1 Kings 19:1-13

GNT 1 King Ahab told his wife Jezebel everything that Elijah had done and how he had put all the prophets of Baal to death. NIV 1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. GNT 2 She sent a message to Elijah: "May the gods strike me dead if by this time tomorrow I don't do the same thing to you that you did to the prophets." NIV 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” GNT 3 Elijah was afraid and fled for his life; he took his servant and went to Beersheba in Judah. Leaving the servant there, NIV 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, GNT 4 Elijah walked a whole day into the wilderness. He stopped and sat down in the shade of a tree and wished he would die. "It's too much, Lord," he prayed. "Take away my life; I might as well be dead!" NIV 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” GNT 5 He lay down under the tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said, "Wake up and eat." NIV 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” GNT 6 He looked around and saw a loaf of bread and a jar of water near his head. He ate and drank, and lay down again. NIV 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. GNT 7 The Lord's angel returned and woke him up a second time, saying, "Get up and eat, or the trip will be too much for you." NIV 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” GNT 8 Elijah got up, ate and drank, and the food gave him enough strength to walk forty days to Sinai, the holy mountain. NIV 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. GNT 9 There he went into a cave to spend the night. Suddenly the Lord spoke to him, "Elijah, what are you doing here?" NIV 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” GNT 10 He answered, "Lord God Almighty, I have always served you - you alone. But the people of Israel have broken their covenant with you, torn down your altars, and killed all your prophets. I am the only one left - and they are trying to kill me!" NIV 10 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” GNT 11 "Go out and stand before me on top of the mountain," the Lord said to him. Then the Lord passed by and sent a furious wind that split the hills and shattered the rocks - but the Lord was not in the wind. The wind stopped blowing, and then there was an earthquake - but the Lord was not in the earthquake. NIV 11 The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. GNT 12 After the earthquake there was a fire - but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the soft whisper of a voice. NIV 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. GNT 13 When Elijah heard it, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. A voice said to him, "Elijah, what are you doing here?" NIV 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
