1 Allora il re mandò a raunare appresso di sè tutti gli Anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

2 E il re salì nella Casa del Signore, con tutti gli uomini principali di Giuda, e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, ed i sacerdoti, ed i profeti, e tutto il popolo, dal minore al maggiore; ed egli lesse, in lor presenza, tutte le parole del libro del Patto, il quale era stato trovato nella Casa del Signore.

3 E il re stette in piè sopra la pila, e fece patto davanti al Signore, promettendo di camminare dietro al Signore, e di osservare i suoi comandamenti, e le sue testimonianze, ed i suoi statuti, con tutto il cuore, e con tutta l’anima, per mettere ad effetto le parole del Patto scritte in quel libro. E tutto il popolo se ne stette a quel Patto.

4 E il re comandò al sommo Sacerdote Hilchia, ed a’ sacerdoti del secondo ordine, ed a’ guardiani della soglia, che portassero fuor del Tempio del Signore tutti gli arredi ch’erano stati fatti per Baal, e per lo bosco, e per tutto l’esercito del cielo. Ed egli li bruciò fuor di Gerusalemme, nelle campagne di Chidron, e portò la polvere di essi in Betel

5 e sterminò i Camari, i quali i re di Giuda aveano ordinati, e i quali aveano fatti profumi negli alti luoghi, nelle città di Giuda, e ne’ contorni di Gerusalemme; sterminò eziandio quelli che facevano profumi a Baal, al sole, alla luna, ed ai pianeti, ed a tutto l’esercito del cielo.

6 Fece ancora portar via il bosco fuor della Casa del Signore, alla valle di Chidron, fuor di Gerusalemme, e l’arse in essa, e lo ridusse in polvere, la quale egli gittò sopra le sepolture de’ figliuoli del popolo.

7 Poi disfece le case de’ cinedi, che erano nella Casa del Signore, nelle quali le donne tessevano delle cortine per lo bosco.

8 Oltre a ciò, fece venir tutti i sacerdoti dalle città di Giuda, e contaminò gli alti luoghi, ne’ quali que’ sacerdoti aveano fatti profumi, da Gheba fino in Beerseba; e disfece gli alti luoghi delle porte, e quello ancora ch’era all’entrata della porta di Giosuè, capitano della città, ch’era a man sinistra della porta della città.

9 Or quei sacerdoti degli alti luoghi non salivano più all’Altare del Signore, in Gerusalemme; ma pur mangiavano de’ pani azzimi, per mezzo i lor fratelli.

10 Contaminò eziandio Tofet, ch’era nella valle de’ figliuoli di Hinnom; acciocchè niuno vi facesse più passare il suo figliuolo, o la sua figliuola, per lo fuoco, a Molec.

11 Tolse ancora via i cavalli, che i re di Giuda aveano rizzati al sole, dall’entrata della Casa del Signore, fino alla stanza di Netanmelec, eunuco, la quale era in Parvarim; e bruciò col fuoco i carri del sole.

12 Il re disfece ancora gli altari ch’erano sopra il tetto della sala di Achaz, i quali i re di Giuda aveano fatti; disfece parimente gli altari che Manasse avea fatti ne’ due Cortili della Casa del Signore, e toltili di là, li stritolò, e ne gittò la polvere nel torrente di Chidron.

13 Oltre a ciò, il re contaminò gli alti luoghi, ch’erano dirimpetto a Gerusalemme, da man destra del monte della corruzione, i quali Salomone re d’Israele avea edificati ad Astoret, abbominazione de’ Sidonii; ed a Chemos, abbominazione de’ Moabiti; ed a Milcom, abbominazione de’ figliuoli di Ammon;

14 e spezzò le statue, e tagliò i boschi, ed empiè d’ossa d’uomini i luoghi dove quegli erano

15 Disfece eziandio l’altare ch’era in Betel, e l’alto luogo ch’avea fatto Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, col quale egli avea fatto peccare Israele; egli disfece e l’altare, e l’alto luogo, e lo ridusse in polvere: ed arse il bosco.

16 Or Giosia, rivoltosi, vide le sepolture ch’erano quivi nel monte; e mandò a torre le ossa di quelle sepolture, e le arse sopra quell’altare, e lo contaminò; secondo la parola del Signore, la quale l’uomo di Dio avea predicata, quando egli annunziò queste cose.

17 E il re disse: Quale è quel monumento che io veggo? E la gente della città gli disse: È la sepoltura dell’uomo di Dio, che venne di Giuda, ed annunziò queste cose che tu hai fatte, contro all’altare di Betel.

18 Ed egli disse: Lasciatela stare, niuno muova le ossa di esso. Così furono conservate le ossa di esso, insieme con le ossa del profeta, ch’era venuto di Samaria.

19 Giosia tolse eziandio via tutte le case degli alti luoghi, ch’erano nelle città di Samaria, le quali i re d’Israele aveano fatte per dispettare il Signore; e fece loro interamente come avea fatto in Betel

20 E sacrificò sopra gli altari tutti i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi; ch’erano quivi; ed arse ossa d’uomini sopra quelli. Poi se ne ritornò in Gerusalemme.

21 Allora il re comandò a tutto il popolo, dicendo: Fate la Pasqua al Signore Iddio vostro, secondo ch’è scritto in questo libro del Patto

22 Perciocchè dal tempo de’ Giudici che aveano giudicato Israele, nè in tutto il tempo dei re d’Israele e di Giuda, non era stata celebrata tal Pasqua,

23 qual fu quella che fu celebrata al Signore in Gerusalemme, l’anno diciottesimo del re Giosia.

24 Giosia tolse eziandio via quelli che aveano lo spirito di Pitone, e gl’indovini, e le statue, e gl’idoli, e tutte le abbominazioni che si vedevano nel paese di Giuda, ed in Gerusalemme; per mettere ad effetto le parole della Legge, scritte nel libro che il sacerdote Hilchia avea trovato nella Casa del Signore.

25 E davanti a lui non vi era stato re alcuno pari a lui, che si fosse convertito al Signore con tutto il suo cuore, e con tutta l’anima sua, e con tutto il suo maggior potere, secondo tutta la Legge di Mosè; e dopo lui non n’è surto alcuno pari.

26 Ma pure il Signore non si stolse dall’ardore della sua grande ira; perciocchè l’ira sua era accesa contro a Giuda, per tutti i dispetti che Manasse gli avea fatti.

27 Laonde il Signore avea detto: Io torrò via dal mio cospetto anche Giuda, come ho tolto Israele; e rigetterò questa città di Gerusalemme che io avea eletta, e questa Casa della quale io avea detto: Il mio Nome sarà quivi.

28 Ora, quant’è al rimanente de’ fatti di Giosia, e tutto quello ch’egli fece; queste cose non sono esse scritte nel libro delle Croniche dei re di Giuda?

29 A’ suoi dì, Faraone Neco, re di Egitto, salì contro al re degli Assiri, verso il fiume Eufrate; e il re Giosia andò incontro a lui; e Faraone l’uccise in Meghiddo, come l’ebbe veduto.

30 Ed i suoi servitori lo misero morto sopra un carro, e lo condussero da Meghiddo in Gerusalemme, e lo seppellirono nel suo sepolcro. E il popolo del paese prese Gioachaz, figliuolo di Giosia, e l’unse, e lo costituì re, in luogo di suo padre.

31 GIOACHAZ era d’età di ventitre anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò tre mesi in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Hamutal, figliuola di Geremia da Libna.

32 Ed egli fece ciò che dispiace al Signore, interamente come aveano fatto i suoi padri.

33 E Faraone Neco l’incarcerò in Ribla, nel paese di Hamat, acciocchè non regnasse più in Gerusalemme; ed impose al paese un’ammenda di cento talenti d’argento, e d’un talento d’oro.

34 Poi Faraone Neco costituì re Eliachim, figliuolo di Giosia, in luogo di Giosia, suo padre; e gli mutò il nome in Gioiachim; e prese Gioachaz, e se ne venne in Egitto, dove Gioachaz morì.

35 Or Gioiachim diede quell’argento e quell’oro a Faraone; ma egli tassò il paese, per pagar que’ danari, secondo il comandamento di Faraone; egli trasse quell’argento, e quell’oro, da ciascuno del popolo del paese, secondo ch’egli era tassato, per darlo a Faraone Neco.

36 Gioiachim era d’età vi venticinque anni, quando cominciò a regnare; e regnò undici anni in Gerusalemme. E il nome di sua madre era Zebudda, figliuola di Pedaia, da Ruma

37 Ed egli fece ciò che dispiace al Signore, interamente come aveano fatto i suoi padri.

1 King Josiah summoned all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem,

2 and together they went to the Temple, accompanied by the priests and the prophets and all the rest of the people, rich and poor alike. Before them all the king read aloud the whole book of the covenant which had been found in the Temple.

3 He stood by the royal column and made a covenant with the Lord to obey him, to keep his laws and commands with all his heart and soul, and to put into practice the demands attached to the covenant, as written in the book. And all the people promised to keep the covenant.

4 Then Josiah ordered the High Priest Hilkiah, his assistant priests, and the guards on duty at the entrance to the Temple to bring out of the Temple all the objects used in the worship of Baal, of the goddess Asherah, and of the stars. The king burned all these objects outside the city near Kidron Valley and then had the ashes taken to Bethel.

5 He removed from office the priests that the kings of Judah had ordained to offer sacrifices on the pagan altars in the cities of Judah and in places near Jerusalem - all the priests who offered sacrifices to Baal, to the sun, the moon, the planets, and the stars.

6 He removed from the Temple the symbol of the goddess Asherah, took it out of the city to Kidron Valley, burned it, pounded its ashes to dust, and scattered it over the public burying ground.

7 He destroyed the living quarters in the Temple occupied by the temple prostitutes. (It was there that women wove robes used in the worship of Asherah.)

8 He brought to Jerusalem the priests who were in the cities of Judah, and throughout the whole country he desecrated the altars where they had offered sacrifices. He also tore down the altars dedicated to the goat demons near the gate built by Joshua, the city governor, which was to the left of the main gate as one enters the city.

9 Those priests were not allowed to serve in the Temple, but they could eat the unleavened bread provided for their fellow priests.

10 King Josiah also desecrated Topheth, the pagan place of worship in Hinnom Valley, so that no one could sacrifice his son or daughter as a burnt offering to the god Molech.

11 He also removed the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the worship of the sun, and he burned the chariots used in this worship. (These were kept in the temple courtyard, near the gate and not far from the living quarters of Nathan Melech, a high official.)

12 The altars which the kings of Judah had built on the palace roof above King Ahaz' quarters, King Josiah tore down, along with the altars put up by King Manasseh in the two courtyards of the Temple; he smashed the altars to bits and threw them into Kidron Valley.

13 Josiah desecrated the altars that King Solomon had built east of Jerusalem, south of the Mount of Olives, for the worship of disgusting idols - Astarte the goddess of Sidon, Chemosh the god of Moab, and Molech the god of Ammon.

14 King Josiah broke the stone pillars to pieces, cut down the symbols of the goddess Asherah, and the ground where they had stood he covered with human bones

15 Josiah also tore down the place of worship in Bethel, which had been built by King Jeroboam son of Nebat, who led Israel into sin. Josiah pulled down the altar, broke its stones into pieces, and pounded them to dust; he also burned the image of Asherah.

16 Then Josiah looked around and saw some tombs there on the hill; he had the bones taken out of them and burned on the altar. In this way he desecrated the altar, doing what the prophet had predicted long before during the festival as King Jeroboam was standing by the altar. King Josiah looked around and saw the tomb of the prophet who had made this prediction.

17 "Whose tomb is that?" he asked. The people of Bethel answered, "It is the tomb of the prophet who came from Judah and predicted these things that you have done to this altar."

18 "Leave it as it is," Josiah ordered. "His bones are not to be moved." So his bones were not moved, neither were those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.

19 In every city of Israel King Josiah tore down all the pagan places of worship which had been built by the kings of Israel, who thereby aroused the Lord's anger. He did to all those altars what he had done in Bethel

20 He killed all the pagan priests on the altars where they served, and he burned human bones on every altar. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

21 King Josiah ordered the people to celebrate the Passover in honor of the Lord their God, as written in the book of the covenant

22 No Passover like this one had ever been celebrated by any of the kings of Israel or of Judah, since the time when judges ruled the nation.

23 Now at last, in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah, the Passover was celebrated in Jerusalem.

24 In order to enforce the laws written in the book that the High Priest Hilkiah had found in the Temple, King Josiah removed from Jerusalem and the rest of Judah all the mediums and fortunetellers, and all the household gods, idols, and all other pagan objects of worship.

25 There had never been a king like him before, who served the Lord with all his heart, mind, and strength, obeying all the Law of Moses; nor has there been a king like him since.

26 But the Lord's fierce anger had been aroused against Judah by what King Manasseh had done, and even now it did not die down.

27 The Lord said, "I will do to Judah what I have done to Israel: I will banish the people of Judah from my sight, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and the Temple, the place I said was where I should be worshiped."

29 While Josiah was king, King Neco of Egypt led an army to the Euphrates River to help the emperor of Assyria. King Josiah tried to stop the Egyptian army at Megiddo and was killed in battle.

30 His officials placed his body in a chariot and took it back to Jerusalem, where he was buried in the royal tombs. The people of Judah chose Josiah's son Joahaz and anointed him king.

31 Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled in Jerusalem for three months. His mother was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah from the city of Libnah.

32 Following the example of his ancestors, he sinned against the Lord.

33 His reign ended when King Neco of Egypt took him prisoner in Riblah, in the land of Hamath, and made Judah pay 7,500 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold as tribute.

34 King Neco made Josiah's son Eliakim king of Judah as successor to Josiah, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. Joahaz was taken to Egypt by King Neco, and there he died.

35 King Jehoiakim collected a tax from the people in proportion to their wealth, in order to raise the amount needed to pay the tribute demanded by the king of Egypt.

36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king of Judah, and he ruled in Jerusalem for eleven years. His mother was Zebidah, the daughter of Pedaiah from the town of Rumah.

37 Following the example of his ancestors, Jehoiakim sinned against the Lord.
