1 Samuel 3

WEB 1 The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. The word of Yahweh was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision. NIV 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. WEB 2 It happened at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see), NIV 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. WEB 3 and the lamp of God hadn't yet gone out, and Samuel had laid down [to sleep], in the temple of Yahweh, where the ark of God was; NIV 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was. WEB 4 that Yahweh called Samuel; and he said, Here am I. NIV 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” WEB 5 He ran to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. He said, I didn't call; lie down again. He went and lay down. NIV 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. WEB 6 Yahweh called yet again, Samuel. Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. He answered, I didn't call, my son; lie down again. NIV 6 Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” WEB 7 Now Samuel didn't yet know Yahweh, neither was the word of Yahweh yet revealed to him. NIV 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. WEB 8 Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for you called me. Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child. NIV 8 A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. WEB 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call you, that you shall say, Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. NIV 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. WEB 10 Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel said, Speak; for your servant hears. NIV 10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” WEB 11 Yahweh said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle. NIV 11 And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. WEB 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end. NIV 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. WEB 13 For I have told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse on themselves, and he didn't restrain them. NIV 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. WEB 14 Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated with sacrifice nor offering forever. NIV 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ” WEB 15 Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. Samuel feared to show Eli the vision. NIV 15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, WEB 16 Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. He said, Here am I. NIV 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.” WEB 17 He said, "What is the thing that [Yahweh] has spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you." NIV 17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” WEB 18 Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. He said, It is Yahweh: let him do what seems him good. NIV 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” WEB 19 Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. NIV 19 The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. WEB 20 All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Yahweh. NIV 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. WEB 21 Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh; for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Yahweh. NIV 21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
