2 Chronicles 11

CJB

NLT

1 When Rechav'am arrived in Yerushalayim, he assembled the house of Y'hudah and Binyamin, 180,000 select soldiers, to fight Isra'el and bring the rulership back to Rechav'am.
1 When Rehoboam arrived at Jerusalem, he mobilized the men of Judah and Benjamin—180,000 select troops—to fight against Israel and to restore the kingdom to himself.
2 But this word of ADONAI came to Sh'ma'yah the man of God:
2 But the LORD said to Shemaiah, the man of God,
3 "Speak to Rechav'am the son of Shlomo, king of Y'hudah, and to all Isra'el in Y'hudah and Binyamin; tell them
3 “Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin:
4 that this is what ADONAI says: 'You are not to go up and fight your brothers! Every man is to go back home, because this is my doing.'" They paid attention to the words of ADONAI and turned back from attacking Yarov'am.
4 ‘This is what the LORD says: Do not fight against your relatives. Go back home, for what has happened is my doing!’” So they obeyed the message of the LORD and did not fight against Jeroboam.
5 Rechav'am lived in Yerushalayim and built cities for defense in Y'hudah -
5 Rehoboam remained in Jerusalem and fortified various towns for the defense of Judah.
6 he built Beit-Lechem, 'Eitam, T'koa,
6 He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,
7 Beit-Tzur, Sokho, 'Adulam,
7 Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,
8 Gat, Mareshah, Zif,
8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
9 Adorayim, Lakhish, 'Azekah,
9 Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,
10 Tzor'ah, Ayalon and Hevron; these are fortified cities in Y'hudah and Binyamin.
10 Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron. These became the fortified towns of Judah and Benjamin.
11 He fortified the strongholds, appointed captains in charge of them and supplied them with food, olive oil and wine.
11 Rehoboam strengthened their defenses and stationed commanders in them, and he stored supplies of food, olive oil, and wine.
12 In every city he put shields and spears, making them very strong. Y'hudah and Binyamin stuck with him.
12 He also put shields and spears in these towns as a further safety measure. So only Judah and Benjamin remained under his control.
13 The cohanim and L'vi'im from wherever they lived throughout all Isra'el made themselves available to Rechav'am.
13 But all the priests and Levites living among the northern tribes of Israel sided with Rehoboam.
14 The L'vi'im left their pasture lands and property and came to Y'hudah and Yerushalayim; since Yarov'am and his sons had thrown them out, not allowing them to function as cohanim for ADONAI,
14 The Levites even abandoned their pasturelands and property and moved to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons would not allow them to serve the LORD as priests.
15 and had appointed for himself cohanim for the high places and for the images of goat-demons and calves that he had made.
15 Jeroboam appointed his own priests to serve at the pagan shrines, where they worshiped the goat and calf idols he had made.
16 Those from all the tribes of Isra'el who had set their hearts on seeking ADONAI, the God of Isra'el, followed them to Yerushalayim to sacrifice to ADONAI, the God of their fathers.
16 From all the tribes of Israel, those who sincerely wanted to worship the LORD, the God of Israel, followed the Levites to Jerusalem, where they could offer sacrifices to the LORD, the God of their ancestors.
17 For three years they strengthened the kingdom of Y'hudah and made Rechav'am the son of Shlomo strong, because for three years they followed the way of life of David and Shlomo.
17 This strengthened the kingdom of Judah, and for three years they supported Rehoboam son of Solomon, for during those years they faithfully followed in the footsteps of David and Solomon.
18 Rechav'am married Machalat the daughter of Yerimot the son of David and Avichayil the daughter of Eli'av the son of Yishai;
18 Rehoboam married his cousin Mahalath, the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of Abihail, the daughter of Eliab son of Jesse.
19 and she became the mother of his sons Ye'ush, Sh'maryah and Zaham.
19 Mahalath had three sons—Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.
20 After her, he married Ma'akhah the daughter of Avshalom; she became the mother of Aviyah, 'Atai, Ziza and Shlomit.
20 Later Rehoboam married another cousin, Maacah, the granddaughter of Absalom. Maacah gave birth to Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and Shelomith.
21 Rechav'am loved Ma'akhah more than all his other wives and concubines - for he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines and was the father of twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
21 Rehoboam loved Maacah more than any of his other wives and concubines. In all, he had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and they gave birth to twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.
22 Rechav'am appointed Aviyah the son of Ma'akhah chief, the leader of his brothers, because he intended to make him king.
22 Rehoboam appointed Maacah’s son Abijah as leader among the princes, making it clear that he would be the next king.
23 He was wise in his treatment of his sons, sending all of them throughout the territory of Y'hudah and Binyamin, to every fortified city, providing them with plenty of supplies and seeking for them many wives.
23 Rehoboam also wisely gave responsibilities to his other sons and stationed some of them in the fortified towns throughout the land of Judah and Benjamin. He provided them with generous provisions, and he found many wives for them.
