoti e i Leviti li trasportarono.

5 E il re Salomone, e tutta la raunanza d’Israele che si era adunata appresso di lui, camminavano con lui davanti all’Arca, sacrificando pecore e buoi, in tanto numero che non si potevano nè contare,

6 nè annoverare. Ed i sacerdoti portarono l’Arca del Patto del Signore dentro al suo luogo, nell’Oracolo della Casa, nel Luogo santissimo, sotto alle ale de’ Cherubini;

7 perciocchè i Cherubini spandevano le ale sopra il luogo dell’Arca, e coprivano l’Arca, e le sue stanghe, disopra.

8 E tirarono infuori le stanghe, per tutta la lor lunghezza; ed i capi di esse si vedevano dal Luogo santo, in su la parte anteriore dell’Oracolo, e non si videro più di fuori; anzi son restate quivi fino a questo giorno.

9 Dentro dell’Arca non vi era null’altro, che le due Tavole di pietra, che Mosè vi avea riposte in Horeb, quando il Signore fece patto co’ figliuoli d’Israele, dopo che furono usciti del paese di Egitto.

10 Or avvenne che, dopo che i sacerdoti furono usciti fuori del Luogo santo, una nuvola riempiè la Casa del Signore.

11 Ed i sacerdoti non potevano stare in piè per fare il servigio, per cagione della nuvola; perciocchè la gloria del Signore avea ripiena la Casa del Signore.

12 ALLORA Salomone disse: Il Signore ha detto ch’egli abiterebbe nella caligine.

13 Io ti ho pure edificata, o Signore, una Casa per tuo abitacolo, una stanza per tua dimora in perpetuo.

14 Poi il re voltò la faccia, e benedisse tutta la raunanza d’Israele or tutta la raunanza d’Israele stava quivi in piè,

15 e disse: Benedetto sia il Signore Iddio d’Israele, il quale con la sua bocca parlò a Davide, mio padre, ed ha con la sua mano adempiuto ciò ch’egli avea detto.

16 Cioè: Dal giorno che io trassi fuor di Egitto il mio popolo Israele, io non ho scelta alcuna città d’infra tutte le tribù d’Israele, per edificarvi una Casa, nella quale il mio Nome dimorasse; ma io ho scelto Davide, per istabilirlo sopra il mio popolo Israele.

17 Or Davide mio padre ebbe in cuore di edificare una Casa al Signore Iddio d’Israele.

18 Ma il Signore disse a Davide, mio padre: Quant’è a quello che tu hai avuto in cuore di edificare una Casa al mio Nome, bene hai fatto di averlo avuto in cuore;

19 nondimeno tu non edificherai essa Casa; anzi il tuo figliuolo, che uscirà dei tuoi lombi, sarà quello che edificherà questa Casa al mio Nome.

20 Il Signore adunque ha messa ad effetto la parola ch’egli avea detta; ed io son surto in luogo di Davide, mio padre, e son seduto sopra il trono d’Israele, siccome il Signore ne avea parlato, ed ho edificata questa Casa al Nome del Signore Iddio d’Israele.

21 E quivi ho costituito un luogo per l’Arca, nella quale è il Patto del Signore, ch’egli fece co’ nostri padri, quando li trasse fuor del paese di Egitto.

22 Poi Salomone si presentò davanti all’Altare del Signore, in presenza di tutta la raunanza d’Israele, ed aperse le palme delle sue mani verso il cielo,

23 e disse: O Signore Iddio d’Israele, ei non vi è, nè disopra ne’ cieli, nè disotto sopra la terra, alcun dio pari a te, che attieni il patto e la benignità inverso i tuoi servitori, che camminano davanti a te con tutto il cuor loro;

24 che hai attenuto al tuo servitore Davide, mio padre, ciò che tu gli avevi detto; e ciò che tu gli avevi detto con la tua bocca, tu l’hai adempiuto con la tua mano, come oggi appare.

25 Ora dunque, Signore Iddio di Israele, osserva al tuo servitore Davide, mio padre, ciò che tu gli hai detto; cioè: Ei non ti verrà giammai meno, dal mio cospetto, uomo che segga in sul trono d’Israele; purchè i tuoi figliuoli prendano guardia alla via loro, per camminare davanti a me, come tu sei camminato.

26 Ora dunque, o Dio d’Israele, sia, ti prego, verificata la tua parola, che tu hai detta al tuo servitore Davide, mio padre.

27 Ma pure veramente abiterà Iddio in su la terra? Ecco, i cieli, ed i cieli de’ cieli non ti possono capire; quanto meno questa Casa la quale io ho edificata?

28 Tuttavolta, o Signore Iddio mio, riguarda all’orazione del tuo servitore, ed alla sua supplicazione, per ascoltare il grido, e l’orazione la quale il tuo servitore fa oggi nel tuo cospetto;

29 acciocchè gli occhi tuoi sieno aperti, notte e giorno verso questa Casa; verso il luogo del qual tu hai detto: Il mio Nome sarà quivi; per ascoltar l’orazione che il tuo servitore farà, volgendosi verso questo luogo.

30 Esaudisci adunque la supplicazione del tuo servitore, e del tuo popolo Israele, quando ti faranno orazione, volgendosi verso questo luogo; ascoltali dal luogo della tua stanza ne’ cieli; ed ascoltandoli, perdona loro.

31 Quando alcuno avrà peccato contro al suo prossimo, ed esso avrà da lui richiesto il giuramento, per farlo giurare; ed il giuramento sarà venuto davanti al tuo Altare, in questa Casa, porgi le orecchie dal cielo,

32 ed opera, e giudica i tuoi servitori, condannando il colpevole, per fargli ritornare in su la testa ciò che egli avrà fatto; ed assolvendo il giusto, per rendergli secondo la sua giustizia.

33 Quando il tuo popolo Israele sarà stato sconfitto dal nemico, perchè avrà peccato contro a te; se poi si converte a te, e dà gloria al tuo Nome, e ti fa orazione e supplicazione, in questa Casa,

34 esaudiscilo dal cielo, e perdona al tuo popolo Israele il suo peccato, e riconducilo al paese che tu desti a’ suoi padri.

35 Quando il cielo sarà serrato, e non pioverà, perchè i figliuoli d’Israele avranno peccato contro a te; se essi fanno orazione, volgendosi verso questo luogo, e dànno gloria al tuo Nome, e si convertono da’ lor peccati, perciocchè tu li avrai afflitti,

36 esaudiscili dal cielo, e perdona a’ tuoi servitori, ed al tuo popolo Israele, il lor peccato, dopo che tu avrai loro mostrato il buon cammino, per lo quale hanno da camminare; e manda la pioggia in su la terra, la quale tu hai data per eredità al tuo popolo.

37 Quando vi sarà nel paese fame, o pestilenza, od arsura, o rubigine, o locuste, o bruchi; ovvero, quando i nemici strigneranno il tuo popolo, nel paese della sua stanza; ovvero, quando vi sarà qualunque piaga, e qualunque infermità,

38 esaudisci ogni orazione, ed ogni supplicazione, che farà qualunque persona, o tutto il tuo popolo Israele, quando ciascuno di loro avrà conosciuta la piaga del suo cuore, ed avrà aperte le palme delle sue mani verso questa Casa.

39 Esaudiscila dal cielo, stanza della tua abitazione, e perdona, ed opera, e rendi a ciascuno secondo ogni sua via, come tu avrai conosciuto il suo cuore; perciocchè tu solo conosci il cuore di tutti i figliuoli degli uomini;

40 acciocchè essi ti temano tutto il tempo che viveranno in su la terra che tu hai data a’ padri nostri.

41 Esaudisci eziandio il forestiere che non sarà del tuo popolo Israele, e sarà venuto di lontan paese, per cagione del tuo Nome.

42 Perciocchè udiranno parlare del tuo gran Nome, e della tua possente mano, e del tuo braccio steso. Quando adunque un tale sarà venuto, ed avrà fatta orazione in questa Casa,

43 esaudiscila dal cielo, stanza della tua abitazione, e fa’ secondo tutto quello per che quel forestiere ti avrà invocato; acciocchè tutti i popoli della terra conoscano il tuo Nome, per temerti, come il tuo popolo Israele; e per conoscere che questa Casa che io ho edificata, si chiama del tuo Nome.

44 Quando il tuo popolo sarà uscito in guerra contro a’ suoi nemici, per la via per la quale tu lo avrai mandato, e ti avrà fatta, o Signore, orazione volgendosi verso la città che tu hai eletta, e verso la Casa che io ho edificata al tuo Nome,

45 esaudisci dal cielo la sua orazione, e la sua supplicazione, e fagli ragione.

46 Quando avranno peccato contro a te perciocchè non vi è uomo alcuno che non pecchi, e tu ti sarai adirato contro a loro, e li avrai messi in potere dei lor nemici, e quelli che li avranno presi li avranno menati in cattività, in paese nemico, o lontano, o vicino;

47 se nel paese, nel quale saranno stati menati in cattività, si ravveggono, e si convertono, e ti supplicano, nel paese di coloro che li avranno menati in cattività, dicendo: Noi abbiamo peccato, e commessa iniquità, noi siamo colpevoli;

48 se si convertono a te con tutto il cuor loro, e con tutta l’anima loro, nel paese dei loro nemici, che li avranno menati in cattività; e ti fanno orazione, volgendosi verso il paese loro, che tu hai dato a’ lor padri, e verso la città che tu hai eletta, e verso la Casa che io ho edificata al tuo Nome,

49 esaudisci dal cielo, stanza della tua abitazione, la loro orazione, e la lor supplicazione, e fa’ lor ragione.

50 E perdona al tuo popolo che avrà peccato contro a te; e rimetti loro tutti i lor misfatti, che avranno commessi contro a te; e rendi loro misericordiosi quelli che li avranno menati in cattività, acciocchè abbiano pietà di loro;

51 perciocchè essi sono tua gente, e tua eredità, che tu hai tratta fuor di Egitto, di mezzo della fornace di ferro.

52 Sieno gli occhi tuoi aperti alla supplicazione del tuo servitore, ed alla supplicazione del tuo popolo Israele, per esaudirli in tutto ciò per che t’invocheranno.

53 Perciocchè tu li hai messi da parte, per tua eredità, d’infra tutti i popoli della terra, siccome tu ne parlasti per lo tuo servitore Mosè, quando tu traesti fuor di Egitto i padri nostri, o Signore Iddio.

54 Ora, quando Salomone ebbe finito di far tutta questa orazione, e supplicazione al Signore, egli si levò su d’innanzi all’Altare del Signore, dove era stato inginocchione, con le palme delle mani aperte verso il cielo.

55 E rizzatosi in piè, benedisse tutta la raunanza d’Israele, ad alta voce, dicendo:

56 Benedetto sia il Signore, il quale ha dato riposo al suo popolo Israele, interamente secondo ch’egli ne avea parlato; e’ non è caduto a terra nulla di tutte le buone parole ch’egli avea pronunziate per Mosè, suo servitore.

57 Il Signore Iddio nostro sia con noi, come è stato co’ padri nostri; il Signore non ci abbandoni, e non ci lasci;

58 per piegare il cuor nostro inverso lui, acciocchè camminiamo in tutte le sue vie, ed osserviamo i suoi comandamenti, ed i suoi statuti, e le sue leggi, ch’egli ha ordinate ai nostri padri.

59 E queste mie parole, con le quali io ho fatta supplicazione nel cospetto del Signore, stieno presso del Signore Iddio nostro, giorno e notte; acciocchè egli mantenga la ragione del suo servitore, e del suo popolo Israele, secondo che occorrerà giorno per giorno;

60 affinchè tutti i popoli della terra conoscano che il Signore è Dio, e che non ve n’è alcun altro.

61 Sia dunque il cuor vostro intiero inverso il Signore Iddio nostro, per camminar ne’ suoi statuti, e per osservare i suoi comandamenti, come fate oggi.

62 Poi il re, e tutto Israele con lui, sacrificarono sacrificii davanti al Signore.

63 E Salomone sacrificò, per sacrificio da render grazie, il quale egli fece al Signore, ventiduemila buoi, e cenventimila pecore. Così il re e tutti i figliuoli d’Israele dedicarono la Casa del Signore.

64 In quel giorno il re dedicò il mezzo del Cortile, ch’era davanti alla Casa del Signore; perciocchè sacrificò quivi olocausti ed offerte, e il grasso de’ sacrificii da render grazie; perchè l’Altare di rame ch’era davanti al Signore, era troppo piccolo, per capirvi gli olocausti, e le offerte, e il grasso de’ sacrificii da render grazie.

65 Ed in quel tempo Salomone celebrò la solennità, insieme con tutto Israele, ch’era una gran raunanza, raccolta dall’entrata di Hamat fino al Torrente di Egitto, davanti al Signore Iddio nostro; e quella solennità durò sette giorni, e poi ancora sette altri, che furono quattordici giorni.

66 L’ottavo giorno egli licenziò il popolo; ed essi benedissero il re, e se ne andarono alle loro stanze, allegri e lieti di cuore, per cagione di tutti i beni che il Signore avea fatti a Davide, suo servitore, e ad Israele, suo popolo.

1 Then King Solomon summoned all the leaders of the tribes and clans of Israel to come to him in Jerusalem in order to take the Lord's Covenant Box from Zion, David's City, to the Temple.

2 They all assembled during the Festival of Shelters in the seventh month, in the month of Ethanim.

3 When all the leaders had gathered, the priests lifted the Covenant Box

4 and carried it to the Temple. The Levites and the priests also moved the Tent of the Lord's presence and all its equipment to the Temple.

5 King Solomon and all the people of Israel assembled in front of the Covenant Box and sacrificed a large number of sheep and cattle - too many to count.

6 Then the priests carried the Covenant Box into the Temple and put it in the Most Holy Place, beneath the winged creatures.

7 Their outstretched wings covered the box and the poles it was carried by.

8 The ends of the poles could be seen by anyone standing directly in front of the Most Holy Place, but from nowhere else. (The poles are still there today.)

9 There was nothing inside the Covenant Box except the two stone tablets which Moses had placed there at Mount Sinai, when the Lord made a covenant with the people of Israel as they were coming from Egypt.

10 As the priests were leaving the Temple, it was suddenly filled with a cloud

11 shining with the dazzling light of the Lord's presence, and they could not go back in to perform their duties.

12 Then Solomon prayed: "You, Lord, have placed the sun in the sky, yet you have chosen to live in clouds and darkness.

13 Now I have built a majestic temple for you, a place for you to live in forever."

14 As the people stood there, King Solomon turned to face them, and he asked God's blessing on them.

15 He said, "Praise the Lord God of Israel! He has kept the promise he made to my father David, when he told him,

16 "From the time I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen any city in all the land of Israel in which a temple should be built where I would be worshiped. But I chose you, David, to rule my people.' "

17 And Solomon continued, "My father David planned to build a temple for the worship of the Lord God of Israel,

18 but the Lord said to him, "You were right in wanting to build a temple for me,

19 but you will never build it. It is your son, your own son, who will build my temple.'

20 "And now the Lord has kept his promise. I have succeeded my father as king of Israel, and I have built the Temple for the worship of the Lord God of Israel.

21 I have also provided a place in the Temple for the Covenant Box containing the stone tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with our ancestors when he brought them out of Egypt."

22 Then in the presence of the people Solomon went and stood in front of the altar, where he raised his arms

23 and prayed, "Lord God of Israel, there is no god like you in heaven above or on earth below! You keep your covenant with your people and show them your love when they live in wholehearted obedience to you.

24 You have kept the promise you made to my father David; today every word has been fulfilled.

25 And now, Lord God of Israel, I pray that you will also keep the other promise you made to my father when you told him that there would always be one of his descendants ruling as king of Israel, provided they obeyed you as carefully as he did.

26 So now, O God of Israel, let everything come true that you promised to my father David, your servant.

27 "But can you, O God, really live on earth? Not even all of heaven is large enough to hold you, so how can this Temple that I have built be large enough?

28 Lord my God, I am your servant. Listen to my prayer, and grant the requests I make to you today.

29 Watch over this Temple day and night, this place where you have chosen to be worshiped. Hear me when I face this Temple and pray.

30 Hear my prayers and the prayers of your people when they face this place and pray. In your home in heaven hear us and forgive us.

31 "When a person is accused of wronging another and is brought to your altar in this Temple to take an oath that he is innocent,

32 O Lord, listen in heaven and judge your servants. Punish the guilty one as he deserves, and acquit the one who is innocent.

33 "When your people Israel are defeated by their enemies because they have sinned against you, and then when they turn to you and come to this Temple, humbly praying to you for forgiveness,

34 listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of your people and bring them back to the land which you gave to their ancestors.

35 "When you hold back the rain because your people have sinned against you, and then when they repent and face this Temple, humbly praying to you,

36 listen to them in heaven. Forgive the sins of the king and of the people of Israel, and teach them to do what is right. Then, O Lord, send rain on this land of yours, which you gave to your people as a permanent possession.

37 "When there is famine in the land or an epidemic or the crops are destroyed by scorching winds or swarms of locusts, or when your people are attacked by their enemies, or when there is disease or sickness among them,

38 listen to their prayers. If any of your people Israel, out of heartfelt sorrow, stretch out their hands in prayer toward this Temple,

39 hear their prayer. Listen to them in your home in heaven, forgive them, and help them. You alone know the thoughts of the human heart. Deal with each person as he deserves,

40 so that your people may obey you all the time they live in the land which you gave to our ancestors.

41 "When a foreigner who lives in a distant land hears of your fame and of the great things you have done for your people and comes to worship you and to pray at this Temple,

43 listen to his prayer. In heaven, where you live, hear him and do what he asks you to do, so that all the peoples of the world may know you and obey you, as your people Israel do. Then they will know that this Temple I have built is the place where you are to be worshiped.

44 "When you command your people to go into battle against their enemies and they pray to you, wherever they are, facing this city which you have chosen and this Temple which I have built for you,

45 listen to their prayers. Hear them in heaven and give them victory.

46 "When your people sin against you - and there is no one who does not sin - and in your anger you let their enemies defeat them and take them as prisoners to some other land, even if that land is far away,

47 listen to your people's prayers. If there in that land they repent and pray to you, confessing how sinful and wicked they have been, hear their prayers, O Lord.

48 If in that land they truly and sincerely repent and pray to you as they face toward this land which you gave to our ancestors, this city which you have chosen, and this Temple which I have built for you,

49 then listen to their prayers. In your home in heaven hear them and be merciful to them.

50 Forgive all their sins and their rebellion against you, and make their enemies treat them with kindness.

51 They are your own people, whom you brought out of Egypt, that blazing furnace.

52 "Sovereign Lord, may you always look with favor on your people Israel and their king, and hear their prayer whenever they call to you for help.

53 You chose them from all the peoples to be your own people, as you told them through your servant Moses when you brought our ancestors out of Egypt."

54 After Solomon had finished praying to the Lord, he stood up in front of the altar, where he had been kneeling with uplifted hands.

55 In a loud voice he asked God's blessings on all the people assembled there. He said,

56 "Praise the Lord who has given his people peace, as he promised he would. He has kept all the generous promises he made through his servant Moses.

57 May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us;

58 may he make us obedient to him, so that we will always live as he wants us to live, keeping all the laws and commands he gave our ancestors.

59 May the Lord our God remember at all times this prayer and these petitions I have made to him. May he always be merciful to the people of Israel and to their king, according to their daily needs.

60 And so all the nations of the world will know that the Lord alone is God - there is no other.

61 May you, his people, always be faithful to the Lord our God, obeying all his laws and commands as you do today."

62 Then King Solomon and all the people there offered sacrifices to the Lord.

63 He sacrificed 22,000 head of cattle and 120,000 sheep as fellowship offerings. And so the king and all the people dedicated the Temple.

64 That same day he also consecrated the central part of the courtyard, the area in front of the Temple, and then he offered there the sacrifices burned whole, the grain offerings, and the fat of the animals for the fellowship offerings. He did this because the bronze altar was too small for all these offerings.

65 There at the Temple, Solomon and all the people of Israel celebrated the Festival of Shelters for seven days. There was a huge crowd of people from as far away as Hamath Pass in the north and the Egyptian border in the south.

66 On the eighth day Solomon sent the people home. They all praised him and went home happy because of all the blessings that the Lord had given his servant David and his people Israel.
