King James Version KJV
The Complete Jewish Bible CJB
1 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
1
Now it is I myself, Sha'ul, making an appeal to you with the meekness and forbearance that come from the Messiah, I who am considered timid when face-to-face with you but intimidating from a distance.
2 But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
2
But I beg you not to force me to be intimidating when I am with you, as I expect to be toward some who regard us as living in a worldly way.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
3
For although we do live in the world, we do not wage war in a worldly way;
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
4
because the weapons we use to wage war are not worldly. On the contrary, they have God's power for demolishing strongholds. We demolish arguments
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
5
and every arrogance that raises itself up against the knowledge of God; we take every thought captive and make it obey the Messiah.
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.
6
And when you have become completely obedient, then we will be ready to punish every act of disobedience.
7 Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.
7
You are looking at the surface of things. If anyone is convinced that he belongs to the Messiah, he should remind himself that we belong to the Messiah as much as he does.
8 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord hath given us for edification, and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed:
8
For even if I boast a little too much about the authority the Lord has given us - authority to build you up, not tear you down - I am not ashamed.
9 That I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters.
9
My object is not to seem as if I were trying to frighten you with these letters.
10 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.
10
Someone says, "His letters are weighty and powerful, but when he appears in person he is weak, and as a speaker he is nothing."
11 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed when we are present.
11
Such a person should realize that what we say in our letters when absent, we will do when present.
12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
12
We don't dare class or compare ourselves with some of the people who advertise themselves. In measuring themselves against each other and comparing themselves with each other, they are simply stupid.
13 But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
13
We will not boast about what lies outside the area of work which God has given us; rather, we will boast within our assigned area, and that area does reach as far as you.
14 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
14
We are not overextending our boasting as if we had not reached as far as you; for we did come all the way to you with the Good News of the Messiah.
15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
15
We do not boast about the area in which others labor; but our hope is that as your trust grows, we will be magnified in your midst in relation to our own area of work, so that we can go on to do even more,
16 To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.
16
namely, to proclaim the Good News in regions beyond you. Our hope is not to boast about the work already done by someone else.
17 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
17
So, let anyone who wants to boast, boast about ADONAI;l
18 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
18
because it is not the one who recommends himself who is worthy of approval, but the one whom the Lord recommends.
