2 Corinthians 1

CEB

GW

1 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God's will, and Timothy our brother. To God's church that is in Corinth, along with all of God's people throughout Achaia.
1 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and from Timothy our brother. To God's church in the city of Corinth and to all God's holy people everywhere in Greece.
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Good will and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ are yours!
3 May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! He is the compassionate Father and God of all comfort.
3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! He is the Father who is compassionate and the God who gives comfort.
4 He's the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God.
4 He comforts us whenever we suffer. That is why whenever other people suffer, we are able to comfort them by using the same comfort we have received from God.
5 That is because we receive so much comfort through Christ in the same way that we share so many of Christ's sufferings.
5 Because Christ suffered so much for us, we can receive so much comfort from him.
6 So if we have trouble, it is to bring you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is to bring you comfort from the experience of endurance while you go through the same sufferings that we also suffer.
6 Besides, if we suffer, it brings you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, we can effectively comfort you when you endure the same sufferings that we endure.
7 Our hope for you is certain, because we know that as you are partners in suffering, so also you are partners in comfort.
7 We have confidence in you. We know that as you share our sufferings, you also share our comfort.
8 Brothers and sisters, we don't want you to be unaware of the troubles that we went through in Asia. We were weighed down with a load of suffering that was so far beyond our strength that we were afraid we might not survive.
8 Brothers and sisters, we don't want you to be ignorant about the suffering we experienced in the province of Asia. It was so extreme that it was beyond our ability to endure. We even wondered if we could go on living.
9 It certainly seemed to us as if we had gotten the death penalty. This was so that we would have confidence in God, who raises the dead, instead of ourselves.
9 In fact, we still feel as if we're under a death sentence. But we suffered so that we would stop trusting ourselves and learn to trust God, who brings the dead back to life.
10 God rescued us from a terrible death, and he will rescue us. We have set our hope on him that he will rescue us again,
10 He has rescued us from a terrible death, and he will rescue us in the future. We are confident that he will continue to rescue us,
11 since you are helping with your prayer for us. Then many people can thank God on our behalf for the gift that was given to us through the prayers of many people.
11 since you are also joining to help us when you pray for us. Then many people will thank God for the favor he will show us because many people prayed for us.
12 We have conducted ourselves with godly sincerity and pure motives in the world, and especially toward you. This is why we are confident, and our conscience confirms this. We didn't act with human wisdom but we relied on the grace of God.
12 We are proud that our conscience is clear. We are proud of the way that we have lived in this world. We have lived with a God-given holiness and sincerity, especially toward you. It was not by human wisdom that we have lived but by God's kindness.
13 We don't write anything to you except what you can read and also understand. I hope that you will understand totally
13 We are only writing you what you already knew before you read this. I hope you will understand this as long as you live,
14 since you have already understood us partly. Understand that in the day of our Lord Jesus, we will make you proud as you will also make us proud.
14 even though you now understand it only partially. We are your reason to be proud, as you will be our reason to be proud on the day of our Lord Jesus.
15 Because I was sure of this, I wanted to visit you first so that you could have a second opportunity to see me.
15 Confident of this, I had previously wanted to visit you so that you could benefit twice.
16 I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and then come to you again on my way back from Macedonia, at which point I was hoping you would help me on my way to Judea.
16 My plans had been to go from the city of Corinth to the province of Macedonia. Then from Macedonia I had planned to return to you again in Corinth and have you support my trip to Judea.
17 So I wasn't unreliable when I planned to do this, was I? Or do I make decisions with a substandard human process so that I say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" at the same time?
17 You don't think that I made these plans lightly, do you? Do you think that when I make plans, I make them in a sinful way? Why would I say that something is true when it isn't?
18 But as God is faithful, our message to you isn't both yes and no.
18 You can depend on God. Our message to you isn't false; it's true.
19 God's Son, Jesus Christ, is the one who was preached among you by us—through me, Silvanus, and Timothy—he wasn't yes and no. In him it is always yes.
19 God's Son, Jesus Christ, whom I, Silvanus, and Timothy told you about, was true not false. Because of him our message was always true.
20 All of God's promises have their yes in him. That is why we say Amen through him to the glory of God.
20 Certainly, Christ made God's many promises come true. For that reason, because of our message, people also honor God by saying, "Amen!"
21 God is the one who establishes us with you in Christ and who anointed us.
21 God establishes us, together with you, in a relationship with Christ. He has also anointed us.
22 God also sealed us and gave the Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.
22 In addition, he has put his seal [of ownership] on us and has given us the Spirit as his guarantee.
23 I call on God as my witness—I didn't come again to Corinth because I wanted to spare you.
23 I appeal to God as a witness on my behalf, that I stayed away from Corinth because I wanted to spare you.
24 It isn't that we are trying to control your faith, but we are working with you for your happiness, because you stand firm in your faith.
24 It isn't that we want to have control over your Christian faith. Rather, we want to work with you so that you will be happy. Certainly, you are firmly established in the Christian faith.
