1 Laonde l’anno nono del suo regno, nel decimo giorno del decimo mese, Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, venne contro a Gerusalemme, con tutto il suo esercito, e pose campo contro ad essa; e fabbricarono delle bastie contro ad essa d’ogn’intorno.

2 E la città fu assediata fino all’anno undecimo del re Sedechia.

3 Il nono giorno del quarto mese, essendo la fame grande nella città, talchè non vi era pane per lo popolo del paese;

4 ed essendo stata la città sforzata, tutta la gente di guerra se ne fuggì di notte, per la via della porta fra le due mura, che riguardava verso l’orto del re, essendo i Caldei sopra la città d’ogn’intorno; e il re se ne andò traendo verso il deserto.

5 E l’esercito de’ Caldei lo perseguitò, e l’aggiunse nelle campagne di Gerico; e tutto il suo esercito si disperse d’appresso a lui.

6 E i Caldei presero il re: e lo menarono al re di Babilonia, in Ribla; e quivi fu sentenziato.

7 E i suoi figliuoli furono scannati in sua presenza; e il re di Babilonia fece abbacinar gli occhi a Sedechia, e lo fece legare di due catene di rame, e fu menato in Babilonia.

8 Poi, al settimo giorno del quinto mese dell’anno decimonono di Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, Nebuzaradan, capitan della guardia, servitore del re di Babilonia, entrò in Gerusalemme.

9 Ed arse la Casa del Signore, e la casa del re, e tutte le altre case di Gerusalemme; in somma, egli arse col fuoco tutte le case grandi.

10 E tutto l’esercito de’ Caldei, ch’era col capitano della guardia, disfece le mura di Gerusalemme d’ogn’intorno.

11 Nebuzaradan, capitano della guardia, menò in cattività il rimanente del popolo ch’era restato nella città, insieme con quelli ch’erano andati ad arrendersi al re di Babilonia, e il rimanente del popolazzo.

12 Ma pure il capitano della guardia lasciò alcuni de’ più miseri del paese, per vignaiuoli e lavoratori.

13 E i Caldei misero in pezzi le colonne di rame, ch’erano nella Casa del Signore, e i basamenti, e il mar di rame, ch’era nella Casa del Signore, e ne portarono il rame in Babilonia.

14 Portarono eziandio via le caldaie, e le palette, e le forcelle, e le cazzuole, e tutti gli strumenti di rame, co’ quali si faceva il servigio.

15 Il capitano della guardia portò eziandio via i turiboli, i bacini; quel ch’era d’oro a parte, e quel ch’era d’argento a parte.

16 Quant’è alle due colonne, al mare, ed a’ basamenti, le quali cose Salomone avea fatte per la Casa del Signore, il peso del rame di tutti que’ lavori era senza fine.

17 Una colonna era alta diciotto cubiti, e sopra essa vi era un capitello di rame, alto tre cubiti; e sopra il capitello d’ogn’intorno vi era una rete, e delle melegrane; tutto era di rame; le medesime cose erano ancora nell’altra colonna, insieme con la sua rete.

18 Il capitano della guardia prese ancora Seraia, primo sacerdote, e Sofonia, secondo sacerdote, e i tre guardiani della soglia.

19 Prese eziandio, e menò via dalla città un eunuco, ch’era commissario della gente di guerra, e cinque uomini de’ famigliari del re, che furono ritrovati nella città, e il principale scrivano di guerra, che faceva le rassegne degli eserciti del popolo del paese, e sessant’uomini principali del popolo del paese, che furono ritrovati nella città.

20 Nebuzaradan adunque, capitano della guardia, li prese, e li condusse al re di Babilonia, in Ribla.

21 E il re di Babilonia li percosse, e li fece morire, in Ribla, nel paese di Hamat. Così Giuda fu menato via dal suo paese in cattività.

22 E quant’è al popolo che restò nel paese di Giuda, il quale Nebucadnesar, re di Babilonia, vi lasciò, egli costituì sopra loro Ghedalia, figliuolo di Ahicam, figliuolo di Safan.

23 E quando tutti i capitani della gente di guerra: Ismaele, figliuolo di Netania, e Iohanan, figliuolo di Carea, e Seraia, figliuolo di Tanhumet Netofatita, e Iaazania, figliuolo d’un Maacatita, e la lor gente, ebbero inteso che il re di Babilonia avea costituito governatore Ghedalia, vennero a lui in Mispa, con la lor gente.

24 E Ghedalia giurò a loro, e alla lor gente, e disse loro: Non temiate d’esser soggetti a’ Caldei; dimorate nel paese, e servite al re di Babilonia, e starete bene.

25 Ma avvenne che al settimo mese, Ismaele, figliuolo di Netania, figliuolo di Elisama, del sangue reale, venne, avendo dieci uomini seco, e percossero Ghedalia, ed egli morì. Percossero eziandio i Giudei, ed i Caldei, ch’erano con lui in Mispa.

26 E tutto il popolo, dal minore al maggiore, e i capitani della gente di guerra, si levarono, e se ne vennero in Egitto; perciocchè temevano de’ Caldei.

27 Or l’anno trentasettesimo della cattività di Gioiachin, re di Giuda, nel ventisettesimo giorno del duodecimo mese, Evilmerodac, re di Babilonia, l’anno stesso ch’egli cominciò a regnare, facendo la rassegna della sua casa, vi mise Gioiachin, re di Giuda, e lo trasse di prigione;

28 e parlò con lui benignamente, ed innalzò il seggio di esso sopra il seggio degli altri re, ch’erano con lui in Babilonia.

29 Ed egli mutò il suoi vestimenti di prigione, ed egli mangiò del continuo in presenza del re, tutto il tempo della vita sua.

30 E del continuo gli era dato, giorno per giorno, il suo piatto da parte del re, tutto il tempo della vita sua.

1 Zedekiah rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, and so Nebuchadnezzar came with all his army and attacked Jerusalem on the tenth day of the tenth month of the ninth year of Zedekiah's reign. They set up camp outside the city, built siege walls around it,

2 and kept it under siege until Zedekiah's eleventh year.

3 On the ninth day of the fourth month of that same year, when the famine was so bad that the people had nothing left to eat,

4 the city walls were broken through. Although the Babylonians were surrounding the city, all the soldiers escaped during the night. They left by way of the royal garden, went through the gateway connecting the two walls, and fled in the direction of the Jordan Valley.

5 But the Babylonian army pursued King Zedekiah, captured him in the plains near Jericho, and all his soldiers deserted him.

6 Zedekiah was taken to King Nebuchadnezzar, who was in the city of Riblah, and there Nebuchadnezzar passed sentence on him.

7 While Zedekiah was looking on, his sons were put to death; then Nebuchadnezzar had Zedekiah's eyes put out, placed him in chains, and took him to Babylon.

8 On the seventh day of the fifth month of the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia, Nebuzaradan, adviser to the king and commander of his army, entered Jerusalem.

9 He burned down the Temple, the palace, and the houses of all the important people in Jerusalem,

10 and his soldiers tore down the city walls.

11 Then Nebuzaradan took away to Babylonia the people who were left in the city, the remaining skilled workers, and those who had deserted to the Babylonians.

12 But he left in Judah some of the poorest people, who owned no property, and put them to work in the vineyards and fields.

13 The Babylonians broke in pieces the bronze columns and the carts that were in the Temple, together with the large bronze tank, and they took all the bronze to Babylon.

14 They also took away the shovels and the ash containers used in cleaning the altar, the tools used in tending the lamps, the bowls used for catching the blood from the sacrifices, the bowls used for burning incense, and all the other bronze articles used in the Temple service.

15 They took away everything that was made of gold or silver, including the small bowls and the pans used for carrying live coals.

16 The bronze objects that King Solomon had made for the Temple - the two columns, the carts, and the large tank - were too heavy to weigh.

17 The two columns were identical: each one was 27 feet high, with a bronze capital on top, 4 1/2 feet high. All around each capital was a bronze grillwork decorated with pomegranates made of bronze.

18 In addition, Nebuzaradan, the commanding officer, took away as prisoners Seraiah the High Priest, Zephaniah the priest next in rank, and the three other important Temple officials.

19 From the city he took the officer who had been in command of the troops, five of the king's personal advisers who were still in the city, the commander's assistant, who was in charge of military records, and sixty other important men.

20 Nebuzaradan took them to the king of Babylonia, who was in the city of Riblah

21 in the territory of Hamath. There the king had them beaten and put to death. So the people of Judah were carried away from their land into exile.

22 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylonia made Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, governor of Judah, and placed him in charge of all those who had not been taken away to Babylonia.

23 When the Judean officers and soldiers who had not surrendered heard about this, they joined Gedaliah at Mizpah. These officers were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth from the town of Netophah, and Jezaniah from Maacah.

24 Gedaliah said to them, "I give you my word that there is no need for you to be afraid of the Babylonian officials. Settle in this land, serve the king of Babylonia, and all will go well with you."

25 But in the seventh month of that year, Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah and grandson of Elishama, a member of the royal family, went to Mizpah with ten men, attacked Gedaliah, and killed him. He also killed the Israelites and Babylonians who were there with him.

26 Then all the Israelites, rich and poor alike, together with the army officers, left and went to Egypt, because they were afraid of the Babylonians.

27 In the year that Evilmerodach became king of Babylonia, he showed kindness to King Jehoiachin of Judah by releasing him from prison. This happened on the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month of the thirty-seventh year after Jehoiachin had been taken away as prisoner.

28 Evilmerodach treated him kindly and gave him a position of greater honor than he gave the other kings who were exiles with him in Babylonia.

29 So Jehoiachin was permitted to change from his prison clothes and to dine at the king's table for the rest of his life.

30 Each day, for as long as he lived, he was given a regular allowance for his needs.
