1 Corinthians 9

WEB 1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Haven't I seen Jesus Christ, our Lord? Aren't you my work in the Lord? NIV 1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? WEB 2 If to others I am not an apostle, yet at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. NIV 2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. WEB 3 My defense to those who examine me is this. NIV 3 This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. WEB 4 Have we no right to eat and to drink? NIV 4 Don’t we have the right to food and drink? WEB 5 Have we no right to take along a wife who is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? NIV 5 Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas ? WEB 6 Or have only Barnabas and I no right to not work? NIV 6 Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living? WEB 7 What soldier ever serves at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard, and doesn't eat of its fruit? Or who feeds a flock, and doesn't drink from the flock's milk? NIV 7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? WEB 8 Do I speak these things according to the ways of men? Or doesn't the law also say the same thing? NIV 8 Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? WEB 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out the corn." Is it for the oxen that God cares, NIV 9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned? WEB 10 or does he say it assuredly for our sake? Yes, for our sake it was written, because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should partake of his hope. NIV 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. WEB 11 If we sowed to you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we reap your fleshly things? NIV 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? WEB 12 If others partake of this right over you, don't we yet more? Nevertheless we did not use this right, but we bear all things, that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ. NIV 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. WEB 13 Don't you know that those who serve around sacred things eat from the things of the temple, and those who wait on the altar have their portion with the altar? NIV 13 Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? WEB 14 Even so did the Lord ordain that those who proclaim the gospel should live from the gospel. NIV 14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. WEB 15 But I have used none of these things, and I don't write these things that it may be done so in my case; for I would rather die, than that anyone should make my boasting void. NIV 15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. WEB 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast about; for necessity is laid on me; but woe is to me, if I don't preach the gospel. NIV 16 For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! WEB 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward. But if not of my own will, I have a stewardship entrusted to me. NIV 17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. WEB 18 What then is my reward? That, when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, so as not to abuse my authority in the gospel. NIV 18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel. WEB 19 For though I was free from all, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more. NIV 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. WEB 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law; NIV 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. WEB 21 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law. NIV 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. WEB 22 To the weak I became as weak, that I might gain the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I may by all means save some. NIV 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. WEB 23 Now I do this for the gospel's sake, that I may be a joint partaker of it. NIV 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. WEB 24 Don't you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win. NIV 24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. WEB 25 Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. NIV 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. WEB 26 I therefore run like that, as not uncertainly. I fight like that, as not beating the air, NIV 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. WEB 27 but I beat my body and bring it into submission, for fear that by any means, that after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected. NIV 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
