1 Samuel 3

MSG 1 The boy Samuel was serving God under Eli's direction. This was at a time when the revelation of God was rarely heard or seen. NIV 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. MSG 2 One night Eli was sound asleep (his eyesight was very bad - he could hardly see). NIV 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. MSG 3 It was well before dawn; the sanctuary lamp was still burning. Samuel was still in bed in the Temple of God, where the Chest of God rested. NIV 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was. MSG 4 Then God called out, "Samuel, Samuel!" NIV 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” MSG 5 Then he ran to Eli saying, "I heard you call. Here I am." Eli said, "I didn't call you. Go back to bed." And so he did. NIV 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. MSG 6 God called again, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, "I heard you call. Here I am." NIV 6 Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” MSG 7 (This all happened before Samuel knew God for himself. It was before the revelation of God had been given to him personally.) NIV 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. MSG 8 God called again, "Samuel!" - the third time! Yet again Samuel got up and went to Eli, "Yes? I heard you call me. Here I am." NIV 8 A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. MSG 9 So Eli directed Samuel, "Go back and lie down. If the voice calls again, say, 'Speak, God. I'm your servant, ready to listen.'" Samuel returned to his bed. NIV 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. MSG 10 Then God came and stood before him exactly as before, calling out, "Samuel! Samuel!" Samuel answered, "Speak. I'm your servant, ready to listen." NIV 10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” MSG 11 God said to Samuel, "Listen carefully. I'm getting ready to do something in Israel that is going to shake everyone up and get their attention. NIV 11 And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. MSG 12 The time has come for me to bring down on Eli's family everything I warned him of, every last word of it. NIV 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. MSG 13 I'm letting him know that the time's up. I'm bringing judgment on his family for good. He knew what was going on, that his sons were desecrating God's name and God's place, and he did nothing to stop them. NIV 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. MSG 14 This is my sentence on the family of Eli: The evil of Eli's family can never be wiped out by sacrifice or offering." NIV 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ” MSG 15 Samuel stayed in bed until morning, then rose early and went about his duties, opening the doors of the sanctuary, but he dreaded having to tell the vision to Eli. NIV 15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, MSG 16 But then Eli summoned Samuel: "Samuel, my son!" Samuel came running: "Yes? What can I do for you?" NIV 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.” MSG 17 "What did he say? Tell it to me, all of it. Don't suppress or soften one word, as God is your judge! I want it all, word for word as he said it to you." NIV 17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” MSG 18 So Samuel told him, word for word. He held back nothing. Eli said, "He is God. Let him do whatever he thinks best." NIV 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” MSG 19 Samuel grew up. God was with him, and Samuel's prophetic record was flawless. NIV 19 The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. MSG 20 Everyone in Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, recognized that Samuel was the real thing - a true prophet of God. NIV 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. MSG 21 God continued to show up at Shiloh, revealed through his word to Samuel at Shiloh. NIV 21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
