1 Peter 2

KJV 1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, ESV 1 So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. KJV 2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: ESV 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation-- KJV 3 If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. ESV 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. KJV 4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, ESV 4 As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, KJV 5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. ESV 5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. KJV 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. ESV 6 For it stands in Scripture: "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame." KJV 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, ESV 7 So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, "The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," KJV 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. ESV 8 and "A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. "They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. KJV 9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: ESV 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. KJV 10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. ESV 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. KJV 11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; ESV 11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. KJV 12 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. ESV 12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. KJV 13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; ESV 13 Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, KJV 14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. ESV 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. KJV 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: ESV 15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. KJV 16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. ESV 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. KJV 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. ESV 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. KJV 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. ESV 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. KJV 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. ESV 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. KJV 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. ESV 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. KJV 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: ESV 21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. KJV 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ESV 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. KJV 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: ESV 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. KJV 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. ESV 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. KJV 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. ESV 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
