1 Timothy 1

CEBA 1 From Paul, who is an apostle of Jesus Christ by the command of God our savior and of Christ Jesus our hope. NIV 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, CEBA 2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord. NIV 2 To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. CEBA 3 When I left for Macedonia, I asked you to stay behind in Ephesus so that you could instruct certain individuals not to spread wrong teaching. NIV 3 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer CEBA 4 They shouldn't pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. Their teaching only causes useless guessing games instead of faithfulness to God's way of doing things. NIV 4 or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. CEBA 5 The goal of instruction is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. NIV 5 The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. CEBA 6 Because they missed this goal, some people have been distracted by talk that doesn't mean anything. NIV 6 Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. CEBA 7 They want to be teachers of Law without understanding either what they are saying or what they are talking about with such confidence. NIV 7 They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. CEBA 8 Now we know that the Law is good if used appropriately. NIV 8 We know that the law is good if one uses it properly. CEBA 9 We understand this: the Law isn't established for a righteous person but for people who live without laws and without obeying any authority. They are the ungodly and the sinners. They are people who are not spiritual, and nothing is sacred to them. They kill their fathers and mothers, and murder others. NIV 9 We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, CEBA 10 They are people who are sexually unfaithful, and people who have intercourse with the same sex. They are kidnappers, liars, individuals who give false testimonies in court, and those who do anything else that is opposed to sound teaching. NIV 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine CEBA 11 Sound teaching agrees with the glorious gospel of the blessed God that has been trusted to me. NIV 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me. CEBA 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength because he considered me faithful. So he appointed me to ministry NIV 12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. CEBA 13 even though I used to speak against him, attack his people, and I was proud. But I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and without faith. NIV 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. CEBA 14 Our Lord's favor poured all over me along with the faithfulness and love that are in Christ Jesus. NIV 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. CEBA 15 This saying is reliable and deserves full acceptance: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners"—and I'm the biggest sinner of all. NIV 15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. CEBA 16 But this is why I was shown mercy, so that Christ Jesus could show his endless patience to me first of all. So I'm an example for those who are going to believe in him for eternal life. NIV 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. CEBA 17 Now to the king of the ages, to the immortal, invisible, and only God, may honor and glory be given to him forever and always! Amen. NIV 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. CEBA 18 Timothy, my child, I'm giving you these instructions based on the prophecies that were once made about you. So if you follow them, you can wage a good war NIV 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, CEBA 19 because you have faith and a good conscience. Some people have ruined their faith because they refused to listen to their conscience, NIV 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. CEBA 20 such as Hymenaeus and Alexander. I've handed them over to Satan so that they can be taught not to speak against God. NIV 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.
