1 Samuel unge a David como rey<br />Ahora bien, el Señor<br /> le dijo a Samuel:<br />—Ya has hecho suficiente duelo por Saúl. Lo he rechazado como rey de Israel, así que llena tu frasco con aceite de oliva y ve a Belén. Busca a un hombre llamado Isaí que vive allí, porque he elegido a uno de sus hijos para que sea mi rey.

The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.”
2 Pero Samuel le preguntó:<br />—¿Cómo puedo hacerlo? Si Saúl llega a enterarse, me matará.<br />—Lleva contigo una novilla —le contestó el Señor<br />— y di que has venido para ofrecer un sacrificio al Señor<br />.

But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The LORD said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.’
3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio, y te mostraré a cuál de sus hijos ungirás para mí.

Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.”
4 Así que Samuel hizo como el Señor<br /> le indicó. Cuando llegó a Belén, los ancianos del pueblo salieron a su encuentro temblando.<br />—¿Qué pasa? —le preguntaron—. ¿Vienes en son de paz?

Samuel did what the LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”
5 —Sí —contestó Samuel—, vine para ofrecer un sacrificio al Señor<br />. Purifíquense y vengan conmigo al sacrificio.<br />Luego Samuel realizó el rito de purificación para Isaí y sus hijos y también los invitó al sacrificio.

Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel se fijó en Eliab y pensó: «¡Seguramente este es el ungido del Señor<br />!».

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’s anointed stands here before the LORD.”
7 Pero el Señor<br /> le dijo a Samuel:<br />—No juzgues por su apariencia o por su estatura, porque yo lo he rechazado. El Señor<br /> no ve las cosas de la manera en que tú las ves. La gente juzga por las apariencias, pero el Señor<br /> mira el corazón.

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
8 Entonces Isaí le dijo a su hijo Abinadab que caminara delante de Samuel. Pero Samuel dijo:<br />—Este no es el que el Señor<br /> ha elegido.

Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
9 Después Isaí llamó a Simea,<br /> pero Samuel dijo:<br />—Tampoco es este a quien el Señor<br /> ha elegido.

Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen this one.”
10 De la misma manera, Isaí le presentó sus siete hijos a Samuel. Pero Samuel le dijo:<br />—El Señor<br /> no ha elegido a ninguno de ellos.

Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.”
11 Después Samuel preguntó:<br />—¿Son estos todos los hijos que tienes?<br />—Queda todavía el más joven —contestó Isaí—. Pero está en el campo cuidando las ovejas y las cabras.<br />—Manda llamarlo de inmediato —dijo Samuel—. No nos sentaremos a comer hasta que él llegue.

So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 Entonces Isaí mandó a buscarlo. El joven era trigueño y apuesto, y de hermosos ojos.<br />Y el Señor<br /> dijo:<br />—Este es, úngelo.

So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 Al estar David de pie entre sus hermanos, Samuel tomó el frasco de aceite de oliva que había traído y ungió a David con el aceite. Y el Espíritu del Señor<br /> vino con gran poder sobre David a partir de ese día. Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá.

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah.
14 David sirve en la corte de Saúl<br />Ahora bien, el Espíritu del Señor<br /> se había apartado de Saúl, y el Señor<br /> envió un espíritu atormentador.

Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him.
15 Algunos de los siervos de Saúl le dijeron:<br />—Un espíritu atormentador de parte de Dios te está afligiendo.

Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.
16 Busquemos a un buen músico para que toque el arpa cada vez que el espíritu atormentador te aflija. Tocará música relajante, y dentro de poco estarás bien.

Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 —Me parece bien —dijo Saúl—. Búsquenme a alguien que toque bien y tráiganlo aquí.

So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 Entonces un siervo le dijo a Saúl:<br />—Uno de los hijos de Isaí de Belén tiene mucho talento para tocar el arpa. No solo eso, es un guerrero valiente, un hombre de guerra y de buen juicio. También es un joven bien parecido y el Señor<br /> está con él.

One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior. He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the LORD is with him.”
19 Entonces Saúl mandó mensajeros a Isaí para decirle: «Envíame a tu hijo David, el pastor».

Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
20 Isaí hizo caso y envió a su hijo David a Saúl, junto con un cabrito, un burro cargado de pan y un cuero lleno de vino.

So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 Así que David llegó a donde estaba Saúl y quedó a su servicio. Saúl llegó a apreciar mucho a David, y el joven se convirtió en su escudero.

David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers.
22 Luego Saúl mandó un recado a Isaí con una petición: «Por favor, permite que David quede a mi servicio, porque me simpatiza mucho».

Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Y cada vez que el espíritu atormentador de parte de Dios afligía a Saúl, David tocaba el arpa. Entonces Saúl se sentía mejor, y el espíritu atormentador se iba.

Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
