1 Corinthians 14:21-40

CSB 21 It is written in the law: By people of other languages and by the lips of foreigners, I will speak to this people; and even then, they will not listen to Me, says the Lord. NIV 21 In the Law it is written: “With other tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” CSB 22 It follows that speaking in other languages is intended as a sign, not to believers but to unbelievers. But prophecy is not for unbelievers but for believers. NIV 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. CSB 23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together, and all are speaking in [other] languages, and people who are uninformed or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds? NIV 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? CSB 24 But if all are prophesying, and some unbeliever or uninformed person comes in, he is convicted by all and is judged by all. NIV 24 But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, CSB 25 The secrets of his heart will be revealed, and as a result he will fall down on his face and worship God, proclaiming, "God is really among you." NIV 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!” CSB 26 How is it then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each one has a psalm, a teaching, a revelation, [another] language, or an interpretation. All things must be done for edification. NIV 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. CSB 27 If any person speaks in [another] language, there should be only two, or at the most three, each in turn, and someone must interpret. NIV 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. CSB 28 But if there is no interpreter, that person should keep silent in the church and speak to himself and to God. NIV 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God. CSB 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should evaluate. NIV 29 Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. CSB 30 But if something has been revealed to another person sitting there, the first prophet should be silent. NIV 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. CSB 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that everyone may learn and everyone may be encouraged. NIV 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. CSB 32 And the prophets' spirits are under the control of the prophets, NIV 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. CSB 33 since God is not a God of disorder but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, NIV 33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people. CSB 34 the women should be silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak, but should be submissive, as the law also says. NIV 34 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. CSB 35 And if they want to learn something, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church meeting. NIV 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. CSB 36 Did the word of God originate from you, or did it come to you only? NIV 36 Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? CSB 37 If anyone thinks he is a prophet or spiritual, he should recognize that what I write to you is the Lord's command. NIV 37 If anyone thinks they are a prophet or otherwise gifted by the Spirit, let them acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. CSB 38 But if anyone ignores this, he will be ignored. NIV 38 But if anyone ignores this, they will themselves be ignored. CSB 39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in [other] languages. NIV 39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. CSB 40 But everything must be done decently and in order. NIV 40 But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.
