1 GIOSIA era d’età di ott’anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò trentun anno in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Iedida, figliuola di Adaia, da Boscat.

2 Ed egli fece quello che piace al Signore, e camminò in tutte le vie di Davide, suo padre; e non se ne stornò nè a destra, nè a sinistra.

3 Or l’anno diciottesimo del re Giosia, avvenne che il re mandò il segretario Safan, figliuolo di Asalia, figliuolo di Mesullam, nella Casa del Signore, dicendo:

4 Sali ad Hilchia, sommo sacerdote, e digli che raccolga la somma dei danari che son portati nella Casa del Signore, i quali, coloro che stanno alla guardia della soglia della Casa, hanno raccolti dal popolo;

5 e sieno dati in mano a coloro che hanno la cura dell’opera, e son costituiti sopra la Casa del Signore; ed essi li dieno a coloro che lavorano all’opera che si ha da far nella Casa del Signore, per ristorar le sue rotture,

6 a’ legnaiuoli, ed a’ fabbricatori, e a’ muratori; e ne comperino legnami e pietre tagliate, per ristorar la Casa.

7 Tuttavolta non si faceva loro render conto de’ danari che si davano loro nelle mani; perciocchè essi procedevano lealmente.

8 Ora il sommo sacerdote Hilchia disse al segretario Safan: Io ho trovato il libro della Legge nella Casa del Signore. Ed Hilchia diede il libro a Safan, il qual lo lesse.

9 E il segretario Safan venne al re, e gli rapportò la cosa, e disse: I tuoi servitori hanno raccolti i danari che si ritrovano nella Casa, e li hanno dati in mano a coloro che hanno la cura dell’opera, e son costituiti sopra la Casa del Signore.

10 Il segretario Safan rapportò eziandio al re, che il sacerdote Hilchia gli avea dato un libro. Ed egli lo lesse in presenza del re.

11 E quando il re ebbe udite le parole del libro della Legge, stracciò i suoi vestimenti.

12 Poi comandò al sacerdote Hilchia, e ad Ahicam, figliuolo di Safan, e ad Acbor, figliuolo di Micaia, ed al segretario Safan, e ad Asaia, servitor del re, dicendo:

13 Andate, domandate il Signore per me, e per lo popolo, e per tutto Giuda, intorno alle parole di questo libro ch’è stato trovato; perciocchè grande è l’ira del Signore, ch’è accesa contro a noi; perciocchè i nostri padri non hanno ubbidito alle parole di questo libro, per far tutto ciò che ci è prescritto.

14 E il sacerdote Hilchia, ed Ahicam, ed Acbor, e Safan, ed Asaia, andarono alla profetessa Hulda, moglie di Sallum, figliuolo di Ticva, figliuolo di Harhas, guardiano delle vesti, la quale abitava in Gerusalemme, nel secondo ricinto della città, e parlarono con lei.

15 Ed ella disse loro: Così ha detto il Signore Iddio d’Israele: Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati a me:

16 Così ha detto il Signore: Ecco io fo venir del male sopra questo luogo, e sopra i suoi abitatori: tutte le parole del libro che il re di Giuda ha lette.

17 Perciocchè essi mi hanno abbandonato, ed hanno fatto profumi ad altri dii, per provocarmi con tutte le opere delle lor mani; laonde la mia ira si è accesa contro a questo luogo, e non si spegnerà.

18 Ma dite così al re di Giuda, che vi ha mandati per domandare il Signore: Così ha detto il Signore Iddio di Israele: Quant’è alle parole che tu hai udite;

19 perciocchè il tuo cuore si è ammollito, e tu ti sei umiliato per timor del Signore, quando tu hai inteso ciò che io ho pronunziato contro a questo luogo, e contro a’ suoi abitatori, che sarebbero in desolazione ed in maledizione, ed hai stracciati i tuoi vestimenti, ed hai pianto nel mio cospetto; io altresì ti ho esaudito, dice il Signore.

20 Perciò, ecco, io ti ricoglierò co’ tuoi padri, e tu sarai raccolto nelle tue sepolture in pace; e gli occhi tuoi non vedranno tutto il male che io fo venire sopra questo luogo. Ed essi rapportarono la cosa al re.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled in Jerusalem for thirty-one years. His mother was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah from the town of Bozkath.

2 Josiah did what was pleasing to the Lord; he followed the example of his ancestor King David, strictly obeying all the laws of God.

3 In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the court secretary Shaphan, the son of Azaliah and grandson of Meshullam, to the Temple with the order:

4 "Go to the High Priest Hilkiah and get a report on the amount of money that the priests on duty at the entrance to the Temple have collected from the people.

5 Tell him to give the money to the men who are in charge of the repairs in the Temple. They are to pay

6 the carpenters, the builders, and the masons, and buy the timber and the stones used in the repairs.

7 The men in charge of the work are thoroughly honest, so there is no need to require them to account for the funds."

8 Shaphan delivered the king's order to Hilkiah, and Hilkiah told him that he had found the book of the Law in the Temple. Hilkiah gave him the book, and Shaphan read it.

9 Then he went back to the king and reported: "Your servants have taken the money that was in the Temple and have handed it over to the men in charge of the repairs."

10 And then he said, "I have here a book that Hilkiah gave me." And he read it aloud to the king.

11 When the king heard the book being read, he tore his clothes in dismay,

12 and gave the following order to Hilkiah the priest, to Ahikam son of Shaphan, to Achbor son of Micaiah, to Shaphan, the court secretary, and to Asaiah, the king's attendant:

13 "Go and consult the Lord for me and for all the people of Judah about the teachings of this book. The Lord is angry with us because our ancestors have not done what this book says must be done."

14 Hilkiah, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to consult a woman named Huldah, a prophet who lived in the newer part of Jerusalem. (Her husband Shallum, the son of Tikvah and grandson of Harhas, was in charge of the Temple robes.) They described to her what had happened,

15 and she told them to go back to the king and give him

16 the following message from the Lord: "I am going to punish Jerusalem and all its people, as written in the book that the king has read.

17 They have rejected me and have offered sacrifices to other gods, and so have stirred up my anger by all they have done. My anger is aroused against Jerusalem, and it will not die down.

18 As for the king himself, this is what I, the Lord God of Israel, say: You listened to what is written in the book,

19 and you repented and humbled yourself before me, tearing your clothes and weeping, when you heard how I threatened to punish Jerusalem and its people. I will make it a terrifying sight, a place whose name people will use as a curse. But I have heard your prayer,

20 and the punishment which I am going to bring on Jerusalem will not come until after your death. I will let you die in peace." The men returned to King Josiah with this message.
