1 ORA, dopo che Salomone ebbe finito di edificar la Casa del Signore, e la casa reale, e tutto ciò ch’egli ebbe desiderio e volontà di fare,

2 il Signore, gli apparve la seconda volta, come gli era apparito in Gabaon;

3 e gli disse: Io ho esaudita la tua orazione e la tua supplicazione, che tu hai fatta davanti a me; io ho santificata questa Casa, la quale tu hai edificata per mettervi il mio Nome in perpetuo; e gli occhi miei, e il cuor mio saranno del continuo là.

4 E quant’è a te, se tu cammini nel mio cospetto, come è camminato Davide, tuo padre, in integrità di cuore, ed in dirittura, per far secondo tutto quello che io ti ho comandato; e se tu osservi i miei statuti e le mie leggi;

5 io altresì stabilirò il trono del tuo reame sopra Israele, in perpetuo, come io promisi a Davide, tuo padre, dicendo: Giammai non ti verrà meno uomo che segga in sul trono d’Israele.

6 Ma, se pur voi ed i vostri figliuoli vi rivolgete indietro da me, e non osservate i miei comandamenti e i miei statuti, i quali io vi ho proposti; anzi andate, e servite ad altri dii, e li adorate;

7 io distruggerò Israele d’in su la terra che io gli ho data, e gitterò via dal mio cospetto la Casa, la quale io ho santificata al mio Nome; ed Israele sarà in proverbio ed in favola fra tutti i popoli.

8 E quant’è a questa Casa, che sarà stata eccelsa, chiunque passerà presso di essa stupirà, e sufolerà; e si dirà: Perchè ha fatto il Signore in questo modo a questo paese ed a questa Casa?

9 E si risponderà: Perciocchè hanno abbandonato il Signore Iddio loro, il qual trasse i lor padri fuor del paese di Egitto; e si sono appresi ad altri dii, e li hanno adorati, e hanno loro servito; perciò il Signore ha fatto venire sopra loro tutto questo male.

10 ORA in capo de’ venti anni, ne’ quali Salomone edificò le due case, la Casa del Signore, e la casa reale,

11 Hiram, re di Tiro, avendo fatto presente a Salomone di legname di cedro, e d’abete, e d’oro, ad ogni suo piacere, il re Salomone allora gli diede venti città nel paese di Galilea.

12 Ed Hiram uscì di Tiro, per veder le città che Salomone gli avea date; ma non gli piacquero.

13 E disse: Che città son queste che tu mi hai date, fratel mio? E le chiamò: Il paese di Cabul. E questo nome è restato loro fino a questo giorno.

14 Or Hiram avea mandato al re centoventi talenti d’oro.

15 Or questa fu la maniera che il re Salomone osservò nella levata della gente, ch’egli fece per edificar la Casa del Signore, e la casa sua, e Millo, e le mura di Gerusalemme, ed Hasor, e Meghiddo, e Ghezer

16 Faraone, re di Egitto, era salito, ed avea preso Ghezer, e l’avea arsa col fuoco, ed avea uccisi i Cananei che abitavano nella città; poi l’avea data per un presente alla sua figliuola, moglie di Salomone;

17 onde Salomone riedificò Ghezer, e Bethoron disotto,

18 e Baalat, e Tadmor, nel deserto del paese,

19 e tutte le città da magazzini di Salomone, e le città dove erano i carri, e dove stava la gente a cavallo; in somma, tutto quello che Salomone ebbe desiderio di edificare in Gerusalemme, e nel Libano, ed in tutto il paese della sua signoria.

20 Egli levò, per esser tributario a fazioni personali, tutto il popolo rimasto degli Amorrei, degli Hittei, dei Ferizzei, degli Hivvei, e dei Gebusei, i quali non erano de’ figliuoli d’Israele;

21 cioè i lor figliuoli rimasti dopo loro nel paese, i quali i figliuoli d’Israele non aveano potuti distruggere; ed è durato infino a questo giorno.

22 Ma Salomone non fece servo alcuno de’ figliuoli d’Israele; anzi essi erano uomini di guerra, e suoi ministri, e suoi colonnelli, e suoi capitani, e capi de’ suoi carri, e della sua cavalleria.

23 Questo fu il numero de’ capi de’ commissari, che furono costituiti sopra l’opera di Salomone, cioè: cinquecencinquanta, i quali comandavano alla gente che lavorava all’opera.

24 Ora la figliuola di Faraone non salì dalla città di Davide nella sua casa, che Salomone le avea edificata, se non allora ch’egli ebbe edificato Millo.

25 E, dopo ch’egli ebbe finito di edificare la Casa, egli offeriva tre volte l’anno olocausti, e sacrificii da render grazie, sopra l’Altare ch’egli avea edificato al Signore; e faceva profumi in su quello ch’era nel cospetto del Signore.

26 Il re Salomone fece ancora un navilio in Esion-gheber, ch’è presso di Elot, in sul lito del mar rosso, nel paese degl’Idumei.

27 Ed Hiram mandò in quel navilio, co’ servitori di Salomone, i suoi servitori marinari, intendenti dell’arte marinaresca.

28 Ed essi, arrivati in Ofir, tolsero di là quattrocenventi talenti d’oro, i quali condussero al re Salomone.

1 After King Solomon had finished building the Temple and the palace and everything else he wanted to build,

2 the Lord appeared to him again, as he had in Gibeon.

3 The Lord said to him, "I have heard your prayer. I consecrate this Temple which you have built as the place where I shall be worshiped forever. I will watch over it and protect it for all time.

4 If you will serve me in honesty and integrity, as your father David did, and if you obey my laws and do everything I have commanded you,

5 I will keep the promise I made to your father David when I told him that Israel would always be ruled by his descendants.

6 But if you or your descendants stop following me, disobey the laws and commands I have given you, and worship other gods,

7 then I will remove my people Israel from the land that I have given them. I will also abandon this Temple which I have consecrated as the place where I am to be worshiped. People everywhere will ridicule Israel and treat her with contempt.

8 This Temple will become a pile of ruins, and everyone who passes by will be shocked and amazed. "Why did the Lord do this to this land and this Temple?' they will ask.

9 People will answer, "It is because they abandoned the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt. They gave their allegiance to other gods and worshiped them. That is why the Lord has brought this disaster on them.' "

10 It took Solomon twenty years to build the Temple and his palace.

11 King Hiram of Tyre had provided him with all the cedar and pine and with all the gold he wanted for this work. After it was finished, King Solomon gave Hiram twenty towns in the region of Galilee.

12 Hiram went to see them, and he did not like them.

13 So he said to Solomon, "So these, my brother, are the towns you have given me!" For this reason the area is still called Cabul.

14 Hiram had sent Solomon almost five tons of gold.

15 King Solomon used forced labor to build the Temple and the palace, to fill in land on the east side of the city, and to build the city wall. He also used it to rebuild the cities of Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer

16 (The king of Egypt had attacked Gezer and captured it, killing its inhabitants and setting fire to the city. Then he gave it as a wedding present to his daughter when she married Solomon,

17 and Solomon rebuilt it.) Using his forced labor, Solomon also rebuilt Lower Beth Horon,

18 Baalath, Tamar in the wilderness of Judah,

19 the cities where his supplies were kept, the cities for his horses and chariots, and everything else he wanted to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and elsewhere in his kingdom.

20 For his forced labor Solomon used the descendants of the people of Canaan whom the Israelites had not killed when they took possession of their land. These included Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, whose descendants continue to be slaves down to the present time.

22 Solomon did not make slaves of Israelites; they served as his soldiers, officers, commanders, chariot captains, and cavalry.

23 There were 550 officials in charge of the forced labor working on Solomon's various building projects.

24 Solomon filled in the land on the east side of the city, after his wife, the daughter of the king of Egypt, had moved from David's City to the palace Solomon built for her.

25 Three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built to the Lord. He also burned incense to the Lord. And so he finished building the Temple.

26 King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at Eziongeber, which is near Elath on the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba, in the land of Edom.

27 King Hiram sent some experienced sailors from his fleet to serve with Solomon's men.

28 They sailed to the land of Ophir and brought back to Solomon about sixteen tons of gold.
