1 Corinthians 11

RSVA 1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. RSVA 2 I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. RSVA 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a woman is her husband, and the head of Christ is God. NIV 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. RSVA 4 Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head, NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. RSVA 5 but any woman who prays or prophesies with her head unveiled dishonors her head--it is the same as if her head were shaven. NIV 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. RSVA 6 For if a woman will not veil herself, then she should cut off her hair; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her wear a veil. NIV 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. RSVA 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. RSVA 8 (For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; RSVA 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.) NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. RSVA 10 That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels. NIV 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. RSVA 11 (Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man nor man of woman; NIV 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. RSVA 12 for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman. And all things are from God.) NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. RSVA 13 Judge for yourselves; is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? RSVA 14 Does not nature itself teach you that for a man to wear long hair is degrading to him, NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, RSVA 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is her pride? For her hair is given to her for a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. RSVA 16 If any one is disposed to be contentious, we recognize no other practice, nor do the churches of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. RSVA 17 But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. RSVA 18 For, in the first place, when you assemble as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you; and I partly believe it, NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. RSVA 19 for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. RSVA 20 When you meet together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. NIV 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, RSVA 21 For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal, and one is hungry and another is drunk. NIV 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. RSVA 22 What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. NIV 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! RSVA 23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, RSVA 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” RSVA 25 In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” RSVA 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. RSVA 27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. NIV 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. RSVA 28 Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. NIV 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. RSVA 29 For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. NIV 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. RSVA 30 That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. RSVA 31 But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. NIV 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. RSVA 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world. NIV 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. RSVA 33 So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another-- NIV 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. RSVA 34 if any one is hungry, let him eat at home--lest you come together to be condemned. About the other things I will give directions when I come. NIV 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
